The bombs that were dropped saved lives, they avoided the wholesale invasion of mainland Japan which, by conservative estimates would have resulted in atleast 1.5million US casualties and upwards of 10 million Japanese, BUT is that better for humanity as a whole? We're going to be dealing with the fact any crackpot with enough funding has a good chance at getting one of these now days and into the future.
@9inchsradius they could have dropped the bomb just off the sea of japan to demenstrate its power, but general groves want it tested on human beings and that is what is wrong.
@exet That wouldn't have done anything; remember it took 2 detonations on the public to force Japan into surrender. They could have surrendered after the first bomb. If blowing up some shoreline or putting on a really impressive light show was going to do anything they wouldn't have been in the situation they were.
time i am, the great destroyer of the worlds, and i have come here to destroy all people, with the exception of you. and all soldiers on both sides will be slain
screw you, he was a brilliant physicist. someone else would have made the atomic bomb, or something that contains radioactive weaponery. wheather if he's a christian, a muslim or anything else.
The need for a Clean Air Act can be explained by looking at those smoke stacks. Having been to smoke school I can tell you the particulates they are spewing unfiltered are still with us in the great recycle; today.
@f328owner no no, of course they were not member of the party :) The ones the fled were the Jewish scientists or other scientists, hunted by the party.
I always wonder what Europe would be like if Hitler had properly predicted the implications of the Atomic Bomb; kept the most brilliant scientists, amassed an arsenal, and [predictably as per his nature] unleashed hell in the Eastern part of his globe in his quest for Aryan dominance.
In the past I might have flamed you for comments like this. . . but after living in Japan for over 5 years I can understand why USA dropped the A-bomb on them - it was necessary.
Even to this day underneath their guise of politeness, Japanese are quite racist and consider non-Japanese to be lesser people. This is not true of all Japanese (there are some exceptions) but for the most part that is how it is. There is a reason why Chinese and Koreans have an issue with them.
Yeah, it was necessary, but you're pretty fucking stupid. They attacked a military base and killed predominately soldiers, Their enemy. We attacked a civilian area. Kid of a dick move on our part, but hey, Don't Fuck with America.
The Bible prophecies and the signs of apocalypse are all coming true. The end of times is near. Repent for your sins and swear obediance and loyalty to God before It's too late. If you do that, you'll be saved. If you don't, you'll be cast in the fires of hell and you'll be stuck there for all eternity. I am one of God's Watchmen and you have been warned...
FUCK!!!! Anyone on youtube patriotic anymore??? We ended the war. Period. As a former History Major, I studied WW2 to the point where my friend and I outsmarted the Prof. Conspiracy Theorists do some real research for once, and Thank God (if you believe in anything other than your obsession in hating America) that you don't speak Russian, German OR Japanese... Don't FUCK w/ the EAGLE!
Thanks for posting, I always thought this was one of the better documentaries on the Manhattan project. It's funny seeing General Grove, he was played by Paul Newman in a movie that explored the tension between the General and the scientists at Los Alamos. While Newman is much better looking, he had the General's personality down pat according to people who had been there.
@electonicsforless He should have said over 2000 sailors and soldiers. Or technically added airmen and civlians as well. But that would be nitpicking, which if you watch the Discovery and History channels a lot (which obviously we do! ) is a full time occupation.
@electonicsforless The casualties at Pear Harbor weren't just Navy personnel. Japanese planes strafed and bombed a variety of targets, including civilian cars in a few instances. Hey, it was war.
Great Video, but would have been so much more helpful if it had captions or subtitles for Deaf and Hard of Hearing viewers. YouTube offers uploaders the ability to add captions as of the past couple years, perhaps this could be added?
it's hard to beleive but that little factory on one of the testing facilities is just foundation concrete on this big hill. i was there today in oak ridge check my airsoft video.

The devastation convinced Hitler that the weapon was far to inhumane to ever use on people so it was shelved. I think there are two possibilities.
Everyone would've been overcome with terror and surrendered (incredibly unlikely).
OR vast amounts of resources would've been dumped into the Manhattan project, America would've developed as many bombs as possible and saturation bomb Germany with Nukes.
Then Nuclear Winter and the apocalypse.
