I kinda of like Jorge Garcia playing the Sawyer-type, I can see him being a frustrating type of stubborn guy. And you can definitely play up the fat thing as being part of the reason why he's so jaded and hotheaded towards life. I mean, I think if they had cast him as Sawyer, they would have probably changed around the stories and love triangles, and it wouldn't be the LOST that we know now. Just like they had planned to kill off Jack in the first episode.
