@SpeakerPolice The train in the video It and N&W 611 and possibly C&O 614... And its actually NS 4610 not Southern 4610 4610 was a steam engine on the Southern RR. 4610 is NS's unit and goes on tour to museums. They painted it in the ceremonial Southern paint. Take on a Heritage Unit
I gotcha. Though, from a technical standpoint, it does have the 'SOU' sublettering. It's always been a NS engine, but it has been lettered for the Southern. xD
EMD came out with an engine type before the GP60 called the GP59, it had a 12 cylinder 710G3A, The GP60 had a 26 cylinder 710G3A. One of the handful of locomotives still in southern paint, it has ran road freights.
The GP60 had a 16 cylinder engine. If it somehow had a 26 cylinder engine which I don't think EMD ever made, it'd be a lot longer than it actually is since the engine would extend so far back.
Also the 4610 along with the other GP59s were built after the Sou and NW merger and were delivered in NS paint.
It was only back in 1994 that 4610 was repainted in Southern paint for the marking of 100 years when Southern Railway was first founded. NS Engineer Ben Lee suggested the repaint.
I figured you probably made a typing mistake, anyway I didn't mean to make you look stupid or anything like that.
Engines with so many cylinders like that do exist though, but they are used as the generators to make electricity in some medium sized power plants and as prime movers for massive ships.
Union Pacific's eight axle centenial DD40X that was built with two EMD 16 cylinder engines probably would be the only diesel locomotive to handle a engine that big.
It's sad that the horsepower race has ended, the DD40Xs are pretty much gone, most of the SD90MAC Hs are gone, the AC6000's future is looking kinda sorry. I do much love the 710 and 645, they are my two favorite EMD engines and and along with the GE FDL, I am in the progress of making some MSTS sounds using the 710 and 645 true rev at 44100hz
I is sad. I often wonder if the DDA40X will ever be bested. And that sounds like a cool project; any chance of some sound demos here on YouTube later? =)
@CatskillMountainRail Its a GP59. When they first painted it, I wondered the same thing but I guess since Southern owned no low-nose engines someone thought it would be nice to see one in the green paint scheme. What was ironic at the time was the fact NS had just retired or repainted the few remaining locos in Southern paint.
This must have been after I took her out and up to the fence line that borders out property. I got to drive this baby! sweat runner. C abcontols flopped so the low nose is the back end. Swar something dead was in that hopper! (Stank to high heavens)
I've operated 1026, nice unit to ride, but shes a little tuchy on the controls. persinaly 8202, or Hartwell 2 where the most user frendly locomotives we have.
Most of the ex-Southern locomotives have been in the tuxedo colors, although the ones in 1950s and 60s were known green and white with gold.

thats a GP60 and HOW IS THAT SOUTHERN!?!?!? or even historical?!?!
CatskillMountainRail 2 years ago
NS #'s 4606-4641 (including 4610) are GP59s! Norfolk Southern's GP60s are numbered 7100-7150.
harrodsburgNSfan 2 years ago
harrodsburgNSfan is correct, 4610 is a GP49, and is in historical Southern Railway paint, as is the EMD E8 on site. =)

I mean GP59! Curse my typing skills XD

Try a 16 cylinder on the GP60.

I think it was a typo. XD 26 cylinders, now that would be something! XD

It is a GP59 which is a 12-cylinder variant of the GP60. They both came out at the same time.

Yeah, a heritage scheme. I've actually known for years now that she's a 59, hence the title. I cannot edit my voice in the video, however. xD
