The advice penny gives sucks. If your ugly , you've gotta try hard, otherwise nothing happens (as a guy). If you try hard you get blown the fuck out alot and then you start to get used to it and become indifferent and suddenly the girls do start liking you (well some). If you do nothing, no girl will start liking you. none will start talking to your ugly shy ass and they sure as hell won't make a move, even if they were to start a conversation. you'll have to lead. just FYI! :)

So presumably her advice was more to stop desperately chasing after girls with his heart on his sleeve, and more to concentrate on being the best person he could be (cultivating his particular talents and accumulating self-confidence thereby) and the right girl for him would recognize those good aspects.

You can take action and still come from a non needy place. you talk to or try tokiss or whatever you do to a girl not because you need her, but because you want her. IMO it's better to take massive action and learn the hard way that you shouldn't be needy, than it is to wait and hope that some "right girl" will notice you and save you from lonelliness.
