  • Here it is, Christmas Day, and I am spending time with my grandpop.

I did a search today to see, in fact, if there were any recordings of the orchestra with him in it - Walla! Here he is. He will be 98 next month.

So to all the harsh critics of the orchestra in the threads - I KNOW none of you will be able to be as alive as he is when you are his age - Kudos to the conductor for not being an elitist and allowing "lesser" musicians perform along side a great talent. Snobs, every one here.

  • "There is no connection with the conductor and the soloist. I am assuming because of the placement which was a bad choice."

Agreed. Now, I'm only saying this out of amusement, not because I bear the conductor or soloist any ill will - but it almost looked like the conductor was surprised at the beginning that there was a soloist there. :-)

  • This is a VERY beautiful piece!

The way you play it is so...empowering; it sucks me in. I'm working on this solo with my private teacher and using this video as a guide :) You're not only talented, but beautiful.

  • Yeah! get a new orchestra! soloist is fine...

  • Get a new orchestra... or a new conductor, but I liked you! :D

  • congratulation Lady!!!!!!

  • although i don't understand the whole step thing i do believe that the girl is very talented.. :)

  • i actually laughed a little bit at the orchestra.

  • There is no connection with the conductor and the soloist. I am assuming because of the placement which was a bad choice.

I love this concerto. Bax Bruch is an excellent composer. He has a very distinctive style.

The soloist could have been more aggressive and put more weight on the notes. I dont mean that by put more wait on the string with the bow. I mean that with the timber, the quality of sound. But still a great performance.

  • Intonation issues... Vibrato is slow... Not enough aggression... Orchestra is horrible!!! Other than that, good job. lol!

  • Caeli is under-rated for sure. What a pleasure to watch. she is determined to be better and better. She has the best accompanists to boot. Blessings to you madam Smith. The late Dorothy DeLay would have been proud of you. We love you for your

master musicianship and your tech inputs as well. Keep them coming.

  • this is good, but the orchestra is so out of tune!=( and this concerto is supposed to have much more expression, fiery!

  • Good job!!!!

  • I'm sure with a better orchestra she could've pulled and pushed tempos wherever she pleased, but she's doing VERY WELL to have to play with such an orchestra. :P

  • Fantastic performance :) i learning this movement at the moment any tips ?

  • WHat is this orchestra?

And, are you famous? lol...i have just heard of you on YT before:)

  • wow this is AMAZING

  • wow this is amazing

  • the accelerando section needs some work, mainly the orchestra.

  • Sorry I meant 5:10.

  • I am about to perform this piece. Those chromatic scales are tough! It seems here as though the orchestra is holding you back a little bit. It seems as though they also could have used more rehearsal time. Your playing was as usual, very nice. I do feel that you could have loosened up with the temp a bit. Beautiful job with the slow section, and interesting bowing at 8:10.

  • I love how strongly you play the song. You have such a conviction about you. (: Also, beautiful dress!

  • THAT IS AWESOMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

  • intonation please

  • how old is she?

  • I'd be scared to stand right on a step... But very well played!

And I am not a fan of the orchestra...

  • I don't know how to play violin and I was recently given one by my uncle for Christmas. I found a video on a program and wasn't sure if it was worth the money of not? Claims that you can Learn to play violin in 30 days, Master the Violin, quickly and Now. Look forward to some feedback.w w w (dot) getgoodreviews (dot) com/go/violin_lessons (dot) php

  • You need talent , not evrey one have'it.

Only the desir to play is not enought,

because the violine is a very difficult instrument..........

5* for the virtuose Caeli Smith

  • @abbott080 Don't trust it.

  • Intonation could be worked on, as well as the musical interpretation/gesture of this piece, but good work, I can tell you worked hard (:

  • I think the soloist was much better than the orchestra.

  • @Revolutionista27

    i think the same

  • Sheet music readers should really play by ear. When you play by ear, that determines if you truly have music talent.

  • not true. just because you read the music off a piece of paper doesn't mean you don't have a gift. true, that people with perfect pitch and memorization are very good at their skill and should be credited with that, but musicians are still great even without their perfect pitch.

  • Well then what's your definition of musical talent?

  • lmao I laughed at the conductor :P. She is an outstanding violinist. The orchestra...not so much...

  • pfffffffff she plays very well but the orchestra is horrible!!! :S

please next time they can essay a bit more, no? xD

  • I agree - I don't think the orchestra sounds particularly great. Maybe it is the recording; but then why would the soloist sound so good?

  • she is a good violin player, but I don't like the orchestra =/

  • Caeli is great, but how can the orchestra not laugh at the conductor? I've never seen anything like it in my life....

  • If you saw the conductor who conducted my high school orchestra, you'd take that back lol

  • you are really good! everyone needs to chill about the orchestra; it's harder than it looks for everyone involved.

  • I gotta agree, the orchestra was mediocre at best. Great work on the solo though, it sounded rad. Maybe that's what makes everyone aware that the orchestra sound so crudtastic?

  • the soloist is decent, but the rest of the orchestra obviously needs to learn this piece better

  • great soloist, needs a better orchestra.

  • I wonder what edition she was playing from.. because everytime she did an accel, I have a ritard written in my part O.o?

  • are u talking about the cadenza, cuz if u are, the rit or accel is personal preference. i have a rit in my edition but i prefer the accel.

  • How long did it take to learn the first movement?

  • My high school orchestra is better than that one >.>

    They're so bad, my jesus

  • My high school too...

  • Not bad playing, but that tempo drove me crazy. Just too slow for me I guess.

  • Soloist fantastic, deserved a better orchestra!

  • holy shit

  • Shouldn't the soloist and the conductor be able to see eachother?

  • You should be commended for not breaking out in laughter from 5:50 onward.... : )

  • Nice Dress

  • Congratulations girl.

About the orchestra, the 6th minute was very well tuned! LOL

  • lol indeed

  • lol i can imagine how much practice went into this

  • hey i think i saw you perform on PBS for From the Top at Carnegie Hall! am i right?

  • Comment removed

  • I think I'll bookmark 6:14-6:18 whenever I need cheering up....lol

  • Now I want to avoid the word "retarded" but it just seems like a bad idea to perform on those steps - but hey, it's just me....

  • It wasn't my idea, I was asked to stand on the steps. thanks for your tactful comment

  • You are a great musician, girl..!!!! Congrats...

  • @alicelizard :)---yeah, sometimes you just have to bare with what you are given and let it have no effect on your performance!! BRAVO!

  • @alicelizard uhhh...yeah...you just gotta' coup, and do yur best!

    but umm..the orchestra sounds terrible!

  • For the type of orchestra this is..they did ok. The soloist was a bit stiff in her playing though...and a few flat notes..but hey, it's a challenging piece and she's got plenty of good elements in her playing. Nice job.

  • That looks like an uncomfortable spot to stand. Great performance nonetheless!

  • 5:50 - 6:00

    HAHAAHA ORCHESTRAA

  • LOL evil...

  • OH MY FRIGGEN GOODNESS....that was painful!!!!

  • Max Bruch rotating

  • I think the soloist played very well. A little more.. emotion might've made it even better.

I feel bad since.. on the contrary, the orchestra.. really sucked, no offense.. :P

  • Caeli, congratulations on a wonderful performance! You played beautifully and you look great in your dress!

  • im playing this song now and 'm horrible!!!!!!I love the opning cadenzas!! the soloist is reaaly good!!!

  • This was my graduating concert, and the orchestra is really bad, but shes ok though...

  • Not all orchestras are top notch..there are community crchestras; orchestras wherein there are players of every level and HAPPILY SO..every player with the desire should have the opportunity to perform. Playing music is not just for the divinely gifted.

  • amen

  • But, orchestra music is NOT hard. If you put effort into practicing, and if the conductor is good at working with the orchestra to change dynamics and stuff, an orchestra can be good. There are no bad players, only lazy ones...

It's just like working out... it only takes 10 or 15 minutes a day. People just like to say they don't have time as an excuse.

"Divinely Gifted" only gets you so far, it's HARD WORK.

  • do you understand what a community orchestra is? do you have any comprehension? People who have other occupations and they are doing this as a HOBBY in their spare time. Their occupation is what they aspire to do--they don't aspire to be great musicians, this is thier relaxation, like golf. They are not necessarily great talent but it brings them pleasure. They enjoy getting together and playing-they KNOW they are not wonderful, so don't go see your community orchestra if it bothers you

  • i totally agree. their main focus isn't on music, it's on another job. it's like say you were a doctor, and you liked to knit. your whole life wouldn't be knitting and neither would your job, it's just for fun and to soothe stress.

  • the orchestra isn't very good... /: i've heard a way better recording. but the soloist is great! i'm playing this song right now.

  • damn......she is an excellent soloist....love your style....just like a single note dancing around the scale

  • The orchestra is rubish...:O

  • wonderful concerto. i love it. the way she plays it is enticing!

  • It seems kinda dangerous to play on the steps, doesn't it?

  • you know what?

i found out why the orchestra was that bad...

the conductor was making everyone laugh

  • he was actually doing poppin dance

  • Is that orchestra a joke?

  • man i totally agree what is wrong with the flutes and french horn.........wait no... what is wrong with the whole orchestra.....

  • yh its quite a bad collab...and the tuning is awful...yuk

  • Well, this is not the Philadelphia Orchestra but our soloist is so sweet to endure the accompaniment. Bravo!!!

  • wonderful solo! i'm learning this right now and i luv playing it! but, umm...wut happened w/ the orchestra?

  • Not bad... little flat at times.. :p

  • oh god! kick dem off the stage! jesus christ!!!!!

  • what a shit orchestra!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • You played fabulously. The orchestra on the other hand...ha...not so fabulous...

  • oh god, especially at 5:20, 5:50, 6:15, 7:50

id be embarassed to play w this orchestra

  • that conducter and orchestra is terrible, but solo was good

  • what is the conductor doing?!

and the orchestra is horrible. but woww you played that really really well :)

  • i played this! but you're so much better :)

  • wtf this orchestra is just hilarious. is this a video spoop?

  • Wow. Good job, but that orchestra is making my ears bleed.............

  • great job on the Bruch. Man, the orchestra sounds like ass at 6:15 but most importantly you sounded great. Hopefully you stick with it.

-25 year Chemistry PhD student from 8-6 and violist (since 14 years old) in whatever hours are left in the day.

  • lol that guy in the corner (back row, audience seat, 1st violin section) keeps his violin up at the ready the whole time

the soloist is an exceptional player

  • Are you kidding people kidding me? This girl played this in the 8th grade. This is some AMAZING stuff. minus the orchestra.

  • (soloist... you rulle! very good)

  • this orchestra is terrible....but alice, you're really good.

  • I know!! right?!!

  • im sorry but the orchestra was HORRIBLY OUT OF TUNE.. but the soloist was very good

  • you're totally right... specially from minute 6... oh my god, poor soloist...

  • Stop putting rude websites please. Put it on a suitable topic in Youtube.

  • I like it but I think that you could play with just a little more feeling. Technically, it's good. But isn't music about having fun?

  • ...thanx. Where did the name 'alicelizard' come from? Caeli has such a great stage presence and I'm sure will go long way!

  • "Alice" is an anagram for her name and the lizard has something to do with an iguana we had years ago-- it's an old moniker, from when she was a little kid.

  • Having played in this orchestra at one time, yes the intonation needs work and the players need to watch the conductor. Remember these are mostly amatuers who love playing music. They are devoted even if they don't sound professional. Caeli is great and will only improve with years!

  • Not bad, Coeli! You have a very powerful sound and a good talent. The orchestra is a shame!

  • double stops need work, but other than that it's good. orchestra, as stated billiaosdjfaoifdtimes is yuckyyyy

  • yeah dude, the orchestra is weak. soloist -- nice interpretation -- I agree with people above, you need to work with a more skilled orchestra.

  • orchestra is terrible. kudos to the violinist; I'm working on this piece myself, this isn't an easy concerto.

  • Do you have any more Bruch? Romance for Viola & Orchestra or Kolnidrei would be good :-D But thanks for uploading these.

  • ehh i dont mean it to be mean, take it from someone whos playing this piece to death, its not twinkle twinkle little star, for a girl as young as her, shes definitely should feel accomplished. if you have a problem with other peoples comments then dont read them? kthx

  • If you watch it without sound, it certainly does not look like a Max Bruch Concerto. It's Romance, not boredom. However technically, you play beautifully. Work on phrasing a little bit, and you would be amazing. Play with some passion, and just let it go. You will feel more satisfied with the way you perform if you do. You're very good though.

  • Isn't it scary standing on a stair like that? If I play on a step I'd fall off since I tend to move around a lot when I play.

  • nice job. thanks for posting it. i love this music.

  • our orchestra is playing this right now

  • wow i luv that!

You r a very great violonist and you r very good!

I have 2 play the first violin of this in ochestra, and i hope that our solo player is as good as u!

The ochestra of this video sucks... it seems as if they see that for the first time! :-)

  • you're a fantastic soloist and you played this with a community orchestra...you could've done a whole lot better without them, not that you did bad with them...

You need to play with a much more skilled orchestra and then you will shine brighter than you ever have.

  • I love the bow arm! And the recording is very passionate, the double-stops are in tune...There's too much definition in places and not enough in others; that's just my opinion though. All around, I think it's a very satisfying performance, though I'm sure the soloist, if she's anything like me, found a billion things that were wrong with it. xD

  • out of tune, very trite, very boring

  • I thought the soloist was brilliant.

  • leave my videos alone, since you hate them so much

  • alicelizaed.....something tells me you're Caeli's

Mom. I play in the BCSO, and the OYRO orchestras and enjoyed very much playing for Caeli. I enjoy your vids, ignore the uneducated comments. Look me up sometime at one of her performances, I may be there. I was in her magnificent performance of Saint-Seans 3rd in April with the OYR under Gabe.

  • Actually, Alicelizard is Caeli and I'm her mom, but I do read the comments. We thought your orchestra did a great job this April. This other community orchestra (in this video) was a wonderful group of people and she really enjoyed playing with them.

  • BITE ME

  • VIOLINS SUCK

  • Shoplifters, however, are extraordinary people. Good luck with that.

  • was there... any point to what you've said? like, at all?

if you ask me, people that have just enough brain cells to keep their pulse going while making ridiculous comments on youtube are the ones that suck.

but you know, that's just my opinion.

  • orchestra is really bad.Max Bruch violin concerto is very brillant concerto but when they play it it's bad.The violinist is playing normal. But because of orchestra. If orchestra was good she was might play well. She can play better if she play with different orchestra:)

  • Wow! You are really really good, but the orchestra drags a lot.

  • This is very slow. Orchestra really bad! What orchestra is that?

  • you are beautiful

    the orchestra is not

  • i must say: you were stumbled by the poor orchestra and the location you were playing. it's different from your performance as usual.

  • you could be much better if you were not playing on the narrow stairstep, though you were great enough! i guess you keep worrying your feet on.

  • this is incredible!!! loll i'm playing this piece right, seriously i'm no where near your level. phenomenal and impeccable

  • You're Orchestra sounds like my old middle school orchestra....You are phenomanal, but next time play with an orchestra that has better intonation, rhythm and syncopation! This is a hard peice, nice job!

  • i'm playing this song for uil and perhaps allstate. haha good work w/ this mvt

  • your competitors must suck

  • 10 at violinist,0 at orchestra ^_^

  • amazing, I'm playing this piece rigth now you're great

  • the winds aren't that bad! your g string is low though...hehehehe that sounds funny(and please do vibrate, it gives a nice quality)

  • In their defense, it's just a community orchestra doing their best. And it's good training to be able to play with all levels of orchestras. (When you play with a pro orchestra there is often a prohibition against taping because of union rules. Hence the appearance of this video, which is does not have any restrictions.)

  • What on EARTH is a fantastic soloist and conductor doing with such a tragic orchestra?? I LOVE this piece, was one of the first 'big' works I played..

  • Very nice, but the fucking orchestra makes me vomit... You don't deserve that and I bet you were suffering a lot while playing, but you do a very nice job!! Congrats!! That orchestra should burn in hell...

  • I thought this was very good. You have great sound and a nice bow arm. Besides the obvious need for tweaking in the intonation and technical departments, I would have liked to hear more passion and emotion from you. I remember playing the Bruch when I was 17 and frequently had to hold back the tears from playing such a beautiful and romantic peice. But that's just me :)

  • intonation für orchestra .... :-(

  • Good, but watch your entonation...

  • No vibration on the open G will not wake Bruch in his graveyard... the song shouldn't start out "dead."

  • The point is to make an alive G string sound without vibrating. It sounds much better without the fake overtone vibrato.

  • If he wanted the note to be vibrated he would have indicated

  • funny, in all my recordings and videos of professional violinists, I haven't heard/seen any of them vibrate the open g

  • um, cohclalcl3cucl, the unvibrated open g is supposed to be a long droned out note... I don't hear/see professionals doing it...

  • I went to a masterclass by Midori where a Curtis student played with a non-vib G and MIdori specifically told her to vibrate it. I've heard pros do it both ways. My teacher advised me to vib, and I like the sound. I suppose you could say it's open to interpretation.

  • who care open or vib? it'd be good only player love it. besides musically you are, your technique is also great! who is your teacher?

  • Lee Snyder in Philadelphia for 8 years

and now Joey Corpus in New York

I also studied with Linda Cerone two summers at ENCORE and with Catherine Cho in New York

  • I like your version better, Oistrakh Milstein. j/k, you have a very good technique, alicelizard.

Such a good violinist as yourself should be playing with better orchestras.

  • very nicely done...to OistrakhMilstein..isn't it better to vibrate the open G? my teacher told me to..? bleh...any help?

  • nice...i really like this piece of music...you really performed it well!

but what is the "dirigent" ( i dont know the english word) doing?

  • Director! :P

  • lovely sound, but technique needs work

  • don't vibrate the open G

  • Great job. Beautiful playing from you! Sorry for my comment on the Shostakovich 8th Quartet. I had 4 windows open and got confused. It is late!

  • I appreciate the violinist and her gracious attitude about her accompanying orchestra, so wonderful. Good work.

  • I don't know if this is really you, but if you do, I'm a student of tamsen beseke, I wonder if you remember her!

  • Isn't this piece awesome? :P
