@HBsongwriter: it was Long John Baldry who reportedly saved Elton. LJB was openly gay back in the 60's when he was having hits (and it was still illegal in England) & Elton was his pianist...he is credited with helping Elton work out his sexuality
what an inspirational man elton john is, he is undoubtably one of the greatest musicians that england has ever produced, and bernie taupin is one of the greatest lyricists of all time, the songs seem to relate to people and somehow become stories in our own lives, thanks for the memories elton and bernie
Love this song every time, I found this song was written after he tried to commit suicide feeling super depressed with this woman he didn't want to marry after all.
Though the video I saw at his show in Vegas shows him trying to kill himself with his head in the stove. He was super depressed, and would've died if it weren't for Bernie or whoever it was who found him. You could see it in his eyes on album release vids for Captain Fantastic that he was just a depressed wreck.
I will never forget this work. I was a plebe at West Point. I would surreptitously slip to the baggage room in the basement and listen to this on a little cassette player and find some peace. What was I doing here?!! There was some other guy I had displaced who belonged here. He was frustrated. I was going out of my mind here because I had no business here. Trying to get my Father's approval. What a waste of time that was!!! Song is really personal. If you don't like the rant then f**k you.
Melodia vellutata, canzone d'amore?

@wwerulestna lol yeah..of course...the stubby fingered piano playing cock lover is awesome..but, alas, better than the stones, the beatles, the floyd, the etc etc....? i beat on the piano too
@fuzzypige222 Listen homophobe, The Rolling Stones suck and The Beatles are overrated to hell as well. Pink Floyd should not be grouped in with them as they are in a league of their own, as is Elton John.
@wwerulestna love the song, the blue canoe is awesome etc etc Daniel, Mars etc, but the aspect of embarcing a brown dirt cowboy isnt for everyone.....sorry...like brussel sprouts arent for everyone either
@wwerulestna If the Rolling Stones suck according to you, and the Beatles are overrated according to you, then frankly, I can say Pink Floyd is pretentious crap and Elton John is an outdated old man.
Don't push your own opinions on artists if you don't want to hear equally ridiculous opinions pushed on the artists you love. No matter how homophobic or stupid they may be.
A timeless classic. (Another) Funny. It held meaning 40 years (Not to mention what wonderful music lyrics). I find myseld in a hurtful place today, and this song Still holds meanings that it did 40 years ago. Amazing. Again, Glad to see Elton came out of his " rough" period, and began living life again, playing music and more. I like his new song with Leon Russel. (If it werent for bad, you'd be good.) Music/ lyrics are can be a very powerful thing.

@captainkill1 There are d*ckheads out there who log onto a song expecting to see a fancy video. I give thumbs up on the song, not the image. If someone doesn't like a song, why click on and listen / view it? We have better taste than that, only two fools so far!
Never truly understood the underlying message, all I know is that it struck a very melodic chord within my soul at the encouragable age of 7 and has never left. I miss those days of this album and of other artists in that era.
When I was a kid in '76, I had an Elton magazine. In an interview in the magazine, Elton said Bernie wrote these lyrics about the time Elton was depressed and seriously contemplated suicide by sticking his head in an oven and lighting a match. Elton went on to say that his girlfriend at the time (about 1970) talked him out of it and showed him the importance of his life and what he had to offer the world. I read that from Elton, so it could be true, I suppose. Editors could have lied
@sheephider82 Thanks for the info. Bernie Taupin is one of my favorite writers and coincidently this song has pulled me thru some really tough times. I'm sure the info is legit, and even if not, I'm glad he (Elton) chose not to take that road out.
This song is awesome. But it's funny you "held a girl close" while listening to it, since it is all about a manipulative woman trying to emasculate Elton and take away his music.
All these (mostly) wonderful comments, and no one has mentioned the fact that much of this song is autobiographical. Elton was engaged to a "dominating queen," but a friend talked him out of it. "I would have walked head-on into the deep end of a river ... praying to your stocks and bonds, paying (?) your HP (=High Powered) demands forever..." CAN ANY OF US IMAGINE WHAT THE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY WOULD HAVE MISSED OUT ON IF HE HAD MARRIED AND LEFT HIS MUSIC?!?!?
this tooooo every one else, didn't forget you...... couldn't figure out where out to place you>>>>>>>>> still love you, everyone that ever touched my life.... cat fights n all.......that made my life where my wut it is today........i wouldn't be who i am today if you weren't a part of my "LIVE" wut more is there to say..........@----{[{[}]}]}]>>>>
What a voice! Youthfull adolescence tinged with the cusp of experience. Takes me back to the time befor the grumpy ol man, befor the responsability, befor the debt there was Elton and there was music in the world and anything seemed possible. It was and is more valuable than you can imagine.........
I was doing some late evening shopping last December. I was walking across the carpark with my overloaded trolley when suddenly the bread fell off the top and landed in the path of an oncoming car. A quicked witted shopper quickly grabbed it before it was squashed under the wheels, and gave it back to me. He then walked off before I could say thanks. I shouted to the other shoppers, "Someone saved my loaf tonight !" They began applauding at this heroic act. The guy never looked around.
When I look back on that period I now realize how much Elton's music shaped my fearful, formative and uncertain transition into adolescence. His music will always hold a special place in my heart and soul. I always founds his music to be a sanctuary when things got rough. Thank you for that.
mY FRIEND SAID LISTEN TO THIS SONG.... If you are going through some stuff, here it out. Man Elton John touches one in the soul, if he doesn't something is wrong with you!!!!!
Captain Fantastic is a monumental piece of work. Someone Saved My Life Tonight and Curtains are two of the most beautiful songs... Both slow anthems about redemption - especially the latter. Knowing he and Taupin wrote such masterpieces, Elton will go to his grave knowing they left mankind a gift for the ages...
@1KSarah I love this song it takes me back to the wonderful days of Junior High, I love the comment above mine I can so relate to what he is saying, I remember getting my first Captain Fantastic album it was da bomb back then, now I need to go find the cd, however, these songs really do make you miss those days

This song deserves a 1000 comments not 15.
Used to be one of the favorites in my high school disco.
My heart still skips a pulse when I hear it.
I used to hold a girl very close to my chest, dancing very tight together at 2 o'clock in the night, feeling the melody of the song as one.
It was dramatic, it was romantic, it was deep, it was everything a 17 year old boy could have hoped for. Lucky me.
I miss those days that are now far away, shining like diamonds through the mist of the past.

Maybe his very best song. Fantastic, outstanding and very moving. Elton touches my soul and stays there.
