  • dude that was close to your finger!... be carefule that you can continue to post videos...

  • @7muktar The strike was expected,

  • @viperkeeper yes i bet that you knew it before... every snakekeeper knows its snakes well... have you ever been bitten by a venomous snake?

  • Be careful. I've seen Fatal Attractions on animal planet and people have died of having snakes

  • @1996nfs More people die from keeping horses than keeping snakes.

  • @viperkeeper thanks for advice I have a horse in Puerto Rico

  • @1996nfs That's a misleading statistic WAY more people have horses than have venomous snakes. It's like saying having a golden retriever is more dangerous than owning a Gaboon viper because more people get killed by dogs every year. More people get killed by dogs because their are millions of them roaming the streets few people have venomous snakes.

  • omg becareful

  • That's why I ALWAYS use hooks to open hot cages, lesson learned eh?

  • i can't see any water, how do they drink?

  • @Byron22Bmc I water them by squeeze bottle.

  • @viperkeeper Ah okaay :D

  • i love the slow motion: aaaaahhhhhhhhh

  • i can comment

  • You gave my my first laugh in weeks since my horse died from a heart attack, when you said, is that ahppy face? and you zoomed in, i dont know why it just made me giggle

I owe you big time for making my day with that

  • @katnjas Glad I could brighten your day. Sorry about your loss. I had two horses that had to be euthanised in the past. I know how you feel.

  • @viperkeeper Thanks, I'ts okay, you're wonderful with snakes, I could never build up the guts to even go near one.

  • and that right there is the one of the main reason i dont keep hot snakes. i think they are pretty but id rather stick to my non venomous pythons and boas

  • hahah! scarey pfft!

  • Yes, of course. If anybody tells you other wise they would be lying.

  • watching the video and listening to the reaction time of you getting scared really put into perspective how fast and how fucked you could be....they'll bite you and be back in their cage before you could even move your hand out of the way O_O....please be careful!

  • @Fourteen88SoCal Exactly the point I am making...all of the 'newbe's' or wanna-bees...beware!!

  • Too close!

  • @ TimmyGal LOL same I was like o shit lol @ viperkeeper did it touch you because it looked like it just touched you as in a miss

  • Whoa!! You are fast man!

  • Ever had a snake drop the food and go after you?

  • @darkpatriot85 Yes, but not sure if it thought there were more rats running around or it was..get the hell out of my cage.

  • and thats why i don't use racks

  • @Dannybroadsword1 If that's what you expect, it's okay but if not, you're in a world of hurt.

  • That second one even scared me, and I wasn't there!!! LOL!!

  • you like to give them food like that?

  • Sure

  • lmfao that scream at 1:38 in slow motion literally made me almost pee my pants

  • lmao i love that scream in slow mo XD

  • AWESOME 5* subbed to you

  • have you ever been bitten before?

  • lmai u sound funny in slow mo kl video

  • Wow, I think that's the closest I've seen you come to getting nailed in a long time, Al. I know it was just a feeding response, but it almost seems like he was really going for you intentionally.

  • Not close at all...just looked that way.

  • HAHAHA check out the feeding response on that gal, omg! =D luckily you didn't get bit.

  • That scream was PRICELESS!

  • God man diz never gets old just like da cobra one. Makes me laugh everytime.

  • al has chuck norris reflexes

  • skills

  • what racks are those

  • Reptile Basics

  • Whoa!! Talk about coming out blasting Al!

  • Dang Al thats the closest ive seen u come to being bit

  • you owe me a new pair of gap boxer briefs.....size xl.

  • Your reflexes are AMAZING!!!!

thanks for covering so many african snakes, i used to have a rhinkals that lived at the bottom of my garden when i was younger, found it wen i stuk my arm into its hole playing with my matchbox cars. afew years later we had a natal rock python and afew night adders move in, happy times

gald you never got tagged! thanks again for the videos, i look forward to them every week and am never dissappointed

liam - south africa now uk

  • Thanks mate, cool stories

    Cheers!

    VK

  • My favorite part of the video is in the slow motion. In slow motion you can see how delayed the yell is to the actual strike. Glad you didn't get bit. ;0

  • hahahahahahahah

  • Great Video Al !

Hope the folks watching it learned a bit about a Feeding Reaction !

Amazing how so many want to use words like aggressive and mean, LOL.

    Best Regards

    John Z

  • Ok note to self don't drink a cup of tea whilst watching Viperkeepers scary shorts lol. Dude that was close, I'm just going to change my t-shirt now as covered in tea lol

  • Sorry mate...that's why they're called "Scary Shorts"

  • Lol it was my own fault, clue was in the title. Great video as usual though Al just glad he didn't get ya

  • wow that scared the crap outta me

  • wow that was unexpected man i jumped when that snake out of no where just wham strick 1 buddy

  • Man, you dodged a speeding bullet.

    Good short video.

  • Viperkeeper, one thing I love about these videos is how real they are! When that snake struck, I jumped.

  • dam that scared me i would grab it wit metal only

    safety first

    camera second

way rather see ground for a bit then see u on the news man but good show : ) 5*

  • That certainly rates as a scary short!

  • lol that made me jump at least ten feet in the air super slow mo of your yelp was funny as crap though

  • Wow, incredible vid! Thanks for replaying all your filmed strikes in slomo, you know what we want to see! Why can't you use a hook to open the drawer while holding the camera? Have you considered ever having anyone assist you in filming while you handle the snakes?

  • I do use a hook but cannot use it and hold the camera, feeder & tongs all at once. Yes, I've thought of that but I don't work with them at a set time and more than one person makes it much more dangerous.

  • Why would it be more dangerous to have more than one person doing this (if you have enough space to work with of course)? I would think that it would be the opposite.

  • IMO..the animal thinks it's being double-teamed.

  • I thought you didn't keep any rattlesnakes, i remember asking you once and you said it was by choice.

  • These were obtained for someone, then they did not buy them, so I still have them.

  • What type of rattlesnake was that? That was a close call too. Last summer I got tagged by a 4.5+ ft. long cottonmouth with both fangs because I picked it up by the tail and had a hook but no tongs. Cost 30,000 dollars but I had 80 or 90% insurence so a lot cheaper. Be very careful, you can't know everything : )

  • Ouch! Never a good idead to tail a Crotalid.

It's a C. pifamorum (Guacario RS) from Venezula

  • The common western cottonmouth is 2.5 ft. long. You have my word that this one was over 4 ft., maybe just over 5 ft. Its body was about 4in. in diameter, it was the biggest cottonmouth I have seen ever, including books, internet, and personal experience.

  • just to see how fast these beauties can be, by the time you started screaming, the thing was already back in the box, incredible speed...

  • Consider this: They are slow compared to Mambas & Taipans

  • scary thought, specially considering you have a few of them in there... how you can concentrate on feeding them AND the narration and recording while keeping out of harms way is amazing.

  • It's difficult sometimes...

  • I can imagine. Greetings from Valencia-Spain. :-)

  • thats scary

  • OMG I thought that one had you for sure!!! Holy cow!

  • That was just a "near" miss , never got closer than 6-8 inches... I've had 6 REAL close calls, "sniffles surprise" & "King size surprise" are two that the camera was rolling. I had my adult Puff adder bounce off the flash on the top of my camera, inches from my head. The other 3 I don't even like to talk about....misses by fractions of an inch. So this was exciting but missed by quite a bit

  • I'd maybe prefer to take a bullet than a headbite by your adult Puff adder.

A headbite by a adult Puff adder must hurt like nothing else, and it happening must feel like a true nightmare, something close to being eaten alive by a giant python. Isn't that the adder that usually doesn't let go easily ? With the vampirical oversized fangs ? I wouldn't even be concerned about the venom the first few moments just get that adult puff adder off my face. Stay alert and keep those reflexes Spidermanesk!

  • Yeah...I'd take the bullet too.

  • Beautiful snakes Al. It was close because you know what you're doing.

    Jeremy

  • oooooooouuuuuooooooouououooooooouououooooohhhhhhhh, yiiikkeess, haha scream in slow motion

  • another great vid keep up the love fo this hobby :)

  • Man dat was funny how u reacted

  • I knew it was coming but WTF!! scarey

  • U know dat vid of wen dat cobra strikes at u? Well read my comment on it.

  • The boxes look like polyethylene, which is transparent at about 10 microns (i.e. room temperature). Probably the snake knew where your hand was before you even touched the box.

  • Oh they can very well. It was really fun when the "purps" were in there, not those are out just to bite cause they can.

  • It is also interesting to see how the snake combined IR cues ("there is warm food in front of me") and visual ("there is a strange wall which is transparent in IR but not in visible light, so I have to bite around it") using its tiny brain, particularly taking into account the absence of such materials in nature.

  • Yes, it's a great study in the mechanics of the strike.

  • Maybe K. Kardong ("Kinematics of rattlesnake strikes") needs to make an upgrade of his paper.

In other news: New snake found in Israel (but nonvenomous, so it will probably bite you), youtube-code=pMEz0qJLHbc.

  • Woah, that was close!

  • Can Crofab be used for that species or would a Mexican Bioclon a/v be necessary?

  • CroFab from what I know is not too effective on American Crotalus no less than South American species. Bioclone is my first choise.

  • man the vid kept stopping

  • Wow...close....

  • damn....you really should have used a hook.

  • Wow almost got ya there. Anyways great video. Looks like your rattlers eat pretty good

  • Wow, close call!

Amazing animals, great job keeping them happy and healthy!

  • mentioned that it was too bad they are "mean" in passing while getting to my point that I think they are neat and would make a cool pet if they had a nicer temperament.

a venomous snake is no "pet" under no circumstance.a cat or a bearded dragon is a pet,not this kind of animals

    greetz

    dave

    very nice rattlers Al

  • Hi Mate:

These are just beautiful, very laid back when thery're not hungry.

  • hi Al,

indeed they remind me a lot of my C.unicolor 's,of course they are closeley related to.ther equal snapping for food lol.

i get a pair of pifanorum in oktober on the snakeday

    greetz

    dave

  • no shit... hence the IF they had a nicer temperament.

    pet is a relative term.

  • It just looks closer than it actually was. I've had a few that makes this one look like it missed by a mile.

  • holy cow close ccall man :P

  • i just want to know what kind of camera do you use cause your videos are so clear!

  • Sony DHC-96

  • Hey al =) didn't mean to pick a battle. Some times the fingers gets it their way.

About watching videos and learning like you wrote. I have to say, and there are many people out there who'd agree that you really teach out a lot of good stuff. completely free.

And every video is highly appreciated. Just a reminder that there are still people who actually is taking this in and learning, and appreciating your work. And please take care, we don't wanna see you lose a digit. Cheers

  • Al ! That scared the crap out of me ! Damn that was close...

  • Not close at all Alex..missed by kilometers compared to a few close calls I've had.

  • what were you feeding them, little chicks?

  • I would also like to tell you that I am finally going to keep a 'venomous' snake. Although I am fundamentally against venomoiding, an acquaintance of mine has a venomoid crotalus oreganus and is no longer abe to keep the snake due to where he is moving. He also rescued the snake from being euthanized at the animal control center ( taken in a raid ) I plan on treating the snake as though it is fully intact because I know that it may well be. I am also going shopping on midwest very soon.

  • I have a question about racks. My menagerie is growing larger and larger and I would like to think about moving to a rack system for some of my snakes. My biggest concern is that the snakes would be able to somehow get through the opening in the top between the lip of the tub and the top of the rack. Is this possible? We all know that snakes are able to do impossible things when it comes to inconveniencing their keepers so I was wondering if you had any input on that.

  • I use reptile basics racks and have not had any issues with them. The gap is very tiny and there would be few snakes that would slip through that couls reach it.

  • it's too bad they are mean. rattlesnakes are cool.

i wish they had the temperament of a ball python because i think a snake with a rattle tail would be such a neat little pet.

    oh well.

  • 1) Snakes are not mean, people are mean. That was a feeding response, not a defensive strike. Those to are not because the snake is mean, it's because the animal is threatened. Get over it.

  • Get over it?

lol what crawled up your ass dude.

sheesh... why do I even watch your videos with an attitude like that?

  • If you watch my videos and and learned anything in the process you would know that these animals don't do something out of "mean-ness" What crawled up my ass?

The pervasive state of stupidity that grips this country for one. Not refering you you directly per se but in this case you don't seem to grasp the fact that animals react to instincts, not oh there's a human, I just be mean to him.

  • Maybe you need to read comments a little better.

I mentioned that it was too bad they are "mean" in passing while getting to my point that I think they are neat and would make a cool pet if they had a nicer temperament.

They are aggressive and dangerous. By human standards that makes them "mean."

If you want to split hairs over the use of the word "mean" then whatever but maybe you need to go make some more human friends before getting so bent out of shape over the obvious.

    bye.

  • They are not aggressive and dangerous when you frighten or restrain them. Yes, you apply a human standard to a non-human animal, makes no sense at all.

Technically they are not unlike any other life form on the planet, trying to make a living using what the creator endowed them with. Humans on the other hand are aggressive and can simply go out of their way to kill another human, for no other reason as "I didn't like the way he looked at me" Rattlesnake do no such thing.

  • cool, let's see you handle them then.

  • Why don't you un-subscribe like you said you were, you're being a pain in the ass now.

  • cool vid loved the strike lol may i ask what type of rack is that.

  • Reptilebasics Very nice people to worl with. Good quality, nicely designed. Great prices.

  • I just dont think he is a big fan of stupidity...

  • I'm not defending anyone but you need to look on this from a different perspective. Al answers more comments, mails, and other crap than you can imagine. And the way you wrote your first comment it sounded like you where a little girl thinking of venomous snakes as pets. Which is just stupid actually. Your point of view was just from another reality than an expert who has worked with these animals his entire adult life. And maybe he was tired of silly comments.

  • "it sounded like you where a little girl thinking of venomous snakes as pets. Which is just stupid actually."

lol you people need to chill out once in a while. You take life wayyy too seriously.

from the way Al says things like "Mr. cobra-cam!" and has videos of this nature posted I didn't realize people working with venomous reptiles also became so unfamiliar with human interaction and this cool thing called imagination and enjoying life.

    I'll just unsub.

    peace.

  • exactly its like ur not a snake ur a person go out side and get a life

  • Oh I have a life just the more people I meet the more I like my venomous snakes.

  • Dont listen to this kid Al.... Look on his profile all he does is play video games..... I would say you have more of a life than dinomanj haha. Anyway thanks for the vid and keep them coming!!!

  • Are you serious?? HAHA....

  • why did you use the hook with the first animal and your hands with the second and third??

  • that slow motion 'scream' was hilarious, glad to see that the sound in the slomo came back for the long term.

you should be a fighter pilot with reflexes like that.

  • Tried, my eyes was not good enough.

  • Holy s#%t that was close.

  • holly cow al! that was close!

  • Helps when you know it's going to happen

  • lol yea but even in knowing its goin to happen you can't always be prepared for how close its actualy gona get. I actualy thought it got ya there till i watched the slow mo. I tell ya man you realy get my heart beatin sometimes

  • Wow thats scary!!!

  • Lovely rattlers, but I think you should move them to a bigger container. those racks looks a bit small compared to the snakes size.

  • Yikes!!! use a hook please :)

  • theyr cute wee things eh

  • phew.. a little to close. Scary stuff :)

  • those are pleasant little fellows. glad that was only a "close call", Al.

  • If it did tag you, what would be the first thing you would do?

Do you keep anti-venom? Or would it be a call to 911?

  • I don't have serum for those little beasties, so it would be off to the ER while calling my emergency support people.

  • Careful does it Al, she is a fiesty little skallywag isnt she !!!

  • I wish you'd use a coat hanger thats atleast something you can use 1 handed for something like those bins when you have a camera in hand.

  • Please use a hook. That was too close!

  • Yes, I do like the one bin before that one. Just a demonstration on how easy it could be to get bit.

  • Okay great. Just hoping you're safe is all.

  • holy smokes batman! that was a close call most def ;-)

  • Wow that was close!

  • My god, that was incredibly close!

  • now that was a close one al! gorgous specimins though

  • jesus, you went kidding.

  • scared the crap out of me

  • They mean business...

  • good to know im not the only one up right now, nice vid as always AL

  • that was a close one.

    very nice snakes as well.

  • Whoah!!! - Mouth open, Fangs poised ready to go. Your fingers were inches away from that. Be careful dude...Use hooks, not hands. Glad to be this videos first viewer and first rater. Love you're work Al....What species of Rattler is that again...and why do yoi generally not keep rattlesnakes?

  • Just not a big "rattlesnake" guy

  • Is this because of the Timber you came across when you were 17? Or not alot of interest...

  • Just not really interested

  • 5*s Totally cool video AL!!!! Jack in a box I guess LOL Hence the values of always staying ahead of their behavior and staying alert and predicting their actions.
