  • Have to agree the boss pedal sounded best. The others sounded distant and not nearly as full.

  • for hardcore punk?.......which is more used?

  • Boss METAL ZONE you amateurs!

  • that chugging low end of the metal core speaks to my heart

  • Metal core is good because it has more low end but the Fullbore is the best sounding one also the Fullbore can make a shitty amp sound great.

  • Metal core by far.

  • 1:25 for actual shootout.

  • Metal Core is by far the winner

  • Hardwire Metal Distortion! The MXR sounds like a treble-heavy fuzz-box. No balls!

  • So much treble on the Mxr. I think ill get the hardwire. Boss was good but I like its metal zone better.

  • Any blackstar pedal do better than all theses pedals..

  • why there is no METALZONE ?? BOSS MZ-2

  • @rokenrol17 its mt-2 dude

  • @sivkako16 ya dude..haha.. i mean i hope he reviews more about mz2

  • @rokenrol17 its actually the MT-2 metalzone not the MZ-2.

  • @TheSchafer78 oh ya, i was confuse.hahahaha..but same there is no metalzone.hahaha

  • @rokenrol17 lol are you serious

  • This video leaves out a lot. I would take the MXR any day. Not only does it sweep the other two in sound, but it includes a bass scoop, a noise gate, and has a mid range freq selector.

  • Please Tone King, bring up the mids :) i still dont have the least idea of what these pedals sound like actually..

  • The REALLY shitty thing in distorion pedals is that they have this annoying buzzing sound...

  • Is it normal that my MXR FULLBORE sparks when I plug in the adapter? Or is it just too metal for me? Im gonna complain that this pedal is crazy noisy. So much so, that my Boss Noise suppressor on full, AND the built in noise gate on is not enough for me to have band practise without terrible terrible feedback.....so much treble too. It sounds good when you drop tune your guitar to the pits of hell. Maybe my 75 watt amp pushing a 200 watt cab, is the feeback? No headroom maybe. NS-2 infront of?

  • @bramabull111 I don't think it's meant to spark. Then again it could be the lead as I've known leads to spark. Also yea check your amp but most of all get the pedal checked before it blows up another expensive piece of kit.

  • mxr.................

  • I really don't get the appeal for pedals. Why buy a pedal like this when you can get MUCH better tone if you just bought a decent amp MAYBE get a tube screamer or a sinilar over drive pedal if you wanna push your dirty channel further but why spoil valve tone with solid state hardware? Useful pedals such as noise gates, compressors and tuners are all good but distorsion pedals just gives the tone of a wasp in a tin can.

  • Fully aware of typos in my previous comment. I suck hah.

  • I do not like the MXR and the Boss is trash. Hardware sounded best. But all sounded like crap in this vid. There are so many other vids that make all of these sound much better.

  • fullbore is killer!

  • The fullbore is the highest gain and the heaviest. Perfect for a Dimebag tone :D

  • Wots he using to change from pedal to pedal? hes not pressing the pedals themselves but some other thing down there? wot is it? how does it work????

  • hahaha...that fullbore sounds like a pissed off wasp in a tin can!!!

  • which one do u prefer?

was very fond of the the fullbore but sounded really muddy and digital dist. on this vid.

the hardwire sounds like the best between those. i'd really like to know which one u prefer, it would help a lot thanks for the shoot-out, really helps.

  • I have MXR Fullbore but I like Hardwire Metal Distortion. I think is higher for heavy metal.

  • I have the MXR Fullbore ...thing is amazing!!

So much shaping, and a crapload of distortion.

  • full bore sliced 'em all! and set my mind on buying one..so that i could trash my previous metal distortion (artec crazy metal)

  • ya but dude serusly plalm mute notes and stuff u just play bends and chrods

  • The fullbore metal is a great pedal. I own it myself and i could not be happier it turns a little amp to a big amp seriously. You just have to move the settings around to get the perfect metal sound. My sounds thick and crunchy CHUG CHUG CHUG its awesome. This is a bad review for the fullbore sorry.

  • LOVE my MXR. :)

  • ML 2 sounds thicker by default. The Fulltone sounds like fuzzy trash, and the TL 2 has the most definition and clarity. I have the TL2 and its a great pedal .

  • metal core is the best...................

  • my vote goes to boss ML-2...seems to sound beefier & thicker to my liking :)

  • i think fullbore creats more variety and its better for lead guitar . :)

  • you are out of tune man...

  • lol at Fullbore struggling to even keep the intensity of the original signal. high-gain distortion alright.

  • This is not a good review: Im gonna explain it why no.

The circuit pedals, especially the potenciometers doesnt have the same running in all the brands the different companies uses. So, you CANT (by fact) do a Demo setting up all to 12", simply because you dont visualize the complete spectrum of sound of the pedal. Your should use at least 3 eq and volume combinations. In the other hand, if you´re going to check "metal pedals" TUNE YOUR GUITAR TO D (at least) or a lower tune.

  • Don't get the wrong idea. i love your reviews, but i would prefer if you would actually play something heavier when u demo metal pedals. maybe some dropped low tunings or something like that. It would really help me out, thnx.

  • Not gonna lie. I have the hardwire pedal, and it made my marshall mg sound like my friends mesa boogie. Beast :)

  • I would like to buy all three

... there is not a better one for metal .. it depends on your style of playing ...but it if are versatile you´ll need a lot of pedals....

  • i play live almost every week and the fullbore is extremely fuzzy through a pa system, unless you go through an amp first and mic the amp and the boss metal core also sounds pretty fuzzy through pa system but once agian if you amp and mic it it sounds great and i dont trust digitech so i dont know what it really sound like

  • @beingthewanted94 i would always use an amp anyway, just so it models the sound. i just got the digitech tl-2 today, and I LOVE IT. i've used digitech pedals for about 5 years now (in chronological order: rp-70, metal master, rpx-400, and now the hardwire tl-2) and i've never had any issues.

  • @firelightguitarist ok sweet it good to hear some feed back on my comments umm mabee in the future i might try out some digitech equipotent thanxs

  • @beingthewanted94 no probs. if you decide to get some of the "metal" pedals by digitech, i would say go for the others before you try the metal master or the death metal. they get really gritty and nasty at certain frequencies, and lack a gain control. other than that, digitech makes great stuff!

  • @beingthewanted94 All pedals sound like that. You either need a digital preamp before the PA or run in through an amp. Simple as that :)

  • ?How much(in Dollars) is the MXR fullbore metal cost

  • @arielagabli about $100 depending on where you buy it

  • what guitar is that?

  • @card1100 Ed Roman Quicksilver

  • @lmsjr just wondering if a pedal like one of these would burn valves out quicker ???, i've heard all sorts of stuff about sticking a pedal like one of these in front of a valve amp, but id like to know from you, if i got one of these pedals, would it affect my valves in anyway ???

  • Hey Tone King, I appreciate all that you have done and still do for all of us who can't afford to go out and spend an arm and a leg on amps, guitars, and effects. You make some very good reviews. I want to know if you would be willing to do a OD perdal boost shoot-out. I would like to know how each OD pedal sounds boosting a particular amp. Thank you and blessings from California.

  • BOSS BESST. full tone :)

  • Boss sounds the cleanest heavy to me. Digitech too digital and mxr is not natural enough so I say boss but my opinion.

  • fullbore is kinda trebly?

  • Fullbore Metal!! by the way, I just placed an order for it in Amazon... great metal sound!!

  • this is an unfair review, every pedal has different setting on which it sounds better, if you just put them pointing to the north then you don't really learn anything about the pedal it self

  • Your low end must have been eaten?

  • Fullbore is the best, but you should have lowered th heights a little bit...

  • Metal distortion from a good amp (whether solid state or valve) is streets ahead of any "metal" pedal.

  • Boss Metal core

  • i vote for suhr riot

  • mxr

  • fuck all gain, mids and bass

  • this is the WORST reveiw because ive heard them all b4 and they sounded heaps good, this sounds like shit

  • they ALL sound like total shit !!

  • @hevechvy, agreed.

  • I've been trying to decided between a Danelectro 7 band eq or is the Boss GE-7 worth the extra $70?

  • @bigcatroberts If you've got an effects loop try the Dan, it can't do any harm there. Use the money you save to make sure you've got good cable, especially speaker cable if you've got a head and cab. Duh, I know, but I had to use a cheapo this week because I left my good one at home and it was surprisingly different in a "turd" kind of way.

  • @Notjustforfreaks I actully ended up getting the MXR 10 band

  • MXR Fullbore ftw

  • i am a proud owner of the fullbore metal and it sounds awesome. the only complaint i have is it could have more bass but not a big deal.

  • METAL ZONE

  • Of course a good head is preferable, but pedals like these are good for putting in front of a small practice amp in your bedroom. I like a hot rodded JCM 800 sound and the new Boss ST-2 Power Stack is fantastic for that.

  • I think the MXR had a really pantera-like sound. That brutal dirty heavy distortion.

I have always fallowed the boss pedals to see whats new and I like them very much.

I dont't have so much experience of the digitech pedals but i think it holds the conditions.

    My votes.

    1. BOSS

    2. MXR

    3. Digitech

  • thanks for the review but next time please adjust them to metal sound and play metal because I couldnt understand from all these airy chords. But I think with some tweakenings mxr will produce the most crhushing sound between these.

  • I prefer Hardwire.

I actually own that pedal, so I am not really used to what the other two offer.

  • hardwire win!

y most like fullbore? its sound like a dist from a multifx....

  • the mxr has so many more good features than the other pedals and it is good for heavy rythem if you crank the gain and it is also good for soloing and lead me and my rythem guitarists use it in our band

  • Meh, I prefer a good amp, maybe with an overdrive in front. If I had to pick one, it would be the digitech, it was by far the clearest, has the most Eq options, and is cheaper than the Mxr. The boss was okay, nothing special, bit fuzzy. The Mxr sounded digital, fuzzy, muddy, thin, and generally quite shit. Does have a noise gate tho.

  • The fullbooar pedal sounds like the shitty ass digital distortion amp. I'd by the boss metalcore on personal preference.

  • Comment removed

  • i cant really tell the difference cos your playing chords and rock riffs, play some metal! :P

  • so...

1 : Mesa boogie dual rectifier

    2 : Engl powerball

    3 : a crappy line 6 spider thingy...

    i hate distortion pedals

  • @METALMICHEW I'm sure that anyone with any common sense at all about sound knows beyond a shadow of a doubt that the natural tube distortion found in a real tube-based guitar amp is far superior than that of a freakin pedal. but most people can't afford a Mesa or a Engl ( for most, not even the head,) an any idiot would no to leave line 6 alone period. most people want to be able to produce heavier sounds from their old Fender Reverb or add distortion to an old boutique with one clean.

  • see i own the boss ml-2 i hate it

  • 1.MXR

    2.Hardwire

    3.Metal Core

MXR have nice distortion and my vote MXR FullBoreMetal

  • 1.Hardwire

    2.Fullbore

    3.Metal Core

  • MXR Fullbore Metal is the best!!

  • Blackstar Distortion pedal

  • Fullbore is good for metal...............

  • @melsor65

Metal core is good for Metalcore :P

  • I am interested for that pedal but on bass guitar. Can someone try it pleas

  • Those all sound cheap and fizzy as fuck, If you want 3 exalent pedals to check out check out the MXR DISTORTION 3, HOMEBREW ELECTRONICS FULL METAL JACKET, OR THE KRANK DISTORTUS MAXIMUS! They are warm tube like tone and great gain!

  • EHX METAL MUFF!!!!!

  • i studio recorded video like this would ba AWESOME

  • 1. Either MXR or Boss.

    2. Digitech.

  • METAL CORE ROCKS....

  • I have tried and owned 2 of these pedals (Digi and BOSS) and I reckon the Digi takes the cake. The Tight and Loose switch gives it some great versatility. The pedal has monster output and so by having the Level knob at 12 o'clock it's actually above parody and so drives the amp a bit, that's why it sounds a little off to me in this demo.

  • i've played all three pedals, and honestly the TL-2 is the best. The BIGGEST reason is because it's the only pedal that didn't make an obnoxiously loud squeal when cranked up it's Level knob. The Noise Gate on the MXR really sucked. The Metal Core is fine, i would recommend it but not over the TL 2

    Some other things are

the MXR has a shit EQ treble is way too overpowering

the Boss from my experience is just too loud(feedback)

The Loose on the TL 2 isn't very chunky, its more wet and weighed down

  • 1.digitech

    2.mxr

    3.boss

there good but the boss is not that powerfull

  • @ 8:29 the mxr's palm muting sounds so bawlsy. imagine tht tone with a bit more twekaing mabye (youtube sound ugh) and it would sound great for low end tuned metal. i hope ne ways cause im stuck on buying it so far

  • METAL CORE its heavy and has a great tone

  • you know, you would make much better reviews if you cut down on the talking

  • I find Metal Core has better sound quality (great for studio) and it can be used as overdrive with single coils. It really did miracles when I tried.

  • You aren't even really getting the actual tone over youtube unless you are on 1080p and still there is audio degredation

  • fullbore sucks ass. i'd be content with either the hardwire or the ml-2 based on this video. Yesterday i tried the ml-2 with the ge-7 and it was mind blowing. Not too digital and not to harsh and it has tons of gain. perfect for modern metal. I'm waiting to get my own ge-7 today and i'm gonna try it with my metal muff to see which is better of the two.:)

  • Why do you have so many amp's? :SS

  • They all sound flat and empty to me... is it the recording?

  • have the metalcore, like it while playing heavy rythms but dont really think it fits led very good. In the video both the Ml-2 and the fullbore sounded very good, but the hardwire doesn't sound good at all.

  • A fullbore and the TL-2 might be able to give out the skyscraping treble I crave. I hear it from the Fullbore with everything on 12 already!

  • The MXR sucks total ass, I'm sorry - but the hardwire sounds alright. Can't beat the Boss ML-2 though, especially for its next-to-nothing cost in the used market.

  • the sound of the digitech is better for rhythm but the metal core rules the lead.

i have this digitech and when i do a solo i combine it with another one

  • I have ml2 and Fullbore at home and they are both awesome but fullbore is my favourite !..It has the most gain so it's not necessary to set it to full :D..The scoop function is awesome...The metal core is also a great one but with the fullbore i have more posssibilities to set my perfect sound because of the 6 reglers + scoop and gate...The gate is also a great funktion that the ml2 doesnt have..I would say for the hard/death... metal fans is the fullbore better ;)..Sorry for my bad english

  • hard wire, i own this pedal and run it through my full stack of Marshalls, JCM dual super lead amp and i get the best sounding distortion out of that pedal.

  • damn that digitech SUCKS

  • metal core!!!

  • I have the Tl-2 and its amazing, with the tl-2 I can play all types of metal, thrash, metal core, etc. Its the best pedal (my opinion).

The second thing: you have a MESA BOOGIE there and you use the MARSHALL¡¡¡. The mesa boogie is the best amp for METAL.

  • @Zkr94 The Roadster probably has a better clean channel which is what you’d want when running a distortion box, but saying Boogie is a better metal amp has nothing to do with testing these pedals. You wouldn’t use the dirty channel on either amp for this test. And yes, the TL is a great metal pedal.

  • @Zkr94 if you use a distortion pedal it should not be used on a dirty channel but on a clean channel so amp is not really important.

  • Newer heared metalcore pedal sounding this bad!!! I got it for myself and i am proud, cuz all other pedals got such annoying white noise in background like fullborn, and shitty as hell sound - not sounding clear and massive.

  • I have the MXR and in my opinion its the best and the video appears to be the best on the video to

  • These should be labeled "buzz pedals".

  • awesome shoot-out i got the hardwire, amzimg pedal, true bypass, alot of gain, and when your turn down the guitar voulme from your guitar its clean up very nicely!

  • i love the hardwire!

  • the mxr work a lot better with low tunnings and the scoop on

  • @redeemerx666 yesssssssssssss

  • Comment removed

  • Mxr !

  • Great demo. I am looking for one over-the-top for my pedal board. MXR gets my vote. Has a noise gate as well. I like the tight and loose settings for the Digitech, versatile sounding. No wrong answers here. All great pedals.

    1. MXR

    2. Boss

    3. Digitech

  • i like the hard wire

  • digitech wins

  • I was playing a Boss Metal Core in Guitar Center, I think It sounds the best with the Boss Super Octave, and the boss noise surpressor.

  • BOSS motherfuckers! :D

  • Boss

  • Wow, the Boss is the best! Before this video I was seriously buying a Fullbore, now it's the ML-2. I used to have a Metal Zone, it was cool, I want something new though. I like the new Metal Core. The MXR is 2nd, but it's overrated.

  • I think the metalcore is the best

  • i <3 tonelounge. but im a digitech fan.. all the way

  • I vote for the Boss ML-2! With an extern EQ, it sounds better than everthing else!

  • Hey TTK thanks for the demos! flamepunch8 is right if you want to reach the metal crow (you do), tighten up those chops for the demos of metal amps and pedals. Say, now which pedal won in your opinion and why? Still using it?

  • MXR - by far

I can understand people thinking the that the MXR has too much distortion and not enough warmth or bass in the distortion

i thought the same when i did my own version of this shoot out, which also included Cool Cat metal, Blackstar Distortion X

then i discovered the settings below; now this is the best distortion pedal ever!!!

    Freq - 9 o'clock

Gain - 11-12 o'clock (even lower still is plenty of distortion for this pedal)

    Low - 1 o'clock

    Mid - 12 o'clock

    High - 8 o'clock

  • @szadgan

I have the MXR also. I am still messing around for a good tone. Can you send me some other presents to good metal sounds? I am gonna check the one you posted. Thanks man

  • @DBCdestroyers

I'm pretty much set on this...with scoop and gate on.

The only other setting i've tried was; gain on 2 o'clock, freq at 12 o'clock with the others being the same. If you take scoop off you get a nice Pantera sound. If you set gain lower, and up the High's slightly you can get a Metallica sound.

but i have left it on the setting i mentioned before and use scoop button to go from old to newer metal; works nicely for me

  • i like the soung of the MetalCore

  • mxr too much on highs i tried one and yuo cant get the highs down the boss well its ok the hardwire i thought was pretty sweet

  • hardwire

  • I vote the MXR Fullbore Metal. It has a visceral element that the others lacked. It makes for a fullbore metal experience!!!

  • TTK i have a question does humbuckers without cover give more output than with cover?

  • RTION xD not good for me cause i'm playing kamelot, metallica and other bands.

And again thanks for the video ;)

    greez

    fangerous200

  • hi dude :) great instruction thx. i want to buy a metal pedal but well i don't know which xD

ok your video: the Boss Metal Core is my favorite pedal, because it has a cool metal tone and yeah i like Boss :) most pedals of them. i bought a Boss ME-70 and you can switch to the Metal Core Effect. There are also the settings: Metal, Distortion, Fuzz etc. well a little bit from that :)

I like the Hardwire pedal too but it's a little bit strange I don't know xD and finally the MXR... TOO MUCH DISTO

  • the fullbore metal or the dime distortion? i'm thinking dime distortion because i think it sounds bigger, but there isnt much about in on the interweb

  • Boss FTW

  • metal core wins for me ,bin the rest there shite

  • de digitech is crap the mxr has a pretty dirty sound the best is the ml-2

  • fullbore metal for sure

  • i disappointed at the sound of hardwire...

  • God actually play some metal riffs so we can hear what these things can do. They weren't built for blues.

  • I own the Fullbore and his settings are WAY off if you're trying to get the best out of it. Don't judge the MXR by this video alone. GO and try it yourself.

  • Hardwire is a metallooser..I think Fullbore is better than Metal Core because it have much more of gain and there is a noise gate.
