From what I understand, they made a list of things that were important/needs to be done, etc. in the movies. But that doesn't mean that M. Night HAS to follow the list. He's doing what HE and Paramount wants.

Looks pretty bad ass, this movie has a chance because as over the top the show can be they do base a lot of the fighting around kung fu styles for different elements. Where as DBZ everybody can fly and get knocked through buildings and make the planet shake just by powering up. I don't even know why they tried to make a ridiculous over powered but enjoyable anime like DBZ into a movie. The hair alone would cost too much for the budget.

Tom cruise could pass for a german, brad pitt could pass for an austrian, and hugh laurie can easily pass as american (the producer or director even praised him for being a great american actor, he didn't know who laurie was, while criticizing british actors as having phony accents) etc. They can't pass as the cartoon characters just based on appearance. I can see your point here, only because it would be anachronistic. It would not be historically accurate to cast yellow people, as you say, because they were not in that part of the world. However, Avatar doesn't take place in any historical point in time on Earth. There is not even an Asia to have yellow people in the first place. avatar is obviously implied to take place in a world similar to ancient china/japan. from the martial arts to the clothes to the accurate writing and use of some chinese words in the series, i think we can safely assume that the show is heavily based on asian culture in ancient times.

Well that's an entirely different issue based primarily on testimony and preference. I don't think it necessary for the actors to look just like the cartoon characters. If they wanted to do that, then they would have simply kept the cartoon. The goal is to re-create or re-invent the cartoon version and put their own slant on the characters.

Hollywood has a long history of marginalizing minority actors and whitewashing properties like Avatar -- they'll only stop if we speak up and tell them that it's not okay, and that we won't stand for it.
I think people have the right to complain...Hollywood has a great track record of fucking up good series. This looks like it will be good though but the viewers should be skeptical.

ive said in almost every one of my comments, the problem is appearance, not ethnicity. Tom cruise could pass for a german, brad pitt could pass for an austrian, and hugh laurie can easily pass as american (the producer or director even praised him for being a great american actor, he didn't know who laurie was, while criticizing british actors as having phony accents) etc. They can't pass as the cartoon characters just based on appearance. I can see your point here, only because it would be anachronistic. It would not be historically accurate to cast yellow people, as you say, because they were not in that part of the world. However, Avatar doesn't take place in any historical point in time on Earth. There is not even an Asia to have yellow people in the first place. Of course it is influenced by Asian culture...I don't think anyone is denying that. It is also influenced by lots of other cultures. They take influence from Hinduism and Buddhism. They take from Chinese martial arts. They make references to Inuit, Mayan, and American culture. What is your point? So what if Avatar takes from whatever culture. The point I'm making is that there isn't some specific facial features, skin features, whatever physical features, that define a culture anyway.

Maybe not in this case. So let me get this straight. You want the actors to look exactly like the cartoon characters. Well that's an entirely different issue based primarily on testimony and preference. I don't think it necessary for the actors to look just like the cartoon characters. If they wanted to do that, then they would have simply kept the cartoon. The goal is to re-create or re-invent the cartoon version and put their own slant on the characters.

It seems (I could be wrong) you're assuming that Asians all look the same. That there is a way it looks to be Asian. When in fact NO ONE can tell by looking biological physical markers whether they are asian or not, because you don't know if they were born in an Asian country. Plus, young Brandon Soo Hoo, who stared in 'Tropic Thunder' would have made a GREAT Aang. His resume is WAY MORE impressive than Ringers and he's far more experienced, skilled and talented.
Casting call read 'Caucasian or other ethnicity'. This shows a clear preference for Caucasian actors. Hollywood doesn't think Asian actors sell.
The 'New Moon' movie crew had NO TROUBLE finding young Native American/First Nation men to be in the movie. They had THOUSANDS of applicants.

Because the characters did not fit the common stereotype Americans are familiar with. Not Aang, nor Zuko or any of the East Asian-based characters had yellow skin, narrow eyes or spoke with a clear accent.
