If you still don't see the subs, they might be too small, so read on.
YouTube player can display the Captions (subs) in different sizes plus with or without backgrond.
Below are the keyboard shortcuts to use -
Switch the background on and off: press [ b ]
Increase/decrease subtitles size: press [ + ] or [ - ]
