@Ronin6575 Yeah, it's easy to see why. It's funny how some Shotokan players would frown on him for changing things in that branch, when this is exactly what Funakoshi Sensei and his son Gigo Sensei did with it. Tradition and maintaining identity is definitely necessary in karate, but change is as well. I think Asai Sensei strove to find a balance between the two ideals. I also think he succeeded in his own ways.
@deek77 You are quite right. Some people dislike what they can;t understand or what they can't do, and some people are just afraid of change. They are so insecure, they can only think of one way to do anything. I feel sorry for them, because this is very innovative and beneficial to learn.
Who can say when Asai sensei developed this kata? He was insightful and inovative, so, he could have been thinking of it for decades. I don't know about kata copyright, but, the JKA logo is copyrighted and people all over the world use it illegally, so certainly a kata would be disrespected also.
You can make your own kata in your bathroom, if you want. If you want it to be recognized by a respected organization with a serious history, you better spend the years and sweat to rise up through the ranks.
That's where he made his katas in the bathroom takeing a shit. A organization with a history of breaking up (JKA).fuck the ranks & big headded i'm higher better ego trips belts just hold up your pants.
All budo organizations have "history of breaking up"; there are always instructors who form their their own branches and styles.
But JKA is still there, is on good terms with its offshoots, and carries a lot more respectability then some "mfuji0001" on youtube and his "opinion".
I gotta second that. Long term study promotes individuality because the art becomes who you are. That basically means there will be an evolutionary trend to do your own thing and teach your own way. Asai sensei did that very thing.
Absolutely. And every master will naturally shape the art according to his own body and attitude. But you have to rise up through the ranks before you can expect to be taken seriously. I have seen Asai Sensei in action, and I say with certainta that mfuji0001 is way out of line with his sneering.
Well, the source must be considered. The one thing I have experienced with those involved in nontraditional (inauthentic) arts is that they completely miss the point of remaining traditional. A common thread is the assertion that a modern (read altered) approach and techniques has improved the art(s). What they miss is the fact that if you alter the traditional art you have eliminated it. The study of Karate-do, as an example, is a study of original methods, tactics, philosophy, techniques.
It is shotokan. The name of Asai's organization is Nippon Karate Shoto Renmei. And, actually, anyone can make kata but should be along traditional technique and principles. Asai left the JKA after a dispute and formed his own ryu. Nothing wrong with that and it has added another dimension to the vast shotokan array of knowledge. He was a visionary and a pioneer.
Derukugi2, my intent was not to pick fly specs out of pepper. The "original" I use and the "traditional" I use are much the same. It alludes to phylosophy of technique, training methods, tactics, study. The current ryu in Okinawa are not original in the technical sense in that they have certainly had changes. However, they are traditional in that they pass their knowledge along as best they can with original intent. True Shotokan, traditional but recent to the mainland of Japan therefore modern.
@IEKUKATAKA Hi! I seem to remember you commenting on another shotokan video that only ancient traditional karate is real karate or something to that effect! That and your desire to destroy liberals... strangely, your comment here seems fairly liberal compared to some other shotokan practicioners and I quite agree with you on this one.
Brilliant. I am so lucky- just saw Yahara Sensei's Unsu with him doing it at age 60. Traditional, Budo karate is dying out. Thank you so much icanfly595 for posting this.
Wow...I've been watching kata videos across dozens of styles all day but this is amazing. I've got to learn this...

Yes it is. It is a new kata, created by Asai sensei.
If you get to his position, then you do that.

Well, that is one thing that you could discuss forever. For example, at what point do you say something is "original"?
Funakoshi´s Karate is modification of the original "Te" from Okinawa. And they are modifications of whatever was before them...
Karate is actually considered a modern art in Japan. If you want traditional, you study Kobudo.
