  • my car got towed yesterday for the same noise mine turned off on me tho!! im scared subarus warranty wont cover it!! what they do to yours to fix?

  • free transformation to a diesel....CONGRATULATIONSSSS LOL...

  • possible causes:

    lightened crank pulley

reused crank shaft and not rebalanced

lightened flywheel and not resurfaced or rebalanced

lastly a loose nut behind the wheel that dumps the clutch at redline

(when you shift let the clutch burn a tad bit so you dont have the car jerk back and forth)

  • very unlikely that your bearings are spun. sounds like a bad end play bearing which could lead to oil pressure loss at op temp then possibly kill your bearings

  • Same thing happend to my scubee

  • so all wrx 2009 models haves this problem?

  • @MegaSuzukiboy Most scubees will have this problem

  • @davidrussorules

boost solenoid, tmic, up pipe with 38mm ewg, crossover pipe, 3inch catless tbe, radiator, springs, sway bars, fuel pump, injectors, and pro tune. stage two in my books

  • i know that noise anywhere...its the aircon compressor runing without gas in the line...I hope this helps you...cheers from Perth australia

  • atleast it was under warranty, i recently got a 04 wrx wagon and the first day i got it after that night i came home with a rod knock, and apparently the extended warranty takes 30 days to take effect..

  • well if its a bearing its most likely the cam bearing

strange my 08 is stage 2 with 25k on it and it hasnt gone down yet

    knock on wood

  • @chrisios define stage 2..

  • theres alot of videos of newer subarus with blown engines.

look up videos of hondas with blown engines and try to find one made in this decade with a blown engine!

  • @PrimeTimeGrimester Search "piston slap" on YouTube, and see just how many Subaru's come up. It's sick. Alot of them have it straight from the factory. My old Accord had almost 200K on it and ran like it was new, and I beat that thing to DEATH. I thought the Buru's Boxer engines were supposed to be reliable?? Coming to find out that's not necessarily the case anymore....

  • there sure is alot of videos of fucked up wrx's.

  • Which bearing was it?

  • You didn't break it in properly.

  • dang

  • Manufacture defect, you may go and tell those posers to replace your whole engine because its stock and has warranty (i think)

  • @southernclassik I'm sure you're wrong

  • @southernclassik This is the worst engine ever built in modern times. This is why it failed.

  • @southernclassik Youre an idiot dude

  • @southernclassik the reality is the ej25 on north american gas and it's tiny fucking clearance is a recipe for breakage. .003mm to out on the piston clearances, it's little wonder the emission laws are making these things drop like flies.

  • i have a 09 wrx it rattles only on cold start. after it warms up, its good to gooo........

  • @kirkkr83 Why does it rattle?

  • wtf is wrong with these new cars? our 2004 jaguar xjr also spun a bearing! i don't believe that a early 90's merc could spin a bearing!

  • Yes, the issue with the incorrect bearing material was resolved months ago

  • Ive read before in local paper that Fuji Industries had some manufacturing problem with some batch of the 09...maybe yours was 1 of them...

  • Probably a batch of engines built that have the wrong tolerances. Sometimes too tight of a bearing clearence will spin a bearing.

  • i have a 98 model wrx that makes the exact same noise lol

  • I work at a Subaru dealership. SOA changed bearing materials to eliminate a few ounces of lead from the car. Because LEAD=BAD. LOL. They have corrected the problem but there are still quite a few cars out there that can pop at any time. The VIN #s will tell the tale if and when they come in for a motor. It won't cost the customers a dime. UNLESS the car has been modded like crazy already.

  • which ones are to stay away from?

  • Is it safe to buy a WRX now ?

  • @dannukesem Yes

  • i had this at 1400 miles.

  • It sure seems like a lot of people are experiecing the same problem with spun bearings on the 2009 WRX, due to a defect in the car. $25,000 cars should not be having these problems.

Thank you for being honest enough to record it, and put it on You Tube. I won't buy a WRX after watching your video, and other videos showing the same defect.

  • It's only 09' Model made in June-July, it was a car defect due to new bearings made of silver. All other models beside this don't have this problem.

I just wonder if SOA called abuse on this like they do with everything else.

  • I thought that there were a few vehicles outside of that date range that were also affected.

A co-worker had this issue with his vehicle and I was sitting next to a WRX in traffic the other day with this same noise.

  • @jakubgt1 Is the replacement bearings made of silver as well?

  • @wow0yunnies

    No

  • @jakubgt1 So true, I couldn't stand how SOA never owned up to their mistakes. Drove me crazy and never bought another subaru.

  • What does cost of the car have to do with it? What price range of cars SHOULD be experiencing this problem...?

  • any new car shouldnt have this problem man. Yeah you might have ONE or TWO here and there from low oil levels or customer putting wrong fluids in, but for a motor to just spin a bearing all on its own on a new car is absolutely unacceptable if its happening with regularity. obviously theres a defect in either parts, design or however they build these motors

  • i loled at u guys that sucks tho but dgaf u got a warranty

  • Oh god turn it OFF! That sound makes my skin crawl!!

  • It was a manufacture defect ya douche hat

  • or it was a manufacture defect....

  • HAHA DOUCHE HAT NICEEE

    lol

  • i work for subaru and we have had problems with the new turbo cars, jest this weak we have replaced 3 long blocks, i think the turbos are eating the oil up....

  • u can get a OVER SPUN BEARING by OIL LACK not leak and ALSO WHAT IS CALLED OIL STARVATION, wich makes the bearing heat up and brake, giving u play on the rods and making that horrible sound that we all hate to hear.

  • ....is the internals of the STI any different?

  • No they have the same psitons... order part number is identical..

  • Any way to prevent this?...I know that sounds stupid like "If I knew of a way, don't ya think I would have" but just wondering and curious.

  • how does that happen? any noticable oil leaks? something internally starving the motor?

  • Unfortunately I appear to be in the same boat as m00shu316 - just had the car picked up by flatbed to get dropped off at the dealer. I posted a video response of the noises my machine was making. Good luck to all the rest of you that bought one.

  • Kinda weird that the 2008 WRX's had a stop sale because of a similar problem, wonder if my 08 is affected even though they say it isn't... car runs like crap on a stock map, stalls, hesitates, ect.

  • It doesn't have anything to do with the stock map it's just the oiling system for the crank to the rods. I bet it was cylinder 3 that went. For some reason sometimes it just doesn't get oiled well. I just spun a rod bearing in my 04 wrx swapped rs. It sucks. Wish I had the money to get a cosworth crank.

  • Let me re-phrase, MY car runs like crap on the stock map, not the stop saled ones.. The Stop Sale was because of a defective part in the lower. I think it's Cosworth that has an insert "flow diverter" for the oil pan on WRX motors. Also heard #4 tends to go before other cylinders because of the fuel trim being different for that cylinder (Think it was NASOIC Forums).

  • Have you ever driven a wrx previous to your 08? 90 % of the wrx engines that come in to our dealer are cylinder #3, the other one that will randomly go is #1. It's only a huge rarity that 2 or 4 will go. Not saying it doesn't happen but the majority is 3. There are some things you shouldn't believe from nasioc. Spun bearings are caused for the most part by lack of oiling from the crank, not a fuel trim.

  • Any updates on any of this?

  • They replaced the whole engine free of charge under warranty. I have over 4000 miles on the new engine and no problems.

  • Awesome news. I love happy endings. :) Thanks for sharing.

  • did they refund ur warranty??? they should of...

  • They gave me the gold, 10 year 100k mile warranty. Not so much because of the engine tanking but because the dealer screwed up a lot of things on my car swapping the engine.

  • well...i would have made them make me a whole new car...and throw in navigation....

  • Good luck getting that to work

  • not hard....they take the car and resell it

  • if it happen here in malta you will finish in court with the basted agent . i had some trouble with the allternator and had to pay it

  • how many miles on the popped engine? ......What seems to be the average on all the others failled '09's?

  • 1251 miles

  • I been toying with with getting a wrx but it would have to be my only vehicle. And running the crap out of my only vehicle is just dumb.

I'm looking for an ugly light car (cheap) that I can put a chevy 350 with a little money on the engine and race that one.

  • Yeah Warranties come in handy BUT if they can tell that you drove the HELL out of your car then they won't cover you for abusive driving. So a spun bearing means that you drove the HELL out of it so good luck with that one.

  • Completely incorrect my friend. My MY08 threw its thrust bearing out and had it and the clutch plate replaced, at 800km's. (500 ish miles).

I never revved the motor over 2-3000rpm for the first 4000km's by the way.

Warranty ficed it, just like they should, Cause I did nothing but love the car while it was teething.

  • That's odd, Subaru is known for engines that last longer than the rest of the car. Back in the '80s, the car would be a pile of rust after 10 years, but the engine would still be purring.

  • They bumped the horsepower of the regular WRX from 224 to 265 for 2009. Maybe the stock internals don't handle it well.

I don't know if the 305hp STI is beefed up any inside.

  • Stock internals on a WRX should take up to about 350hp I am pushing 340hp in my 03 and I don't have any problems at all yet. knock on wood lol.

  • They don't build 'em like they used to!

  • kinda odd. I hear a lot of people with subarus complaining of engine problems, no matter what the year. Scary

  • WRONG! These cars ARE reliable, too bad many owners are tools. I haven't had a single problem yet with WRX. 145k miles on the clock.

  • Same, except I learnt the hard way. One engine lasted me 10000kms, my next has now done nearly 200,000kms with no problems. Whats the difference with the engines you might ask? Nothing. After the 1st one blew up I simply made sure to warm the engine up fully (i.e 10mins very soft grandma driving) before flogging it (which I still do thankyou) and volia, no more problems....

I guess this poor fella found out this little Subaru Quirk the hard way, at least you have a warranty :)

  • Any engine is dependable unless you just drive like a moron. Then the best engine in the world will come back and bite you in the ass lol.

  • oh shit.. the same thing just happened with my supra haha.. ok this makes me sure then

  • Uuuuuuggghhh that sound makes me sick. Literally.

  • Wow... Mine had the same issue! My #3 rod bearing broke, and my #1 had excessive play. They replaced my whole long block, and will be getting it back in a few days. Glad to know there are others with this issue. Almost re-call time =( HELLA PISSED!

  • I have the same issue with my 2005 Subaru, how much did it cost you?

  • Just got mine back today, and so far it sounds fine... It better since it was a whole new engine! Mine is a 2009 wrx so still under warranty, so they wont give you a new car. Only way you can get a new one is if you qualify for the Lemon Law.

  • Were u flooring it often right when you bought it new?

  • No not at all. I kept it under 4000 rpm and didn't floor it.

  • ohh... hmm u should demand the dealership to replace ur car with a new one or something, cuz its a new car... it shouldnt have to be fixed when it only has 1251 miles... even if they say thell change engines... mind if as well they give u another new car.

  • if u buy it brand ne wu shud wait at least 500 miles b4 u start rantin it about

  • Speak english much?

  • Thanks for the advice...

  • ur welcome

  • That blows where you baging on it? I wouldn't keep runing it you could screw the block up to my buddy just built up his Subaru wrx engine and a rod bearing let go I laughed at him because I run a old 64 chevy 283 and I shift at 7500rpm sometimes

  • WAIT 2 years before getting a wrx.....NEVER BUY THE FIRST YEAR MODEL.....let them fix the problems....wait around 2011 and buy the wrx

  • No, I will better wait until 2015 which is futher away! Wait 4 years, in that time I reached the warranty time and bought a new car!

  • It's been going on since 2007 though from what I've read on the STI forums

  • dude.... your car sounds like a sewing machine. :( What the hell Subaru.... :(

  • I was planning to get a 09 wrx soon, but I guess I am going to wait till this problem is all cleared up. How long do you think this will take to clear up?

  • Mine did the same thing at 165 mi, got a new engine from SOA. But it appears to be from abuse by the delivery driver.

  • ah?

  • Dude, that sucks. My 08 started to spin a bearing before I got the 09. I hope it doesn't happen to the 09. There was a recall for an engine knocking noise on the 08's, I hope they do a recall for all of them and finally fix this issue.

  • It just happened to my 09 wrx. I dropped it off at the dealer and said that they were going have to pull the motor to see what the problem. How should I go about getting them to get me in a brand new car vs a rebuilt engine?

  • How many miles on the car? From what I've seen they'd consider a new car in this situation is if it's very low miles (=< 250). But if that doesn't suite you cause a huge fuss, that seems to get people what they want more often than not.

I was fine with a new engine + 7 year 100k warranty + some other stuff because they fscked up the engine install pretty bad.

  • How many miles were on your failed engine? What seems to be the average milage on these failed engines before they do?

  • 1251 miles

  • This is scared thought for WRX 09's owner. What if it blew after the basic warranty, then what? Question, how did it happen? Did you drive it hard and the engine spun or it happen by itself. Really want to know. Anybody? Please......

  • If it blows after 36,000 miles you're pretty much screwed if don't have an extended warranty. But the problem is showing itself anywhere from 100-2500 miles. Well under warranty.

Mine happened on a normal drive home from work. Never went over 60 mph and I kept the RPMs below 5k. I didn't romp on it at all. Pretty normal easy drive like usual.

  • wow sorri hopefully when i get mines it doesnt have that problem.

  • Got the car back today. The dealer replaced the engine (not just the short block). They screwed up a lot of things on the car so I get to take it back.

  • should have gotten a whole new car...i owuldn't let them idiots work on my car and take it back.

  • sorry to hear that.. sounds hideous. Hope you get it fixed. Please update when you do.

  • hahahaha already?

  • hopefully they will replace it for you, coz i had a mate who had the same problem (on his toyota camary) and the denied the claim coz they said he caused the damage with a miss-shift and made the engine over-rev, which he didnt coz why would he drive hard on his DD family car

  • thats a spun bearing . def demand a new one. Im ordering one next week.

  • I had an '09 WRX 4DR with the same sound... the rod blew and the dealership's bringing me a new car to replace it. Don't accept work on the engine is all I can offer as advice.

  • How do you get that? advice or what angle did you take?

  • I had an '09 WRX 4DR with the same sound... the rod blew and the dealership's bringing me a new car to replace it. Don't accept work on the engine is all I can offer as advice.

  • Google "stop sale on Subaru 2.5 turbo". Ther're saying it didn't pertain to the North American market. You're the second case I've heard about. I own an '09 Forester XT. If mine goes, I hope it's at 59,000 miles!

  • That sucks, warrantys gotta cover that.

  • that sounds like a rod indeed. even the double fires smack it. No excuses.

  • rod knock take it back. Should be covered in your powertrain warranty.

  • Simple, take it back to the dealer, make them give you a new one.
