My 19YO daughter is engaged to an older man whose 1st wife died 2yrs ago- he’s actually about my age. I’ve tried hard to like the guy, but his behaviour makes me question their relationship.
The other night we were having a meal at his place when he placed bowl on the table & announced that it contained his late wife’s ashes! He demanded we sprinkle some on our food in order to “seal the family bond between us”. Because I refused they ordered me out of the house & we haven’t spoken since.
@NESherv Yeah he showed our class this video and he told us that he was the lil boy in the family and that he had a picture of the cast and him in it.
I read somewhere that even in its time, this film was considered almost insanely contrived and limiting, and completely out of touch with how real people lived. I can believe it.
Hmmm, well that is the natural order of things...women must do everything to keep their men happy, including changing their outfits on an hourly basis. Or hoovering whilst naked... ;-)
it isnt important for daughter to do schoolwork, she must focus on learning how to please her husband, even if she does go to college it will be for a MRS degree.
We watched this in our Sociology class this afternoon and I found it on here to show my mum...isn't it weird how much has changed? Me and my parents don't even have a dining room for a start, and eat our meals in the living room on our laps. Do you think we'd have been regarded as cavepeople back then? Hahaha..
God I wish people would learn to edit these things properly. Here's yet another video with a clumsy chopped off ending. Here's a tip for you vidiots out there: at the end, let the audio ring out completely and fade the video to black. Why are these basic production values ignored by so many people?
Has anyone noticed that the two older children, who should have equal standing in the family, are referred to by the non-parallel monikers "Brother" and "Daughter"? Shouldn't they be called "Brother and Sister", or "Son and Daughter"?
LOL My family don't even have dinner together anymore. And when we do, it's the home delivery that gets served. Our topic of choices are "Who's going to get grandma's land and factory once she dies", The thing about someone jumping from the building right in front of my dad's car. Also I fought with my sis about who's going to get the new family car etc. Dinner is often turned into a battle field in the matter of minutes :D
I love the ficticious models used for the 1950's family. It's all just an outdated right-wing Southern Baptist vision of America. Even "normal" families of that age weren't as twisted as this. MST3K understood how insipid and unrealistic all this was, and it's great comedy to boot.
"It makes them want to continue pleasing you!" Excuuuuse me? -_-

Probably the most obvious form of structural functionalism I've seen outside the classroom.

I think it's just because there's no younger daughter ...
Still the whole thing is quite disturbing regardless
