2 months ago, when I'd look for live footage of these guys on youtube, the most I would find were cell phone clips of them in concerts, 360p at best. Now this. Good God I'm so proud. Good things happen to those who deserve it.
All the best bands walk off after a groundbreaking peroformance, take nirvana for example when they did territoriality pissings, they just all fucked off after, WORLD UNITE!
"Calm down guys... it's fine. We can still do the whole Letterman, Conan, Pitchfork Feature interview bit - just so long as we pretend we've no vested interest in it. We've still got enough mystique to keep people from nodding off in the dirge"
Never understood the ridiculous canned laughter/fake giggly nonsense on Letterman. WU LYF's performance was great despite almost being spoiled by Letterman's inane chuckling idiocy.
nothing special about the way they left, they're indie, ofcourse they're not going to wait for Letterman to make cheeky remarks about the (btw awesome) drummer.
the band have said 'and to all those who are defining the end seconds as "pre meditated rudeness" i can assure it was true confusion to what the fuck we are doing on letterman '
I get Letterman laughing 'cause of the "motherfuckers" part and them seeming a bit weird after the song ended but what's really shitty from him is the part at 3:58 when he asks "is that your regular drummer?", Emmery (singer) says/answers something and Letterman just totally disses him off saying "yea, ok".
I saw this band live recently in LA. The guys were friendly and very engaging with the audience, as well as being amazing of course. I guess Letterman didn't deserve the attention WU LYF gives to real genuine fans of their music.
WTF ARE YOU KIDS ALL TALKIN ABOUT these guys are 20 year old Mancunians. Being damn rude is there thing. ian brown, shaun ryder, gallaghers, every man and his dog from manchester acts like that. who are all you asswipes defending them for not being rude. THESE GUYS KNOW THEY ARE BEING RUDE AND WILL BE LAUGHING ABOUT IT BACKSTAGE. he was mocking letterman by bowing at him
No one was being rude here. I think if this was anyone's first time hearing or seeing them they would be a little flabbergasted. I mean, you honestly think that Letterman listens to every band that they book for the show? And the members shook hands with him and waved as they left, you could even see the lead guitarist smiling as David was saying bye because he knew it was kinda funny. C'mon, use your brains.
you can here ellery (the singer) say 'are we going?' at around 4:04 so obviously they were trying to be disrespectful to letterman or the show, they were just confused about what to do after the performance. unite.
can someone post the lyrics. it seems to me he his making the words sound as unrecognisable as possible. more so than eddie vedder, julian casablancas or any other mumblers and wailers
wu lyf ain't like other bands, they rarely do shows or interviews like this and only choose to take part in interviews and shows that they like, admire and have respect, thats why they performed on letterman, so any hostility or disagreement is nonsense. the ending is what WU LYF are about, they're about the music, they do an incredible performance like this and walk off, thats it. All you are left with is the performance to remember, nothing else. Its how it should be done
@kpowef Maybe it could be a way of Marketing the band? just think about it. i don't say that their bad. and i agree on that they got their own sound in some way. but i think this kind of Rudeness or whatever u want to call it.Is just a way to get the band more famous. i know it sounds weird but it could be an new technique in some kind of way.
I saw this the other night it was absolutely Amazing, I never heard of this band till now, Ty Letterman, I'm sure Wu Lyf's album sales are going to skyrocket after this. Enjoy this vid while you can, you know how it goes.
I feel like maybe Letterman was slightly annoyed by Manning not acknowledging him, and Manning was slightly annoyed by Letterman's laughing after his performance. Excellent band/song, regardless.
@ohfoolishworkerbee obviously you're mistaken and your ears must be broken or something. Can you please tell me what made them douchebags? seems to me like youre calling the kettle black. WU LYF is amazing
Dave thought they were great! Some people are just looking too hard for reasons to be offended. Dave's great! WU LYF was great! Lighten up and enjoy yourselves...life's too short.
Ill give them the benefit of the doubt. They are from England...probably dont watch letterman every night and didnt realize most artists stay there and stand. Plus they are probably used to walking off stage after a show which they do every night. And lastly dude did shake and bow to him, i think thats pretty respectful.
They've got a reputation for being media-shy. "Elusive", if you like. Surprised they even went on Letterman but love that they did, tis a great track.
Has no-one noticed that the lead singer says "Wassup motherfuckers" but they cut the mic after "wassup". That's why everyone's shocked/laughing at the end.
@FIXEDbyFIXER Agreed. If you listen the last thing Ellery Roberts screams gets beeped out as he is saying the word "motherfucker"; so Letterman's laughter is based off that and not in condescension toward their performance. Three of the four members of the band politely shook his hand and Roberts even bowed slightly so I don't perceive the band to be judging him, either. Drummer Joseph Manning came off as slightly cold at the end when he just stared at Letterman's extended hand...
@NoDirectionHome19 which I believe may have been the only thing Letterman got slightly peeved at; which is why he asked, "Is that your actual drummer?" but realistically I don't think hr was offended and the drummer Manning was probably not trying to be intentionally offensive but maybe just given the fact it was his first time on network television and the end of the show he didn't realize the expected standard of waiting and bowing to Letterman. "TVGord" is right....
@NoDirectionHome19 People are looking for any reason to judge and attack. Maybe they were offended by the mockery that is late night T.V. and walked off the stage because they didn't want to be there, the show is over regardless, get over yourself. Also, I kinda happen to feel that "Heavy Pop" is one of the unsung, great songs from last year.
You'll notice that at 4:07 they kind of pause after he says "you don't need to leave" then continue to walk off after he says "ok, we'll see you". Nothing rude about it. They just though that after their song they were meant to leave the stage. They even waved as they were leaving. Nothing rude about it.
Interviewed them a while back. The lead singer was literally the biggest prick I've ever met. Arrogant, up his own arse and downright rude. Makes me dislike the band to be honest
@nelrick I agree. it seemed really akward for Letterman to be laughing so hard at their performance. ok, so there was a little "fuck" at the end of the song, so what, it's not like it's something he never heard b4 on his show.
and after, what did he expect, for them to praise him and kiss his feet (like almost everyone who are there do) for being on his show.
@nelrick Well, if I wanted to be on National TV again I 'm thinking I would care. But, being a host of a show, he can do whatever he wants. If WU LYF ever gets a show, they can laugh at him.
@nelrick It was a laugh of joy, surprise, and sheer amazement man! They walked off because they don't need all that attention, they got other things better to do haha Who knows. . .
@hardrocker3825 It's not cockiness. Read a little about the band first and you'll understand why they act the way they do. Also, you can't just say "no talent to back it up". How about you back up what your saying by explaining things a little further?...
I'm not sure why everyones angry they just walked off, if you're suprised I guess you don't know Wu Lyf. They killed it but I wonder if Jimmy Fallon is jealous he did'nt have them on first since he sorta is THE indie late night dude.
These guys are 19 20 year old kids. They probably didn't know how to properly act in the situation. I was on a tv show with my band one time (just a local show though) and we did the same thing. Weren't trying to be rude it's just habit. My set's done, time to get off the stage.
As to everyone asking why they walk off... this band is notoriously anti-interview. They rarely talk to any journalist or give themselves any press besides just playing music. They screw with the press on a regular basis. I think it has something to do with the philosophy behind having very little in the way of intelligible lyrics - they want people to decide for themselves what to make of them (though that's all conjecture on my part).
@Quickgold1 'and to all those who are defining the end seconds as "pre meditated rudeness" i can assure it was true confusion to what the fuck we are doing on letterman' -WU LYF from their facebook..
"He's a stand-in." hahaha! I think Joseph's cute but he's so reserved, it's like he just wants to get their performances over and done with. :( Probably why David Letterman asked if he was their regular drummer.
what was Ellery looking at the whole time? is that what he normally does when he sings? nice suit tho/ hot.. and why was the drummer so cranky? dude played the hell out of those drums, got his shirt & was ready to get the hell out! lol of course Letterman laughed...
@Mikeper94 oh ok -- Ellery or drummer? both? eh whatev.. that's cool- everybody needs a 'thing' to set themselves apart I guess... pity both have been done again & again before... :\ Ellery is hot tho/ kinda reminds me of a british Alex Skarsgard in certain angles...
Haha Letterman's just a smart ass. That's his brand of comedy. If you watch other bands on his show, you'll see that he likes to joke around with them after they're done playing. Looks like he enjoyed them to me :).
@tommythelion Haha, yeah, rude as hell if you ask me. I think he was a little confused, he initially was just laughing because he enjoyed it I guess, and then it turned awkward when they left
The drummer's shirt made me laugh. This band is EPIC.

@Quickgold1 'and to all those who are defining the end seconds as "pre meditated rudeness" i can assure it was true confusion to what the fuck we are doing on letterman' -WU LYF from their facebook..

Letterman is laughing in part because the singer screams "What's up motherfuckers?!" at the very end. I'm sure it was a bit of a surprise.

"He's a stand-in." hahaha! I think Joseph's cute but he's so reserved, it's like he just wants to get their performances over and done with. :( Probably why David Letterman asked if he was their regular drummer.

looks like the drummer didnt like being complimented lol

what was Ellery looking at the whole time? is that what he normally does when he sings? nice suit tho/ hot.. and why was the drummer so cranky? dude played the hell out of those drums, got his shirt & was ready to get the hell out! lol of course Letterman laughed...

I love this band, but why did they just walk off afterwards? That's rude as fuck.

Great performance, although I'm not sure what Lettermen was getting at "is that your regular drummer?" The drummer was well good!

Am I missing something? What was he laughing about?
tommythelion 1 month ago
@tommythelion He liked the performance, it wasn't a 'ha ha' laugh.
xJONROBSONx 1 month ago
@xJONROBSONx That's what I figured, but then I was confused since they almost immediately walked off stage.
tommythelion 1 month ago
@tommythelion Haha, yeah, rude as hell if you ask me. I think he was a little confused, he initially was just laughing because he enjoyed it I guess, and then it turned awkward when they left

one of the best performances ive seen of this song.
