  • It was such an honor for me to have had an opportunity to work in the US Space Program in support of Shuttle and ISS!

  • William Shatner.... The Enterprise.... They should of put a big "U.S.S.S. 1701" on the wing... Lol

  • You blame Bush because your a moron who has to make EVERYTHING political. Get a life.

  • idiot

  • LOL. I love how Bush can't make a speech without looking at the writing every 3rd word... he is such a moron and, not to derail, but it makes you wonder what idiots voted for him....

Who's the biggest idiot, the one who leads or the one who follows.....

  • Lol the shuttle went boom

  • Humankind has failed to find a new homeplanet before the global crisis... it's that simple. The required ressources will never come back. Political Correctness has killed humankind. No space for heroes anymore

  • af 00:50:09 does he say "thats fucked"? or am i hard of hearing?

  • @nader191 Slight southern Florida type drawl. " that's kinda (fun tuh) work inna program lak dis." and YES it did sound like that since he didn't effectively pronunciate the "n" in "fun" and then the pause after the "tuh". It get's better if you keep clicking the bar where he says it and watch his face as he says it, then click again before he finishes the sentence. All in all, you should still have your hearing checked if you still doubt or question your hearing... Do you "hear" me..?? JkLol

  • Does anyone know the song that's playing around 43 min.?

  • On one hand it's been really, really, really amazing all up - but on the other, more like a bus time table with the odd bang along the way.

I think this has been such an important part of everyone's lives, and for such a long time - that it's like your grand parents - they are there and one day they are not.

Then it's like "Ah fuck it" - even though it became another thing running in the back ground, you miss it when it's gone.

Going to REALLY miss the Hubble too.

    Hope the Webb is excellent.

  • whats the song at 1:05:00?

  • @razgriz786 I think it's "The Forge Of Krom" it's the theme music for "Conan The Barbarian".

  • @razgriz786 Whoops, sorry, wrong time. And I thought it was "Anvil of Crom", but that's not it anyway. Sorry.

  • @TalksWithDirt oh no problem! but thanks anyway! =)

  • I was so sad to hear the shuttle program was being retired, but also excited to see what comes next.

  • Nice soundtrack. There was some "Nara" then you had a segment from Star Trek First Contact then wrapped it up with the modern Batman theme.

  • I was thrown off by the music in the opening that they pinched from the Dark Knight soundtrack.

  • Hope they start using saturn v rockets again.

  • Do we as humans want really big armies or really big space agencies? For the cost of the wars in Vietnam or Iraq, how many ordinary civilians could we have put in space? How many greenhouse colonies could we have built? At what point do we accept that we are never going to quell strife between peoples on the other side of the world? And when do we accept that we, our nation, must pursue peace in space without putting out all the brush fires in the world?

  • Shatner says ISS will operate to 2020 and beyond yet they're now talking about splashing the ISS in 2020. First the Shuttle program then the ISS? What a waste.

  • @silvereagle2061 In all fairness, the ISS (Or any space habitat) was never meant to be permanent. Nothing we can build will survive that environment for that long. I think what we are supposed to be doing is replacing individual ISS modules as they become old. In effect, regenerating the ISS as it ages.

  • @greenseaships I would prefer that to de-orbiting her in 2020.

  • @silvereagle2061 Me too!

  • Amazing docu.

  • I want to swim in that pool

  • something worth crying for, i know nasa is going foward but the shuttle will always be my favorite

  • any one know the name of the track on 00:06:25

  • Thanks to all the people at NASA, and others all across the globe, we are able to achieve incredible feats that were not imaginable many years ago, they are the ones responsible for building the backbone of modern civilization... and for such devotion, sacrafice, blood, sweat, and tears, I want to say thankyou for your hard work, even if thanks still isnt enough to repay for all you've done for us.

  • Excellent tribute, thank you.

  • As a Non American can I donate to NASA?

And is it possible for a worldwide donation scheme to be set up?

  • @marmaladekamikaze What we need is a United Nations Space Agency.

  • @Michael500ca

The UN?...You mean that Bureaucratic organization that is so bloated with paper that it rarely lifts a finger? No we don't need that at all. We need more Scientists and Engineers working in the Space industry.

  • @marmaladekamikaze I admit the UN isn't the best organization. It needs to reformed. But it could serve as a model for global space exploration. Maybe I should say we need a World Space Agency then.

  • @Michael500ca

I don't agree with you, Companies do things better than governments, like Space X and their Falcon 9, I believe that is the future. and we already have a World Space agency of sorts, NASA and Roscosmos collaborate a lot. and the INTERNATIONAL space station is another example.

  • Comment removed

  • @marmaladekamikaze Well, I disagree with you. Since government use private contractors anyways, the company aspect is already there. As well, you already proved my point with the INTERNATIONAL space station with governments working together. This shows that a world space agency is in all of our best interests because it has been proven to work.

  • @Michael500ca United Nations Space Command...?

    #Haloreference

  • Absolutely amazing. NASA is demonstrated the very best of humanity countless times.

  • Atlantis can't be the LAST space flight ever? We must do more!

  • If anyone can name the song playing at 45:58 I would be incredibly grateful. I've been searching for that song for years since there are no lyrics to look up!

  • @ic4llshotgun

Dude you serious? WELL SEARCH NO MORE! As someone who was only ten when that song came out...I had to think about it for a moment, I mean here we have a documentary about Space travel and you're just into a song? wtf man! just joking with you! You're a kindred soul, I love that song too, and there are lyrics. It's by 'Moby' , the song is named ''Porcelain'' Enjoy it!

  • @marmaladekamikaze Hahahaha thanks a TON!! Make no mistake - I actually got the chance and talked with Charlie Bolden when he was at a conference I attended in January and I discussed this video with a few people I met at the STS-135 launch, but I just never left a comment about how awesome the video is on Youtube lol.

And I had no idea it had lyrics lol - I only ever caught it playing on the PA at malls & stuff and tried so hard (and failed) to hear any that I could look up...THANKS AGAIN!!!

  • it would be nice if this was closed-captioned :(

  • Music @ 01:12:17 anyone please?

  • What is the music that starts at 00:27:34? What a beautiful legacy of a documentary, very aptly narrated by the man himself.

  • @bolar500 That's "Nara" by E.S. Posthumus... beautiful piece of music :)

  • Need another seven astronauts, LOL!

  • Great documentary.

You got to love all these once great companies, at 17:55 on, that became mega-conglomerates. This is ultimately one of the reason why the shuttle was canned with no replacement. Honestly, none of these companies can make anything that is worth a fu@k anymore. Welcome to corporatist fascism. Your government was too busy bailing out their overpriced weapon systems to fight illegal wars and bailing out the bankers. We don't have great companies in America anymore.

  • @ThePatriotMuckraker nothing is great in america anymore.

  • My all time favourite space plane. The world's first true spacecraft and I love it.

  • An end of an era.

  • An impressive documentary full of great moments of the Shuttle program over the past three decades.

I remember very well April,12 1981, when I was a 13-year-old boy and saw the maiden flight of Columbia on TV, but also I remember the moments in 1986 and 2003, when I heard about the loss of Challenger and Columbia and their crews.

As a great fan of the program from the beginning, which has watched every flight, today I say THANK YOU NASA for this great program!

    Ronald from former East Germany

  • What the track from 1:10:00 onwards? When the astonauts walks outs.

  • This is a great video. Props to everyone involved in the Shuttle program.

  • Anyone know the track at 56:30-59:00???

    Great vid!

  • to Brandonsk33n. Obama didn't cancel the shuttle. Bush did in 2004. Obama actually funded an additional flight (STS-135) GREAT VIDEO. Shatner is the man... Pity he doesn't want to travel into space. That would be AWESOME!!

  • Amazing

  • That was an amazing watch, it's really sad to see the shuttle program go....

  • I can't believe Obama... I hope our next pres. Is like Nixon, for the space program.

  • A sad thing about this video is that it has only 13.606 views while Justin Bieber has more then 580 000 000 views.....

  • @Endar92 It's because Justin bieber doesn't require Intelligence

  • Does anyone know the name of the song at the start of the video 00:00:20

  • What tears me up is that NASA can only have one type of manned spacecraft at a time. They say, "We should've gone THIS way, instead of THAT way." Why couldn't we have done BOTH?! One for working in Low Earth Orbit, and one for going BEYOND it!

Imagine if the Navy had to decide whether to fight WWII with battleships OR aircraft carriers, but not both.

They say the Shuttles were getting too old to fly safely... so build NEW ONES!

And who throws away all their construction tools after a project?

  • The launch of Atlantis on Friday was incredibly emotional. Everyone around the office was huddled around televisions and monitors watching and waiting for the launch of the last shuttle mission ever. When she finally lifted off, everyone felt a sense of joy and sorrow. There were a lot of teary eyes that day. When the commentator said "Atlantis shuts off its engines for the last time" I got a lump in my throat. This truly is the end of an era, the end of one of man's greatest achievements.

  • amazing we have a president who effectively killed the manned space program. JFK must be rolling in his grave right now. a national catastrophe.

  • Does anyone know the name of the song played between 8:50-9:00? The song shows up elsewhere in the documentary, but this is one of the few places I could get a clear snippet out.

  • @UAL1200 Britt Nicole - The Lost Get Found :-)

  • Nice documentary! America can be proud of what it has archeived so far and what it will archieve in the future! It's sad that the shuttle Atlantis will be the last to come home to earth in a few weeks..Watching the nightsky and seeing the space station and the shuttle as little white dots has always excited me. Greetings from Germany!

  • What is the music that plays around 40:30 - 42:10 through the bit about the program relaunch with Discovery after the Challenger disaster?

  • @YowHead

The song is called "End Credits" from the Original Soundtrack of Star Trek: First Contact (available on iTunes). The theme tune is also on the song "First Contact" on the same album.

  • What a beautiful video of our history and story of what we accomplish when we work together in America. Many in the world would love to see us divided, to see us fall and fail. Time and time again we have defied the cynics and changed the world in the process. We must not only remember, we must continue to think, dream, work and reach for above the stars. G-d Bless The United States of America!

  • Song at 4:20 anyone?

  • @filiwian This. Hopefully someone finds out, I really want it.

  • Thank you NASA and thank you YouTube for hosting this amazing video. Very emotional. Isn't the theme at the end of the video from Conan the Barbarian?

  • Thank you NASA, watching the shuttles blast into space has been amazing, godspeed Atlantis, wishing you a successful journey and safe return. Can't wait to see what is next for NASA.

  • Comment removed

  • Fantastic. Must see for everybody!!

  • Congrats NASA, CSA, ESA, JAXA, CNES and CNSA!

  • Quel sacré fusée !

  • After the last shuttle mission we can't send people to maintenance the Hubble. Capsules can't go that height and return back, and those tincans doesn't have airlocks.

  • Who's the retard who disliked this?

  • DARE you to watch this without droping a single tear.

  • It is indeed like losing a family member by watching this video...Godspeed STS-135!!!!

  • go Atlantis ! make it happen one last time.

  • i wonder who the one dislike is? With the end of the shuttles there is the posiblity for new beginings at NASA. Hope to see what the future has in store for us, and may they be as awe inspireing as the shuttles.

  • Favorite!!!! It's emotional, beautiful and entertaining. Oh, and sad at some points. ;( ;). I miss the shuttle.

  • If NASA really wanted to claim the coup of the century.. they would send up into space William Shatner & Leonard Nimoy..

can u imagine the captivation this would have upon the World?

not to mention the kudos & funding for the ongoing exploration of space...

thumbs up if want Shatner & Nimoy aboard the ISS.

  • @moonboots69 Wont happen. Shatner is somewhat afraid of the idea of space travel.

  • @moonboots69 If you love Nimoy check out The Lazy Song with Nimoy. :) Was a GREAT laugh! You will not be disappointed.

  • This is handsdown the best documentry i have ever seen, truly amazing, wonderfull soundtrack-The Funeral Pyre by Basil Poledouris was a brilliant choice for the end credits. Im almost speachless as to just how good this documentry is.

Thank you so much for this NASA!.

  • Guys of NASA. Where are we waiting for? Lets bring our world completely into Space phase! Colonize other planets in the future around 2025. ;-)

  • Awesome and remarkable! , beautiful :)

  • Nice to hear Bear McCreary's music as part of Enterprise's introduction. Very classy.

Thanks Bill, Bear, and NASA for a lifetime of good memories.

  • @TheDuaneletourneau Yeah, I thought I recognized that from BSG!

And I love how Shatner says, "...but impassioned fans of a particular long-cancelled television series called... Star Trek..."

And I somehow never knew that Enterprise was originally named Constitution. That kinda fits, since the Starship Enterprise was a Constitution-class Heavy Cruiser!

  • I don't know how anyone can watch this without getting emotional.

  • @cycotron agree

  • Excellent.

  • Remember staying up late into the morning to watch this live. It was totally worth every minute of it. Thanks so much for producing it NASA and allowing it to be freely watchable over here. Wish Atlantis a safe trip and thanks for such an exhilarating and exciting program. Please get back to manned exploration as soon as possible. In the meantime we still have the probes and those cute little rovers :-D

  • As I wrote this comment, there is still one shuttle to be fly. Years from now, I am sure we could look back with nostalgia and wish we were now or before.

  • In Spanish Please! En Español por favor! Hay muchos que les gustaría saber lo que dicen! Subtítulos!

  • Absolutely friggin awesome!, farewell to the space shuttle, but now it's time to move on to NEW and EXCITING things!, you will be missed dearly by many, but never forgotten.

So long live, the space genius' NASA!, making the future that much more brighter for us, human beings.

  • Cried a little. I grew up with the space shuttle. I feel like a family member has died.

  • @erfmufn You're totally correct..

  • This is a truly awesome tribute to all 6 Space Shuttles (Enterprise, Columbia, Challenger, Endeavor, Discovery and Atlantis) and their combined legacy SO FAR. I also think that they will do an excellent job with their next missions, Long Duration Education Missions (or Flights, if you prefer), and are powerful research tools for generations to view, to study, be inspired by, and build on the foundation they have laid.

  • @dwgustaf More like long duration inspiration missions. I feel so gifted to be born in such an incredible time to experience such revolutionary transitions. It is my goal to visit each of the remaining shuttles when they are decommissioned and put on display. I hope I can aspire to the greatness these amazing people have striven for. I wish for the day to come when their efforts can be realized in commercial space flights and eventually missions to other worlds once more.

  • Amazing.... absolutely amazing.

  • Beautiful. It saddens me to see the dark times that NASA is currently going through. I'll miss working there and I hope to someday return.

  • @humancar2n Thank you for your service and helping us to shoot for the stars and reach the moon. Literally. The debt our nation owes, words cannot express. We must work together and always look past today and tomorrow...towards the future.

  • @humancar2n : we americans will miss you and your hard work. NASA should not be in this posiiton. It is a national Disgrace. disgusting.

  • @humancar2n I feel for all the people who will lose their jobs. I think you guys are real heroes, you make it happen. Well done to the many thousands who contributed to the shuttle programme.

What was your role at NASA and how long were you there? Thanks.

    regards from Melbourne, Australia.

  • @miles2057 I was there for 4 years as an engineer. My last day was July 20th. I tried planning it so my last day would be the day Atlantis landed but they extended the mission by a day. Oh well, at least I got to be around for the last launch ever, that was really special.

  • @humancar2n So you worked at the Cape? I envy you. I don't have any real qualifications but I would have been so happy if Only I could have worked as a fork lift driver or a storeman at NASA, just to be a part of something great!

What are a lot of the people going to do now that they have lost their jobs? I'm guessing NASA have people to help you all get new jobs? You should be proud, mate. Cheers from Melbourne, Australia.

  • @miles2057 I worked at Johnson Space Center, and it was pretty amazing. I have moved on to a new company and a new city. I have some friends that are still looking for jobs. The state government opened up an employment office to try and help people get jobs and training to make them more marketable. I left on my own terms to save a job for someone who didn't want to or couldn't relocate. I will always be proud to have been a small part of this beautiful thing called NASA. Cheers from Texas

  • I just watched the whole video...and I am glad I did! It was amazing, definitley worth watching!

  • HEY!! I've got an idea, let's not start off a video about science and space exploration with quotes from a religious nutjob who vehemently opposed evolution as a fraud. I think that is an EXCELLENT idea. The statements may be true, but his voice of religious ignorance should now be silent in death.

  • Air it in 30 years on the History channel

  • what a fine piece of engineering and human effort, im really sad that this program has come to an end, I grew up watching and admiring how enourmous this things were yet they flew into space and complete their missions almost flawlessly. I hope that the next spacecraft nasa builds is as spectacular and marvelous as the space shuttle and I cant wait to see the lunch next friday it will be very emotional to watch that pure power display for one last time...

  • what a great documentary, thank you so much for this!

  • Wow, worthy of spamming all of your friends with a link to this video. Why doesn't Capt Kirk narrate more? He has an outstanding voice!

  • anybody know the name of the song at around the half hour mark?

  • @TaxEvasion yep: E.S. Posthumus - Nara (Cold Case Theme)

  • Awesome documentary. The first time in history of NASA that this agency goes backward instead of advancing. Space Shuttle for ever!

  • FANTASTIC!! Sadly i can't watch the launch live because i have golf!! Im really mad! :(

  • Fabulous !! Thank you!!!

  • I grew up with the Space Shuttle and I will miss it dearly, but I have come to realize that it is only an orbiter and we must move on to the next technology that will take us beyond low Earth orbit. NASA can now focus 100% of its resouces on new projects that will take us to the Moon, Mars, and beyond.

I, for one, cannot wait to see HD video from the surface of the Moon.

  • This is the most remarkable, informative, and awe inspiring video on YouTube!

  • Finally!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • one day after STS-135 they'll use the space shuttle again and moddifie it to go to mars

  • @Alexander19851 no go. those birds will not fly again is safer to build new much more advanced space ship from scratch purpose built for long missions (Mars) maybe even in space so astronauts leave earth on rocket get in to a ship and fly there but it's my imagination gone wild. shuttles are just shuttles made to transport people and cargo to a space station.

  • Thank you for sharing this! It is sad to see the Shuttle program cancelled and the fleet retired, but bigger and better things await us in space and I'm excited to see what NASA can do to bring those discoveries to us here on Earth.

  • Beautiful Documentary, I've learned so much. Thank You very much for the upload. "Space can unite". That's my favourite quote.

  • Go mine the asteroid belt for rare metals and then they will suddenly be your best bud.

  • This is all cute and cuddly but what comes next? Do you guys have something better than the Shuttle? I mean, 30 years have passed, there should have been some progress made by now.

  • @imarchello Allegedly, they're pushing for deep space rather than near-Earth. Heavy lift rockets are in development for long term projects such as asteroid exploration (prospecting maybe?) and eventually a permanent Mars base.

The onus for shuttle development is being kicked over to corporations, and a few companies have viable designs. Shuttles will hopefully be contracted out for ISS ferrying and some EVAs, as well as used for private enterprises such as space tourism.

  • Thank you for uploading this - I've been waiting anxiously since I'm from the UK.
