  • It's hard to even comprehend how much energy, skill and compassion he put into every note he played.

  • one of my favorite songs! thanks for sharing!

  • I here by claim Jerry Garcia the Godfather of Rock N Roll. I had to hear Loser this morning for reasons I am ashamed to say, but any how, love the sound quality on this video. Thank you so much for making my day.

  • THE best Dead song EVER!!!!

  • Oh Yeah... how i miss Jerry!!

  • THE GREATEST< ROCKENIST< HEAVY METAL VERSION

  • So f***ing epic!!

  • Sweet Suzy....

  • remember it like it was yesterday....what a great leader of the band....

  • Sync the video and

  • ALSO iirc the style of his guitar is called a "warlock" hehe :D

  • @universalsingularity The Dead were called "The Warlocks" for about 5 minutes before they started using the name The Grateful Dead. BC Rich manufactures a model of guitar called a Warlock which is maybe, if you squinted real hard from about a mile away, similar to the body shape of the Tiger and subsequent similarly styled guitars, built by Doug Irwin and Steve Cripes. This style is not really "called" anything that I am aware of.

  • This is one of the most emotional and powerful versions of any song I've ever heard. People want to quibble over the solo, and I agree it gets slightly discombobulated in there somewhere (I don't think it's Jerry), but that really doesn't lessen the impact at all.

  • it amazes me still how so much emotion can come from one guy just standing there in a black t shirt hardly moving..... Great version thank you so much for the upload.... RIP jerry....

  • Great version!!!!!

    Also, DMB is lame.

  • NO ONE LOSES WITH JESUS. AMEN, ASK JERRY.

  • briandrum1 sucks at music haha

  • @arz703 good one!! dolt

  • Interesting little argument we have going on here...for what it's worth I think that no, DMB is definitely not anything close to the greatness of the dead. But, I will say, they're pretty good at times. Two step, warehouse, they have a good watchtower cover...And Phish is great.

Anyways, nothing will ever compare to the Dead so we'll just have to deal with what we got. I can tell the queen of diamonds by the way she shines...oh beautiful!!

  • sure there are other bands out there and most of them are pretty good... DMB is not one of these.

  • Jerry was, and still is, one of the most underrated guitarists of all time.

This man was an incredible guitarist,

  • My first show :).

  • @MrTommyh24

No wonder I love playing poker, and watching westerns.

  • Put your gold money where your love is baby!!!! they were on such a tear at this point in time it was awesome

  • Amazing!!

  • heard this exact one on gdradio.net today.. good enough to make me look it up tonight!!

  • All the versions from 71 i think blow these outta the water, but these r still great versions.....

  • This entire tour was Smokin - ie the base of Without a Net. As for the best Loser ever, it's good, but doesn't compare to 7/22/84 in Ventura. This is one of my favs and the version in Ventura shipped me to another universe :D

  • Great show. The City was good to us.

  • WOW

  • amazing :'|

  • There are great jam bands out there. No one will replace Grateful Dead, no one will replace Phish, and for that matter, no one will replace Dave Matthews. Peace

  • no doubt bro see that balloon to the right of jerry when the vid starts thats from me and my friends ! we made those stickers that were circulating around . if you get confused listen to the music play with calvin and hobbs on them .

  • my fav song

  • Bless you Jerry.....

  • Great

  • i LOVE YOU JERRY ONE OF THE BEST LOSERS I EVER DID SO!!!!!!!!!

  • Cool version. Maybe don't need almost 2 minutes of nothing before the song, but cool none the less.

  • @thomnak it´s a dead thing, i can´t tell if you need it, you should simply love it.

    It´s part of the show

  • i see all this talk about how this song was played this particular night, all the shows ive been to ive never broke it down once,i grabbed my seat in the back up top and held on for my ride.(or journey perse)can always find versions of songs that r better in places for instace his solo at cornell77 w/all harmonics, enjoy it for wat it is all just another note

  • It's powerful to hear this song from the perspective of a man who gained so much and then lost so much from the illicit elements of his lifestyle.

  • chills.....

  • Ridiculous that this wasn't on Dozin' At the Knick. Instead we get a weak version of Row Jimmy and stuff like Walkin' Blues.

  • @Twotontessie IMO the version of Row Jimmy on there is incredible, my favorite performance from that show

  • jerry in his prime oh yeah

  • @morningdewd1953 I would dispute that... Definitely an opinion though, and I respect that. I would say his prime (and the rest of the band's for that matter) was '73. Great day for him though... Great version.

  • also, great example of Brent's massive hammond work....

made it so difficult to transition to Vince's cheezy $49 toy Casio keys sound..

  • This is great, thanks for uploading. Better sound than the only recording I've heard of this legendary version of this tune. I love the way Jerry departs from the norm in the solo and really reaches for it...

However, Ventura '84 remains my favorite -- check it out, esp the solo and Jerry's vocal coming out of it. Cheers.

  • " A musicians musician" my spirit soars. the best looser. solost.martin

  • heavy metal jerry

  • beautiful

  • damn, miss that man. miss that band...

    thanks for posting this!!

  • I think the "mistakes" are there to help make this truly great imo. Its human, fragile and powerful, all so very real and improvised moment to moment, day to day.

  • Darkstars right! Not haters to notice truth. HUGE Jerry fan here! Started seeing Dead in 72, still going strong with Furthur. Love all things Jerry & guitar player for 35 years, heard it too. I would bet Jerry would laugh & say, "Yup, that puppy got away from me there". It happens! We played this song last night & it's easy to loose your place while playing. I was AT Englishtown too. Best loser ever? You need to listen to a LOT more Dead! Did I still enjoy it? Sure, Jerry is playing isn't he?

  • If a man among you has no sin upon his hands

Let him cast a stone at me for playing in the band.

I dont know who you are to judge the playing of a song Im sure you dont have the capacity to create...unless you are Bob Dylan or some other rock icon.

And the fact of you guys bickering back and forth over another man's art..is shameful in my opinion and one of the behaviors that led to the end of the sanctuary that was our scene.

Jerry played that song, that night exactly the way he wanted to.

  • I agree this is a great solo--And I know "how to listen, and not just hear (darkstar1972)." There are some moments where its a bit rushed, but that doesnt bother me in the least as a listener or a critic. Although I dont think it's as brilliant as the ones from Englishtown '77 or The Capitol Theater Pasaic NJ 11-24-78.

  • ok so im not the only one with a discriminating ear, but hey i will always love em!!

  • @jablonius&briandrum: The only reason I posted these posts is because you 2 accused me of not knowing what I'm talking about. I gave you the exact moments where the mistakes and rushes occur. I am not posting this to criticize Jerry. I know he made mistakes, and I've never cared. I am not going to get into a ridiculous argument over this. In my opinion, this is not his best Loser solo. You can disagree with me, but there's no need to say that I don't know what I'm talking about; it's offensive.

  • I agree to a certain extent Dark Star, but isnt this Improvisation at its best not knowing where the next note might be. Jerry took alot of risks on stage , and when they paid off it was magical. Sometimes they werent always clean , but you give him that, beacuse thats what his style was. So who cares its a great song , good version , and the vocals are sweet.

  • @darkstar1972 The songs about off days no. Great view of Jerry

  • @jablonius + briandrum:

from 7:15-19 he is actually extending the bridge further than it is supposed to be. The bridge should have ended and they should have begun singing "Last bad deal.." at 7:15.

Look, I love Jerry and have been a huge fan for decades. I am not a hater, and I am not a troll who wants to play devil's advocate for the sake of disagreeing with the large crowd.

I am a musician. I have listened to this closely 100s of times.

  • Darkstar1972, you have no idea what you're talking about...this is perhaps THE best version of Loser EVER...and 20 years later I still have no idea how it didn't make it onto Dozin at the Knick! I'd venture to say this is one of the best first set songs they played all YEAR...and I've heard almost every show from 1990...

  • @jablonius + briandrum:

6:16 he plays 1-2 wrong notes, which messes him up

6:18-19 he begins that phrase too early, which is not on par with the band

6:27-28 plays another wrong note while climbing up, which messes up his stride

6:54 goes into the next phrase too soon

6:58-7:01 this phrase is played way too fast and it messes up his position

7:01-04 because of his prior messup, this phrase is very messy, as he tries to get back to normal

7:07 gets back to the correct position

    7:11 rushes again

  • @darkstar1972

I just listened very intently to the entire solo to check your "notes", and have to say, I still think you're wrong. I'm sorry if you think I'm trying or was trying to offend you, but I've been a drummer for 26 years, and been playing in bands for 21....Not only are his "wrong notes" not wrong, but you said you're a guitarist, right? Not trying to offend you, but do you have any music theory background? Those "wrong notes" fit perfectly w/ the music! The last part where you...

  • Comment removed

  • @briandrum1 I've been a drummer since 1983, so yep, I know a little something about music and timing. I never said I was a guitarist. I don't remember what I posted long ago, but I stand by my words that Jerry is rushing it. If you can't tell that he comes in too early precisely at the 6:18 mark, then there is nothing else I can say to you, no offense. By the way, he starts his solo on the 4, not the 1. The 5:59 point is on the 4.

  • @darkstar1972 Given that he is playing on the 1, and it is clearly the end of a phrase, I'd say he finishes late rather than starts early. The next phrase starts on 2.

  • @darkstar1972 ....thought he was rushing? I cannot for the life of me hear where you're coming from! He starts the phrase w/ 16th notes on the 1, and ends the phrase w/ 16th notes on the 4....with the entire band. I guess we can just agree to disagree...even though you're wrong! :-)~ peace

  • Comment removed

  • @darkstar1972 @darkstar1972 Well, then you're a fellow drummer. I'll take back what I was saying to myself while I was writing my earlier comments. :-) And yes, I do hear what you're saying that you think he comes in too early in 3 different spots, but...and this is a BIG but, you do realize this is the Grateful Dead? When it comes to playing Grateful Dead music, all bets are off......

  • @briandrum1 Other than 6:18, 6:55 and 7:01 are too early. Look, Loser is one of my favorite songs because Jerry kicked in some serious soul in his singing and his piercing solos. This is a very passionate solo, and I like it a lot. The point I made in my post(s) from way back when was that this is not "the best" Loser; there are better versions out there. The evidence I gave was that he was rushing as the passion ran through his vains. I think everyone loves how he played many notes fast here.

  • RIP Jerry peace man!

  • skip ahead.....song starts around 1:45

  • I don't understand what all the fuss about this solo is, because this solo is not the best, nor anywhere close to Jerry's best Loser solo. If you know how to listen, not just hear, then you can hear that Jerry messed up all over the place. He was light-years ahead of the band and just played way too fast. He probably got an adrenaline boost and could not hear the band, but he was not in sync with them the whole time. This solo is just fast and loud, and that makes people assume it's great.

  • @darkstar1972 you have NO idea what you're talking about! That entire solo was on point w/ everything else the rest of the band was playing....sure it was a loud solo, but they went into it blaring on all cylinders...

  • IMHO, every show was a great one in it's own way, and I never was one to compare versions of songs. However, this is one of my favorite songs sung by Jerry, and I would have to say that the Englishtown, NJ show was the best version of this song I personally had ever seen and heard. Like I stated, EVERY show was a happening to me, but the version of "Loser" at Englishtown, NJ was killer.. Thanks for posting this one. I was not there, and I know sometimes being there makes a difference, Peace

  • @jmarlo

    @deadheadable

Btw, how hard is to spell Warren's last name? It is H-A-Y-N-E-S. Surely you both can do it.

  • I ran into Phil Friday and Warren is Hanes-been! Catching Melvin Saturday!

  • @jmarlo

    @deadheadable

I don't much care for the way Warren interprets Jerry (he was NEVER that into the Dead) either but all around Warren is a much better guitarist - lead (his lead playing approaches Hendrix/Zappa level), rhythm, slide, acoustic, etc. His voice is CONSISTENTLY amazing every night (Jerry's voice in the end was not) as is his songwriting. In short, Warren's bands don't have "off nights," Jerry's bands had more off than on nights in the end. I was there-it was awful. Flame away

  • fantastic garcia solo. F Hayenes, F Chimenti

  • SWEET SUZIE !!

*God* What an *awesome* solo !

We miss you SO much, Jerry....

  • Warren Hanes is and never should be associated with the "boys" give me a f......break

  • Great version - check out 7-22-84 as well. I would say they both have their "best" elements.

  • awesome solo from jerry

  • Really good rendition of Loser by The Dead at the Denver show in May. Warren Haynes more than held his own, and an incredible piano solo by Jeff Chimenti.

  • Best Loser EVER!!

  • MY FIRST LOSER...

  • Like I said about the peggy o I watched earlier....1984 Binghamton kills this version........scorching hot!!....I have come to realize that the 84 Binghamton show was killer at times,........and I missed it even though I live here!!......

  • Wow Jerry tore it up. Great find and thanks to the poster. One of my favorite songs and this is the best I have heard.

  • wow...he almost loses phil for a secondright around 7:00 .......he realy went off!!!!

  • The best version of "Loser" EVER!!!! Bar none!!!!

(Why the F didn't they put this on 'Dozin' @ The Knick???')

  • come to daddy

  • brent!!!

  • best loser ever.

  • Thank you for posting this; I really enjoyed this.

  • Jerry is RAGING the solo on this one. VERY NICE!

  • Gives me goosebumps.

  • Too bad the sound is out-of-sync. Great version, though; thanks for posting.

  • I don't agree. The sound seems right to me.

  • An absolutely awesome Loser.

    Thanks for posting this.

    Spring/Summer 90 FTMFW!

  • 6:14 Jerry looks across stage, then he and Phil ride a lick note for note. Yow! They hit it a couple more times... So grateful I tuned in to GD in time. First show was Spring '87, and caught 15 total + 1 The Dead. Still looking for new bands who have anywhere near this amount of soul, diversity, creativity and fun. Your suggestions are welcome.

  • You won't find any. Keep looking.

  • Comment removed

  • I listened to a few jam bands here and there. Not really anything great out there. Phish is way over rated. Back in 95 the critics were sayin Phish would be the next Dead. Not even close. Back to my point, I've been listening to alot of Dave Matthews. No comparison to Jerry and the boys but very good on the ears and very diversified.

  • @gam44es with all due respect, you don't have a clue about what your talkin' about

  • @gam44es

Phish vs. The Grateful Dead is really just an Apples vs. Oranges argument.

  • @gam44es - you don't know much about music do you?

  • @creepytrunkman51 must know a little more than you. i also know that you are an asshole for saying something like that.

  • @gam44es comparing dave matthews band to the grateful dead and phish? dave matthews is nothing more than a bunch of talented musicians getting together and making mediocre music for people who want to know what they are going to hear.

  • @gam44es are you trying to tell me that dave matthews band is more talented than the grateful dead or phish? come on. DMB is full of talented msuician's, but the music they make is generally mediocre and all their songs fit a formula. Plus, DMB is for bro's.

  • @creepytrunkman51 in my comment i said dmb is no comparison to the dead. i personally think phish is overrated. i own a few phish albums but happen to like dmb more. have you heard of the avett brothers? check em out.

  • @gam44es Phish is over rated? haha. Sorry you've never been to a phish show.

    signed,

Seen the Grateful Dead 200 times and Phish 150. You are missing out

  • @gam44es Phish is NOT way overrated. Phish NEVER wanted to be the next GD. They are more like Frank Zappa than the Dead The jam band scene is probably the most growing sector of music. I saw 100+ GD shows & @ least 25 Phish shows.

I would rather see Kenny G than Dave Matthews.

Dude, remove your head from your ass.

  • @phillinfree I would rather keep my head in my ass than listen to kenny g, thank you. What the hell is wrong with you? :)

  • @gam44es First and foremost, Phish is FAR from overrated! DMB? Really? I went to 1 show...and that will be the LAST time I ever go to a DMB show. When these so called critics were saying that Phish would be the next Grateful Dead, they were talking about crowd/following, and if you honestly think that DMB's fans are even remotely the same as Dead fans, you're sorely mistaken. Phish fans = 95% are chill, kind peeps, DMB fans = 95% drunk, out of control, dolt's.

  • @briandrum1 Why are we talking about Phish and DMB here?

  • @briandrum1 I would offer that the Phish Fans I know are the biggest druggies I have ever seen.

That said, Dave Mathews had one good album and then he got rid of everything that made it worth while... why we are talking about Phish and DMB on a video of Loser is beyond me.... we must have no chance of losing

  • @briandrum1 whats a dolt?

  • @benjaminpwallen someone that is clueless and/or someone that asks a question that could easily be answered by doing a quick google search. An example of someone that may be a dolt; "whats a dolt?" ;-) j/k

  • @briandrum1 wow. You are "that guy" for sure. While I have said that to co-workers, what if others had the same thought but too pussy to comment?

  • @benjaminpwallen What are you talking about?

  • @briandrum1 They are called BROS my good man heh

  • @briandrum1 phish is severely overrated the members are fuckin crooks and fuck dmb

  • @niggafatman They're crooks? Yea, they steal my energy when I'm at their shows, but you know what? I steal there's as well...it's a give and take kinda stealing... so it's all good!

  • @briandrum1 phish should stick to nursery rhyms thier music is corny and the lyrics are childish[ex. the wheels are the things that make contact with the road<- no shit], if you want to talk them up do it on a phish video. don't spoil this video with garbage. this is still a great song, definately a good version

  • @TheHopebus Any deadhead knows that lyrics don't mean $#!+. It's ALL about the jam. Jerry himself recognized this and said just as much. I'm a deadhead til the grave but Phish deserve some respect. They do their thing in the same tradition as the dead, and they do their thing well. Whether you like the Dead more than Phish or not, both talents should be acknowledge for what they are. There should be no room for hate on either side

  • @SpacinCasen are you really trying to say robert hunter's poetry doesn't mean SHIT to any deadhead? bullshit dude..

  • Comment removed

  • @briandrum1 You are exactly right... Phish was only the child of the Dead in terms of the type of following, not really the music. Dead = old blues. Phish = early Genesis prog rock. Both are amazing, but not similar really.

  • @gam44es 1st off dave matthews is not a jamband. they had a few songs i like in the early 90s when i was 12 and thats it. and 2nd is self explaintory. MOE.! u want to see a some good live music theses days at a good price moe. is it.

  • @gam44es you're out of your mind, dave matthews and others like hootie and the blowfish are just fall-flat lame. Phish does some diverse an inspiring things, and deserves placement above pop-hippie boring bands like DMB. I miss Jerry like we all do!

  • @hippie430 dmb is awesome, quite diversified, and has jam qualities too. they are different and reach a wider audience but doesnt make em suck. of course jerry and trey are the greatest and will always be the best but there are other bands out there

  • such a good version, jerrys on firah

  • "Come to Daddy on an inside straight...." Its been 14 years my brother, and I miss you everyday.

  • @HippieBuddah - AMEN!!!!!!!

  • @HippieBuddah I knew he was family the first time I cried at a show.....miss you JG

  • @HippieBuddah: Well, I got no chance of losin' this time...."

  • everybodys bragging and drinkin' thazt wine!!!!!!!!!

  • right on brother

  • Not only is this one of the best losers ever, it is clearly one of Jerry' HOTTEST guitar solos, I don't know what was going on up there that night, but I like it!

  • That is so "right on!" I've been listening to the Dead since the late 80's and this version was 'bar none' the best ever!! What were they thinking NOT putting it on the "Dozin @ The Knick" CD??? Nice call!!

  • Weir did a fantastic job on that.

  • this was a fantastic tailend of spring tour closer for me .... after the Landover shows we didnt think they'd be able to trump ... but all the way from Hartford into Ontario and then down into Albany they came out and played in fricking SPADES !!!!! Pulling off one of the greatest runs in my opinion since FALL of 73 Winterland !

  • Sweet Susie!!!

  • I wasn't at Cornell but saw many a show in 77 in The Bay Area. Also saw two of the shows in 75. One was Snack Sunday Kezar Stadium SF and Speedway Meadow Golden Gate Park. It's

  • you didnt happen to catch 6/09/77 at winterland did you? one of my all time favorites

  • The 80s have it: no Hammond organ in 70s losers, a feature that now seems necessary to the haunting power of the tune.

  • Very haunting.

  • xtremenortherner....I couldn't say it better.....noodling, tuning, riffing, bangin' and stepping on it. Wouldn't trade it for anything.

  • my fave for " loser-" Love how jerry channels some of the bums he and hunter knew in the day on market st -- "got nochance of losin this time' watch Jerrty's face- he's really therre ,man

  • Fuuuuuuck! Amazing.

  • Watching this brings a "speck" in my eye,I still miss Jerry & watching the Grateful Dead perform, their every show unique from the ones before or after....,also I'd almost forgotten, all of the damn noodling, tuning, riffing,& bangin' around between songs...,criminy!...,step on it guys!!

  • one of my favourite Knickerbockers

  • BTW, thanks for this SpottheLooney

  • Very nice. The solo in Dick's Picks 10 from '77 is much more gripping, striking, etc to me though. The difference is probably in the different guitar models/settings more than anything.

  • great song, c u heads at rosemont in less then a month

  • great dead songs make u cry.. i think we all know that

  • absolutely. Jerry's solo's bring pure euphoria.

  • The best Loser ever everyone knows was from 5/8/77 It's what legends are made of.

  • i cant say as i wasnt there. this made legends of them for me. if you were at the 77 show then thats ur call with "everyone". i as part of "everyone" will respectfully disagree with you.

  • i'm sorry but no dead shows can compare to most shows form '77-'78, regardless of whether you were there or not, especially May 7, 8, and 9 of 1977.

  • Oh my god yeah! Cornel university. Nothing in the world compares. That Morning Dew is in a league of it's own.

  • HELL YEA! Right on dude, that's my absolute favorite loser EVER!!!!! Love It. Not to mention Scarlet>Fire and St. Stephen>Not Fade Away>St. Stephen>Morning Dew. Amazing Show.

Barton Hall, Cornell University Ithaca, NY - 05-08-1977

  • damn good, but the dead are the dead...I'm sure we all agree every era has it's kick-ass distinctive sound... and is good for it's own reasons...anyhow...nothin' for the head like the good ol' Grateful Dead!!!

    cheers

  • Yes yes yes, Barton hall my friend

  • I would, in fact, emphatically disagree with this statement. Cornell is a wonderful show, but not every version of every song played there was the best ever. And while the Loser from Cornell is "good," it doesn't rate in the best ever discussion. IMHO, of course.

  • awesome

    I'm in tears

  • I always loved the between song noises the band did. Kind of getting the sound for the song, or warming up the riffs. The way they get the croud going by doing that. In this video you can see how they take just long enough to get the crowd hollering and screaming. This version is just amazing! Thanks for the post.

  • dont get all upset, but check out Max Creek 6/11/88 on archive... maybe you'll hear BK3 play in a town near you.

  • great tune maybe if you ask nicely, BK3 will play in a town near you (replace spaces with periods) ... archive org/details/mc1988-06-11 edited flac16

  • great loser, the whole song is great but after the jam the Jerry licks between words. last fair deal in the country. (lick) last fair deal in this town. (lick) these little moments like that are what left imprints on my soul. beautiful stuff.
