Shoujo Kakumei Utena can very from gernes however It can fit in the magical girl one, due to the fact as SouroererZ said it has many Maho shoujo elements to it ;3
I never watched Pretty Sammy because I thought I'd be like Tenshi Muyo, until I realized they are separate animes o.o I have the first manga of Mahou Tsukai Tai! but it's all in japanese, so I can't read it T-T the face of the main character of that anime makes me remember Ahiru's from Princess Tutu, I have yet to watch Shamanic Princess as well even though it's so short DX I completely agree about Utena being Mahou Shoujo~ I love the opening! <3
@YuriLucky11 I hesitated about adding it but after analyzing it it has most of the common elements of magical girls, like soe kind of magic or mystic power, a "transformation" sequence and all te mystic or magic elements about Dios and the revolution of the world adding the romance and drama, being Utena the heroine. It just takes a more mature and dramatic turn to the genre but it still has all that fantasy.
