they don't search every vehicle that enters the euro tunnel. there is no way i am going on this thing untill they thouroughly search each vehicle. thanks but no thanks
@1982FMJ er they do just not humans as u go past ur ticket booth head towards checkin and head towards douanne booth on under road is a long strip to video survalince ur vehicle so all is safe
Longest road tunnel is Laerdal in Norway @ 24,500 metres. St Gotthard is only 17,000. The Chunnel is 50,450. So what do ya do when there's a breakdown?
Add to that there would have to be a cross over mid way to change the vehicles from the left hand side to right and visa versa. Rail is better as British and Frecnh Railways both run on the left. Well french majoritibly on the left as the area around Strasbourg runs on the right becasue it used to belong to the Germans, who put running on the right.
if you drove though the tunnel, the Bus would put out toxic gases that would fill up the tunnel, to prevent it, you need alot of ventillation, which is very expensive, so a train is better
50km or roughly 35 miles. The gas alone wouldn't make it worth it. Plus your driving in a tunnel for 35 miles. Then there's accidents, running out of gas, other roadside assistance, plus all that exhaust would be ridiculous. 20km isn't that bad but 50 would be too long to realistically expect smooth operation
U Cant Drive Through cause there's no way the exhaust from the bus could exit the tunnel and let fresh air in, so you would probably die on your way over causing a huge traffic jam.
@afoot85 50km is closer to 30 miles mate..

yes, they will need some underground motorway services
beansterman1998 2 years ago
Why?
1. Train is faster, safer and more reliable;
2. Cars, trucks and buses would create to much toxic gas which would be difficult to get rid of;
3. Accidents would be far more frequent and there would be no easy means of eascape, especially in the event of a fire;
4. The tunnel would have to be much wider to accommodate at least two lanes + emergency lane so much more expensive;
5. Driver mesmerism becomes a factor.
Rail was the only realistic solution.
Camerameister 2 years ago 22
also the highspeed train Eurostar uses the tunnel thus more tubes would be necessary.
czechguy78 2 years ago
That's why it is train only.

well its cos you cant drive the bus on rail tracks, an the train does 100mph so it would crash into you as well .

how long is this fuckin tunnel? anyways.. if they can make a 20 km tunnel under a mountain in switzerland they can make a tunnel under the sea..
they should have made it bigger and drive through.. fuck the train!

i see your point but trains are cleaner in the tunnel and of course they also make more money coz they cant have a 45pound toll both at the entrance

You can't drive through the tunnel cause, the exhaust from the bus's diesel engine would kill you

i wish that happens to you. actually i dont.
