First time I heard this, I was in a club. I just heard Erykah's voice singing Shangalang-shang...and I said "Damn, this reminds me of the old deep south blues"...I didn't hear the lyrics. A few weeks later I found out it was called Southern Gul and I thought, mmm I was right! Check out Miles Davis' 'Jean Pierre' to hear that same connection.

i remember driving down Beechnut (Houston, TX) blasting this in my 96 Ford Escort named Maxine the Maverick. I love the south & the 2 piece & a pepper!
I plan on Moving to Dallas soon just because the people there have a certain flavor. They are classy country. For example: You will find black business owners that are successful but you wouldn't know it because they are subtle and not extremely flamboyant, just country cool. In Houston, you may find alot of want to be business owners that are trying but could learn alot from the people of Dallas. I lived there, then moved to Houston, now I know I would choose Dallas any day!

this is dallas she's talking about. .....Ive experienced dallast, tx. people are simple mnd and country. she's the opposite of what she's talkn about.....on another level. I met her before
Dont know if i should just mention this, but she is from D-town. That is very southern. I've heard gul. its an (R) in there but if said the way its said here its really smooth and you might not hear it when its first spoken. Maybe if its requested enough ill record it and put it up.
I'm in NC and I haven't heard anyone say "gul" and actually be serious -- most of the time they're making fun of the "country bumpkins" located in the more rural areas of NC. My city, Charlotte, is a little more urban, so we don't say that.
damn I remember this joint, I wasliving in North Carolina, them southern mofuckas really say Gul. That accent is sexi as hell tho... This shit came on Power 98 all the time lol
Man this is one of the hottest tracks that Erykah has ever been on! It still amazes me that this track didn't blow the charts up and kinda remained underground.
If Erykah Badu isn't magic... To grow up in Texas as a black women with the generations history there you know she's had to handle great negativity Hassle like that can either break you or make you and she is so strong with LOVE as her armours if any one knows the fine line between love and hate she does check out 'ancestry in progress'. Cheers
They both used it... Erykah Badu sold it as a CD Single (Erykah Badu featuring Rahzel) and Rahzel used the track on his Album - Make The Music 2000... Artist do that from time to time... ex. Jay-Z & Jermaine Dupri - "Money Ain't A Thing" -- They both used the track on each others Albums.
Yeah, I try to put up underground remixes that are hard to find and/or people may of not heard before... Just click on my name to go to my YouTube Site and you may come across some other R&B and rap/hip-hop songs that you've never heard before...
all the songs on that cd "make the music 200" are pretty sick ... plus its the cd with the famous "4 elements" with kenny muhammad and "if your mother only knew" tracks on it ... they are hidden tracks
Clever lyrics. She repping Dallas hard. Badu and Rahzel are the truth.
