It's funny - I forgot until hearing their rant against theater owners that, back then, there were no theater "Mega-Plexes" - Your local theater had 2 to 4 screens and the theater manager had to pick which movie to show each week or month. So, in light of that, it does make sense to hold the theater owners "responsible" for which movies show, since they couldn't show them all.
Jaws 3-D wasn't really that bad i mean sure was it stupid and not at all logical? yes and were the effects cheesy as hell? yes but does it entertain? yes, it atleast provides a new atmosphere, fair acting and the shark actually causes some mayhem in cool places, was it great? no, does it match up to the original? not at all, but if you like goofy monster movies its actually pretty enjoyable and it pretty much looks like gold next to the revenge.
@ Description: The Empire Strikes Back, The Wrath of Kahn, Aliens, Day of the Dead, Jaws: The Revenge, etc., etc... I'm kidding about Jaws: The Revenge, but seriously. That movie is a masterpiece. Actually, I'm seriously kidding: It's a crapsterpiece!
Stinker is the name for Roger Ebert...a hidieously ugly failed screenplay writer who is now rotting out from cancer while she is still alive. Still trying to get publicity by kicking a dead man before his family can bury him, Ebert was an alcoholic herself. Soon his hired wife will have the money!

This is quite an entertaining bit. And it brings an odd fact. Ebert said the 3-D fever was big in the 1950's and then disappeared for 20 years before resurfacing, or maybe 30 since this is the 80's. And 20-30 years after this look whats happening, another 3-D fad, perhaps its every 20-30 years.
I agree about Porkys 2. Infact i hate those movies. They aren´t funny at all, and the characters are a total bore. Just to compare, i know that Siskel & Ebert didn´t like the Police Academy movies but they were fun, and had likeable characters.
great to see that this 3d bullshit was dumb back then and will always be. Make better movies and fuck 3d man... i don't give a shit if Avatar was in 3D - the plot SUCKED ASS!!!

My guess is that people don't like to feel emotion anymore since they think stuff like that in movies are considered "gay", even though movies like Blade runner debunk idiotic theories like those.
It's pretty obvious that's a super fake shark fin at 3:02, correct me if I'm wrong but with the fin behind about 1 inch behind the skiers, wouldn't that mean that the front of the shark would be directly under their skiboards? I mean the fin of a shark is in about the middle of the shark's body, so they were skiing right on top of the shark!!
I recall a world where sequels were rare and even looked down upon, wasn't really until Batman returns, atleast in my mind, when that tide changed, anyone remember anything older then that?
i saw every 3D movie in 83. At the time I thought they were kinda cool but I was always expecting more to jump out at me then what ended up happening. The best 3D movie from that time was Friday the 13th Pt. 3. I remember seeing SpaceHunter and MetalStorm also that year

@Skulldini Unfortunately I didn't see any of those. I do remember them advertised. I think "comin Atcha" was sued by Spielberg for ripping off "Raiders of Lost Ark" ?? or maybe that "Treasures of 4 Crowns" I am thinking of...
i definatly think jaws 3 was over the top rediculous but i kindof cant help but love it cause i remember watching it when i was like 10 and thinking it was so cool how it took place at a park and being in 3-D the effects r awful but i think the shark and being in a park is just amazing
Yes, the 80s did produce a good sequel. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. Much better than the first Star Trek movie. Took a plot from TOS's Space Seed, frankly not a good episode, and made it gripping.
I stand corrected. Star Trek II is an excellent move. For that matter, Aliens, and Empire Strikes Back are also quality sequels from the eighties (how'd I miss those??).
@gradepoint Ghostbusters 2. I don't care what anyone says, I loved Ghostbusters 2. I thought it was almost as good as the original, but it was still great!
Also, Return of the Jedi, not as good as A New Hope or Empire Strikes Back, but still awesome.
And, Star Trek 3 & 4. Search for Spock was definitely gripping too, and The Voyage Home was both well acted and funny. Come on, it practically invented the catchphrase "Nuclear Wessels"!
@gradepoint don't forget about star trek III and iv, return of the Jedi, indiana jones and the temple of doom, indiana jones and the last crusade, Rocky III and IV also all the bond films that came out in the 80's.
Little could Gene and Roger know that 25 years after this show, that "sequel-mania" and "remake-mania" would be stronger then ever in Hollywood. And still with the same dismal results.
My friend, truer words were never spoken. Siskel has probably rolled over in his grave so many times since he died, he's corkscrewed himself into the core of the Earth...
Sequels should be made to movies with characters whom you'd expect to have continuing adventures: Charlie Chan, Tarzan, Superman, Batman, James Bond, Luke Skywalker, Indiana Jones, etc. Who the hell would expect the citizens of Amity to find themselves at the mercy of a series of super-killer sharks? We can suspend our disbelief the first time, but not two or three more times. Occasionally a totally unnecessary sequel like "Bride of Frankenstein" (1935) will turn out great. But that's very rare.
After a good 20 years, we brought back the gimmick of 3D in theaters again. I think it looks okay, but to have it with every single animated movie that comes out is getting pretty annoying.
i know, i preffered it only in live action movies where it really shows off like in MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D or THE FINAL DESTINATION 3D,not oscar winning titles but they where fun to watch.
Main reason is because they destroyed the tapes. Anything prior to 1986 when they went over to Siskel & Ebert & the Movies with Buena has been lost. The only surviving copies are from what people taped. Now, they could relase post 1986 on DVD, because Buena Vista did save the recordings. In fact all of the reviews at least are available to view right now on the At the Movies website (Google At the Movies).
@MrJtorg I wouldn't say they were legally obligated. I think they just felt that after awhile the tapes were of no further use, and they either decided to re-use the tapes to save money, or they just discarded them to make space.
@gradepoint Where can i possibly find episodes prior to 1986? Also, do you digitalize this? Why i'm asking this is because the video is of very good quality, considering this is from 1983.
The shark in "Jaws" looks pretty phony, too. But it's still an amazing movie (mostly because it's primarily about a) the fear of the shark and b) the interplay between Quint, Hooper, and Brody).
You dont like the Back To The Future Trilogy. I admit the Rocky & Elm Street series are an enquired taste. Like marmite you either love em our hate them. But I would of thought a fellow movie buff would have a grudging respect for the BTTF Trilogy
Yeah most sequels falls short in quality compared to the originals. But films like Rambo 2, Empire strikes back and allmost every single Friday the 13th movie surpasses the originals.
I love Gene's line at the beginning-"The theme is sequels. The theme is sequels.See,even less interesting the second time around". These two were awesome
jaws 3-d was a great movie i mean there r things in it that r stupid but i thaught it was still a good movie much better then the revenge but i mean yea its def not as good as 1 and 2 i still love it though
True true. And I still find it hard to believe how many 3D movies are being released today. Beowulf, Coraline, Up, My Bloody Valentine and last time I heard, Toy Story 3 will be in 3D too!
Roger has said himself that "3D Sucks!" lol he would rather watch 2D instead. I don't blame him really.
But the 3D"s have improved over the years. particulely the ones in IMAX. When Roger saw The Polar Express in that format he gave commented that the glasses that were use allowed him to fit his regular glasses and accually see the film.

Mikemaniax 1 year ago
@gradepoint don't forget about star trek III and iv, return of the Jedi, indiana jones and the temple of doom, indiana jones and the last crusade, Rocky III and IV also all the bond films that came out in the 80's.

Yeah, Aliens was from '86.

@frantic1971 Exactly what I was thinking

What a treat to be able to watch these episodes...Siskel & Ebert were a great team...Thanks for posting...
CW69Atlanta 2 years ago 13
Sequels should be made to movies with characters whom you'd expect to have continuing adventures: Charlie Chan, Tarzan, Superman, Batman, James Bond, Luke Skywalker, Indiana Jones, etc. Who the hell would expect the citizens of Amity to find themselves at the mercy of a series of super-killer sharks? We can suspend our disbelief the first time, but not two or three more times. Occasionally a totally unnecessary sequel like "Bride of Frankenstein" (1935) will turn out great. But that's very rare.

"Aliens" was a really good sequel from the 80s.

After a good 20 years, we brought back the gimmick of 3D in theaters again. I think it looks okay, but to have it with every single animated movie that comes out is getting pretty annoying.
kasrkinmullet 2 years ago 5
i know, i preffered it only in live action movies where it really shows off like in MY BLOODY VALENTINE 3D or THE FINAL DESTINATION 3D,not oscar winning titles but they where fun to watch.
murdlok 2 years ago
The 80s produced seven good sequels: Friday the 13th part 2, part 3, part 4, part 5, part 6, and part 7, and part 8.
allnaturalhemp 2 years ago
and Silent Night Deadly Night Part 2.
"Garbage Day!"
clashrogers 2 years ago 7
Oh, man, you are so right about that! Make that 8 good sequels!
allnaturalhemp 2 years ago
Why don't they produce DVDs of At the Movies? (That'd be a lot of DVDs, in any case.)
LeavesinTibet 2 years ago 5
Main reason is because they destroyed the tapes. Anything prior to 1986 when they went over to Siskel & Ebert & the Movies with Buena has been lost. The only surviving copies are from what people taped. Now, they could relase post 1986 on DVD, because Buena Vista did save the recordings. In fact all of the reviews at least are available to view right now on the At the Movies website (Google At the Movies).
gradepoint 2 years ago 3
Oh, that's a shame. Well thank you very much for posting these!
Rbatty2 2 years ago 3
@gradepoint well if all the reviews are on that site then that must mean some master copies are still floating around surely
YoJimBoHugabaJoe 1 year ago
Can't they record the entire thing?
i want the mad max review
juliusyeung0330 1 year ago
@gradepoint Wow, were they legally obligated to destroy the tapes or something? That's crazy!
MrJtorg 1 year ago
@MrJtorg I wouldn't say they were legally obligated. I think they just felt that after awhile the tapes were of no further use, and they either decided to re-use the tapes to save money, or they just discarded them to make space.
gradepoint 1 year ago
@gradepoint That's a damn shame. There's so many movies from back then that I was hoping to find 'at the movies' videos for. thanks for the info.
MrJtorg 1 year ago
@gradepoint Where can i possibly find episodes prior to 1986? Also, do you digitalize this? Why i'm asking this is because the video is of very good quality, considering this is from 1983.

The shark in "Jaws" looks pretty phony, too. But it's still an amazing movie (mostly because it's primarily about a) the fear of the shark and b) the interplay between Quint, Hooper, and Brody).
ord1711 2 years ago
Back To The Future Part 2 & 3, Rocky 3 & 4, Evil Dead 2, Nightmare On Elm Street Part 3 & Aliens. To name a few.
martinwilliamrandall 2 years ago
Only "Evil Dead 2" and "Aliens" are good movies on that list.
ord1711 2 years ago
You dont like the Back To The Future Trilogy. I admit the Rocky & Elm Street series are an enquired taste. Like marmite you either love em our hate them. But I would of thought a fellow movie buff would have a grudging respect for the BTTF Trilogy

Does the tail of the shark even move?
yak6ex 2 years ago
It looked damn fake. I didn't notice that when I was a little kid in the theater. The shark doesn't even ziz zag. He or she moves in a straight line.
yak6ex 2 years ago
i think back to the future II played on this. when the big shark "ate" marty he looks up and says "the shark still looks fake"

Yeah most sequels falls short in quality compared to the originals. But films like Rambo 2, Empire strikes back and allmost every single Friday the 13th movie surpasses the originals.

Cropsy25 2 years ago
Headbanger142 2 years ago
But the 3D"s have improved over the years. particulely the ones in IMAX. When Roger saw The Polar Express in that format he gave commented that the glasses that were use allowed him to fit his regular glasses and accually see the film.
