  • FYI, this Hospitaller is actually based on Roger, the Grandmaster of Knights Hospitaller at that time. You can tell that by his presence at the dinner and his trip to recruit knights.

  • a stock is like, the tree trunk, it's the main part of it, the part that if you're missing it the entirety falls apart

lock, stock and barrel means the whole of it, as taken from online etymology, apparently it's germanic even

so your danish teacher needs to learn to germanic apparently too :D

after all english takes much from nordic and germanic and latin and french and greek

  • My English teacher (i'm danish) corrected the quote "I put no stock in religion" as a mistake in my essay. FML i'm surrounded by retards

  • @LegoGenfilms you should tell him the origin of stocks in economics comes from the word stock that the guy in this clip says, it means validity, belief in, faith in, investment, betting on, any of that stuff that says if it fails you fail

  • One minor thing I don't get: was a stock market around in that time and place? Why would he say "I put no stock in religion" if they didn't have any stocks?

  • @cennon He did not mean stock in an economical sense.

  • I like this movie but I think that a fucking chimpanzee would've made a historically more accurate movie than this

  • @romanophile1 Why do you think that. Please give one example, I am really curious, thanks.

  • @romanophile1Perhaps historical accuracy was never the aim.For a religious official to speak this way would have been very postmodern for that time.It is even a postmodern idea today.I think they were very intentional about constructing it this way.I think they used the crusades as a backdrop that we all recognize to portray modern themes such as religious hipocracy and the idea that religion is not necessary to be a follower of God,as well as many other themes.Just a thought

  • @pedroelcavron Hmm yes it is true some people are hypocrites, or rather alot, but this movie is just really an expression of what western man thinks about christianity, but the christianity that developed in the west and especially in england where it was basically used by a rich oligarchy for there own "mammonistic" means, And also western man shouldn't be too fast to think that muslims follow this peaceful religion

  • @romanophile1 fair enough. I think its a good movie and I like the message he is trying to get across. I'm not overly fond of religion.

  • @pedroelcavron they did, but there ARE people that spoke out against fanaticism in medieval times, in that very same way actually

"I would give the devil the benefit of the law for my own sake" or something like that, in an english play, the fact that cromwell got rebuffed for his craziness, that would never happen if no one or no group of influence didn't share that belief

they just had to "codeword" it a little to some extent, religious discourse is political discourse in medieval times

  • @pedroelcavron and that's actually why secularism exists, to separate religion from politics in an official manner :)

harhar. the more you know, but that's no guarantee of good action, just a method of ensuring it is more likely to occur

  • @pedroelcavron oh and by the way, cults of personality, and radiant futures, are also included as "religions" by this definition, radiant future being communism's version of heaven, it has the same function, just a different form (name)

;) the patterns of behaviour are how you best tell, not the words they use, and that's what secularism is all about, or, maybe it's more specific than that, but that's what most secularists think like anyways, nazi ideology also counts as a religion under this

  • @pedroelcavron so, spirituality, is the part of religion that is, umm... well it's not spirituality in the sense that you believe in ghosts spirits, but a certain sense and feeling that people adore that is also in christianity, even if they're atheists

the reason people criticize the mainstream religions as atheists is because so many religious people are so bad and excuse it with the bible or something, you might think this is the baby with the bathwater, so, saladin, the blacksmith, etc etc

  • @pedroelcavron but at the same time, said feeling often makes you blind to the bad parts of the ideology or group you attach to, that whole "love is blind" thing, and what is the ideal here is to know what you love, not just love what you know, and by doing so avoid becoming a crazy loony fanatic bent on hurting others

look up "what is a cult" on cult clinic, you can see some religious institutional stuff in the making there to a degree, but when neutralized it's comfortable silly beliefs

  • @pedroelcavron and you will also see that by no means are religious cults the only one, they're just one of many, it's the system itself not the topic that's the issue, the process by which one goes about, not the words itself, it's just that so many people confuse these that one also has to talk about the words, alongside the system too and at some point you kind of find yourself going"how the hell will I deal with this" and you throw it all out we're only human sticking to simplicity is useful

  • I don't put much stock in religion either, for the very reasons the Hospitaller stated, however God has shown me enough in His Holy Word to know He is also wrath at how His name has besmirched by the evil hypocrisy done in His name. I am a Seventh-day Adventist because I have found my religion only by the teachings of this blessed church, imperfect as it is as well, and I have found it to be a very personal one and more importantly a Biblical one with our Ever Loving Creator.

  • It’s a shame that this film was bashed so much for it’s historical inaccuracy. People should have much more heeded the brilliant dialogues...

  • @koookeee i agree completely although from what i have heard from well studied historians it was pretty right on with some main points. for example when the muslim leader spared the lives after winning. in real life that did happen and europeans thought highly of sala hudin (sp?) because when they had one before they slaughtered all the muslims and Jerusalem was basically a tub full of blood. i believe the same way john Lennon does in imagine and this quote portrays it perfectly.

  • @koookeee What do you mean when you say historical inaccuracy? I would like to know, thanks.

  • This should really have more views, very wise and some of the religious fanatics and atheists themselves should watch this video.

  • what he said is true.... religion or religious people are fanatics, just as Jesus described the pharisees and teachers of the law,

    holiness is better than sacrifice....

  • It's also by far the dumbest quote of the film. A Hospitaller monk who says he puts no "stock in religion". Then why is he monk?? Hospitallers prayed daily in Catholic rituals of their order, i.e religion. The screenwriter and director made no effort to leave personal views of modern religion out of their Medieval characters, which is why we get this anachronism shown here.

  • @MrHihohum1 I think they were very intentional about putting this quote in the movie. This would have been very postmodern and a huge heresy at the time especially for a monk. What I think the message of this movie was was 2 things. I think they were trying to say that we can all get along no matter what we believe using the Christians and Muslims(i agree).i think also they were trying to say the religions are really the same (disagree)i don't think they ever meant to create a literal account :)

  • @MrHihohum1

    Then why is he monk??

Because he believes in Christ (God) Who is bigger than man made institutions. Its not hard to grasp :)

  • @MrHihohum1 If you listen and think more carefully, you can understand that what he is saying is the "religion" is a mere word to him since so many people had used that as an excuse for killing in the name of God or Allah or whatever the higher authority is. He is definitely displaying Christianity by referring to God, but he implies that no matter what your religion is, holiness is found the same.

  • @DanishKnoth

It's not the preachy message I'm arguing against, but the silly nature of the quote with the monk as a mouthpiece. Hospitallers represented organized religion more than anything. Hint: Some ordained rabbi saying "I put no stock in religion" or a Buddhist priest.. etc. Simply laughable!

  • @MrHihohum1 Yeah they represented their own religion but remember he states that "religion" is just a word since so many people say that "religion" is their reason for war, that he means people don't know what real religion is, so to him the word has become cliche.

  • @MrHihohum1 I have no doubt you could say that about many monks, priests & rabbis. However if we judge people by denomination and not by their heart, character and actions... we ARE putting stock in religion. Remember, in the film, the Hospitaller's order were up for the battle of Hattin... but this Hospitaller knew the consequences of such an action. If this film teaches us anything, it is that we should take everyone on an idividual basis... and not make assumptions based on badges or titles.

  • @MrHihohum1

If you watch the Director's Cut, it is made very clear that the Hospitaller is an angel, making his words here far more poignant. He's critical of religion for the way men twist "good" intentions into another sword to kill their enemies. If there is a god, I can honestly say (as an atheist) that it would be fairly disgusted by humanity's action in "Its" name, but good people would be good, regardless of faith; hence, the latter half of the line.

  • This quote, represents how I feel about god. I am not a religious man by any means, but I do feel close to god. I feel that by doing right things every day, and choosing to turn the other way during bad decisions has brought me close to god. This quote, is perfect for me.

  • @dragoonism So then you acknowledge that their is a higher power, well is this higher power one or many, if it one then it is absolute and hence there can only be one absolute truth

  • Thanks for uploading this! I've been looking for this quote for a while!

    It's a good quote!
