yes he has to learn Chinese to perform this kunqu opera. He is the first foreigner to perform kunqu in native language.

I saw the whole of this opera on British tv, (Channel 4)a few years ago,brilliant!

kieran196, One you saw in Lodon was the youth version Mudantin, produced by famous writer BaiXianYong. Tamasaburo did NOT perform in that version. Mudantin is one of the most difficult plays in Chinese Classic Theatre; Mudantin to Chinese opera is like what Romeo&Juliet to Shakespeare. Requirement for leading female role is particularly high; many actor/actress tried few suceeded. Tamasaburo poll exotically well. His technique is not perfect, but effort is impressive. Chinese really like him.
