Truth is Texas gets all of its Southern heritage from Alabama and Georgia settlers who left their homes after a land lottery when Texas gained its independence, as well as to escape aristocratic slave owning southerners who had a system of serfdom set up. Note the number of cities and towns in East Texas especially northern and central East Texas that are named after Georgia and Alabama cities. Settlers noted the striking resemblances to their former homes.
Houston, TX here. We big city people have a flattened accent that sounds similar anywhere you go, with only slight differences that you have to have a good ear to pick up. I think that's because of the media and business in metros. Most native Houstonians speak like you do. You don't get into the thick Texas accents until you leave the cities and visit places with names like "Flatonia".
I'm from Fort Worth, and now live in Denton. I also don't have an accent, but I do say some southern words like "y'all". The accent is in the East Texas and West Texas, mostly.
I did have to giggle a bit...at the very end, when you protested that you didn't know "anyone with a Southern accent...so..." your vowels were so slightly Southern! I only giggle because I'm a Southern gal who tried to ditch her accent only to have it come back at inopportune moments...
Your accent is subtle, but I can hear it, especially in "entrance" and "learned". I have cousins in Texas actually, but they talk just as I talk (from Northern California, and yes, some Californians *do* call it Cali) but they always say *y'all*, which is pretty catchy. My sister and I'd make fun of them for it but they'd always come right back at us with our use of "hecka/hella", hahaha. :)
@Hyperlongwing Well depends on who I'm talking to really. If I'm talking to my nephews (or anyone younger) I usually just lump them all into "All of you!". If I'm talking to my friends/family then "Hey guys/girls/you" or if I'm feeling particularly exciting 'chicas' pronounced with a thick American accent (even when Spanish is my first language). *Or* if I want to be sardonic, I'll use 'peeps', 'homez', or 'dawgs' (stuff I'd never say seriously). Depends on my mood really :)
I'm from Texas, and I know several people with Texas accents, I went to Nebraska a few years ago, and people remarked how I sounded so different. And I'm from Dallas Fort Worth area.:) so there are Texan accents! It hasn't died out.:) Yes!:) we all say y'all!:) it doesn't sound right to say "You all" :) so we say y'all.:) and alotta people wear cowboy hats and own cowboy boots!:) I'm proud to be called a "TEXAN"!!!!:)
@Number3of10 I saw a presentation in a linguistic conference at CUNY where linguists were presenting the impact of globalization and mass media on accent. Apparently, local accents are shrinking because of media influence. They presented the idea of something call universal accents. I thought it was interesting.
Beeing a european Im so confused about this. You dont sound more southern than any ordinary dude from florida. Is The George W Bush accent dying? Where are all the real texas accents? in Austin? Lubbock? Where? Daam you almost sound like me
@OmniPictures Well it's not too surprising given that he's from the Dallas area. People in the large metropolitan areas of the South (Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, etc.) don't usually have southern accents. I think this is largely due to movement to those areas from other areas of the country like Midwest, West, etc. If you want to hear that accent, find someone from a smaller city or rural area.

I love your accent, it's the best American accent... Just saying, because I know the USA from Hollywood only, and most actors speak like you...

I much prefer the real Texas accent that you seem to think is "funny". It is much more manly, confident, warm and friendly.

@stellalouise1 haha Okay. It seems funny just because I don't hear it all the time. No offense to any with it.

Thanks for taking part! Interesting to know that not everybody talks in the stereotypical Texan accent (which I rather like, btw). :)
Is this filmed on a DSLR per chance? ;) Looks great.
