One way the ancients saw it is that since God/The Great Spirit/Source/whatever is both male and female, so "gays" or "two-spirits" were seen as a physical manifestation of both the masculine and feminine energies in ONE body. This made these people very powerful magickally, as healer, and leaders.
As Christianity or other main religions spread, they had to destroy those who had true spiritual power and knowledge, thus women and gays were demonized. Gays must reclaim their roles as gatekeepers
OMG that was like the best vid ever! Thank you soooo much for making this video! I think that in the near future I am going to make a video response about gay or bisexual dieties such as Bahuchara Maji.
HAHAH i love you spyke, i think i came across something about the "two-spirit" people the once but didnt really know much about the subject, and you have made me feel empowered to be a gay male in spirituality. Love you
I personally don't see LGBTQQ spirituality as existing somewhere between male and female or a combination of it, but rather as a separate and overlaping form of spirituality. For instance; I am a gay male. Biologically I am male, emotionally I identify as male and female, and spiritually I concider myself beyond male and female and as something completely different. For some reason, I function in all of these aspects simultaneously. Gender polarity seems rather limiting to me.
I don't think that spirituality has a gender or a sexuality. I don't think gender or sexuality are relevant to spirituality, faith, religion or even emotion. After all what emotion is limited to a gender? Are we all not capable of the same emotions and expressing them in the same way?
To try to give things gender and reason to make yourself fit in is a very HUMAN thing to do.
I do, however, think there is such a thing as empowering the tribe. I like to point out, to the masses, that Gay Men and Women have been spiritually active, and quite important throughout history.
When I say I emotionally identify as male and female, I mean that that's what I feel I am and not arbitrarilly placing an emotion like anger into a male or female context. I feel I am male and I feel I am female living inside a male body. Spirituality does not have a gender, but is expressed differently through the genders just like physicality has no specific gender but is expressed differently through men and women as well as being expressed differently through other forms.
However, Pagan religions are those of fertility...generally of Male and Female. So where does that leave those who are both, or neither? That is why I like to point out the role of the Gay Man in spirituality throughout the ages, as a means of inspiring and driving those who count themselves as the few, the proud...The Berdache.
I think that the fertility aspect of pagan religions has been changed and adapted to fit in with the mordern views on human fertility. Im not suprised femenine men back then would have been looked at with great spiritual wonder, just think about some of their gods for example Dionysus, he was described as a ladie-man.
Apollo, as well, although considered very masculine entered into homosexual relations in his time. It was a different time, but that is why I think we should stress the past and LGBT spirituality in the past, as a means of empowering the tribe.
Yer Apollo and dionysus have alot in common. All over history you can find gay/bisexual, importance in spirituality and in everyday culture, the Romans and the greeks are just two examples of cultures that openly practised homosexuality and bisexuality. I think it's sad too think that our attitudes towards sexuality and gender have not evolved but depricated over time.
It is a sad state of affairs that before when homosexuality was seen as natural and -some would say- beautiful, but now it has been sullied to the state where we are second class citizens.
Agree. I do not think one's gender plays a role in one's path. It would just be another self-instated limitation. After all, aren't we searching for enlightenment? The state that is free of limitations?
I personally think gender can play a role in one's spiritual path, without the limitations you imply. If you think about it, we all hold the projective and receptive energies inside of us, whether you're gay or straight, male or female. I personally think you can work with both of those energies without limiting your scope spiritually. I definitely do.
If spirituality is being one with everything, then being an individual man/woman gay/straight no longer plays a role. After all, being one with everything involved unity, not individualism.
