noooo as an American Randy Newman stole something and wrapped the stars and stipes around it as usual .... YAWN .. Viva Europa .. where life goes on and we laugh at McDoalds culture .... yeh go live it sucker !
Peter Gabriel has actually said he is influenced by Randy Newman after having being introduced to him by John Silver( the drummer on 'From Genesis to Revelation') and that was way back in '69!
Newman laughs at it too. He's not some sort of blind American patriot. But just observing and speaking of his homeland makes him a total American jerk, right? Gimme a break.
...Once I was the credit to my credit card; spend what I haven't got, it wasn't hard... Sounds like Peter was influenced by Randy Newman or Tom Waits on this song.
Waits should've covered this back in his jazz days. It's more suited to him. He could've knocked it out of the park! As it is, it's a sweet track mixing cocktail jazz, Ray Charles styled vocals, blues and hard rock.
I remember Gabriel also referred to Mose Alison for this song in interviews.
