So let me understand, you are putting down the man.MartinHannett, who gave us Closer, hey good for you! So Temptatipon and Blue Monday, both sans Hannett, are cool recoeds? Hahahah you are a fun guy, we need yo yo s like you to analyze hannett's mental state, Come, man, lets listen to Confusipon, without Hannett, and Procession, with Hannett, and debate shit from pure beauty, ok?
Movement wasn't as good as Joy division's best but I'd say it was even darker and more mysterious. The production was murkier, the vocals buried. I think this reflects his even worsening mental and physical state of Hannett so it's no surprise the band decided to move on without him. With better production and arranging, Movement had the potential to be as good as Closer IMO. But a lot of songs are stagnant, sort of floating on- like this one. They needed more focus. That said, I still like it.
Interesting to here: some of the lyrics and sub vocals are clearer here than on either of my (CD) copies of this album. Der blech trommel menschen, il est morose, eterne.
All these comments on the vocals after Ian died and they changed there name this was not long after his death it shows how much he looked up to the man R.I.P both joy division and Ian that is why i think the vocals sound the way they do maybe Ian was with them not just in spirit
suffers from a weak production and less than great vocals, especially at the end when you want it to peak. But just listen to how multi-layered and sophisticated this song is, and how cleverly constructed. Like a piece of classical music really. Could really do with a re-mix, or Ian Curtis on vocals I guess.
am i the only one who thinks this could have been released by joy division and no one would be able to tell it's new order. it sounds so much like it.
I always thought at least some of these these were songs that were being worked on by the band and were meant for Ian to sing over, but never got the chance.
@UltimateVenom Well of course with Hook on bass, Sumner on guitar and Morris on drums it might just sound like Joy Division. One slight difference though, Ian Curtis isn't on vocals so everyone who knew the group would know right away. That comment gets upvoted?
i don't need to be told the members of two my favourite bands by a stuck up twat acting as he/she has some expert knowledge we don't all know. the reason, other than the music, that the vocals at that time did not sound far removed from joy division is because when barney took up vocal duties he had not yet found a style of his own. love ya xxx
@UltimateVenom The original post is tantamount to saying "Boy, they really sound like Joy Division" I which case one could only respond with "Well, duhhh, really? You don't bloody say." It's just such a ridiculous post and I can't believe it got upvotes. Love you too, xxxooo.
@UltimateVenom The only thing I know is that Barney has mimicked Ian's voice in those early years after his death. That's why it sounds so much like Joy Division's song =)
Pete has got such a better voice than barney.... This and dreams never end... great songs with great vocals..... Why didn't pete sing full time, he pisses over bernard.
He does give great vocal performances on those tracks, though I suspect he may have been ruled him out as the permanent vocalist because of his singing voice being very similar to Ian's. Just a guess on my part.
Movement was to me an album of considerable gravitas, given how recently Ian had died, and New Order were grappling with his departure. Very Joy Divisioneque, and probably cathartic for the members to have released on LP
It always used to annoy me when new order were interviewed, they'd often say how weak they thought movement was as an album. I pretty much like everything they've ever done, but movement is my favourite of all, followed by power corruption & lies.
@johnjhope I agree with you regarding Movement & PCL, but I think sometimes bands have a different interpretation of their work because they see it in terms of developing their own sound. Truth is Movement sounds very much like a Joy Division record, whereas PCL does not. Similarly, Depeche Mode hates their second album A Broken Frame for similar reasons, though as a whole album without hits, I think it holds up quite well - better than others that produced hits.
Yeah, they only played it live about seven times, all during 1981 (and I've got one of the gigs they aired it). Shame really, 'cause it was a great track live.
