  • Actually, four periods is a legitimate way to end a sentence, if the thought is complete....

  • I think the two period ellipsis, like many grammatical or punctuation errors, was born of character limits. Character limits are one of the most fascist corporate-imposed phenomena on the internet. Imagine an Email service that not only limited your character usage to 140 characters, but advertised they do that. They'd go out of business before they got their first customer, right? Wrong. They'd become the next Twitter. Now, I have to end in a two-period ellipsis because I'm out of characters..

  • You are not alone, Adam. You are not alone.

  • I thought I was the only person that freaked out over ellipsises (I have no idea how to pluralize that correctly).

  • @Allie2Squared Also, interrobangs are most awesome!

  • After seeing this video i now really hate when i see people use two or four dots.

Before this i didn't know the dots had a name or how to use them properly.Clearly the education system failed me.

  • ..

  • I would LOVE if you talked about doctor who!

  • How about when people use elipses at the end of every single sentence? It annoys the hell out of me. Though, the absolute worst is when people use two dot "elipses" at the end of everything. It's just screwing up something that was already incorrect to begin with.

  • I use three dots. But my phone hates me and posts 4... I kill myself slowly every time.

  • I get people using 4 dots. What the hell is wrong with these people?!

  • Can someone please make a "Case de Adam" .gif? Or link me to it if it has already been done.... It would be magical.

  • I had to scroll down so that I couldn't see the title because the two dots bothered me that much. Dnsjadwjadhwuachakjscn.

  • interrobang! You are offically my hero, no one believes me that it exists.

  • @mulvination I was equally as overjoyed when he mentioned the interrobang. I am an English major and I am proud. XD

  • I HAVE THAT EXACT SAME SONIC SCREWDRIVER!!!

But Adam probably doesn't care because he doesn't watch Doctor Who

2 period ellipses is probably one of the most annoying things on the internet..

  • omg... yes!

  • Gosh! Freaking love you!

  • Oh shoot if I knew about the King Of The Web gathering I would have totally gone! :'(

  • god people are so dumb..

  • i use that ALL THE TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • i find moms on facebook use ".." in their status updates.

  • Oh my gosh, that really annoys me, too! I thought I was the only paranoid perfectionist. I'm glad I'm not.

  • In Twilight, Stephanie Meyer used an ellipsis with four dots multiple times. I got a little angrier with each one.

  • You should watch "Stephen Fry Kinetic Typography - language". It was constantly running through my head during this video. Just search it, you'll see why.

  • When one ends a sentence with an ellipsis, he should add a fourth dot at the end to act as a period. Because otherwise the sentence never technically ended.

  • I went from happy, to sad, then back to happy in the first 20 second of this video...your videos make me emotional. I am glad you talked about ellipsis. They are one of my pet peeves when used wrong. I have a thing where you can only use a period or a ellipsis(2 or 4 dots get on my nerves)and same with ! and ? marks. It's either !, !!!, and the exceptional !!!!!!!!!! (only for something worthy like sonic screwdrivers on sale)

  • An ellipsis is meant to signal the intentional omission of a word/words. You didn't even mention the main usage of the ellipsis!

  • I use the two dot ellipsis to save space while texting, because my phone doesn't tell me how many characters I've used and it gets on people's nerves when one text turns to two because of just one character which could be cut out without greatly changing the meaning...

  • Doctor who?! Oh. Grammer. Hahahahah:)

  • Oh..

    -Justine

  • I greatly appreciate this video.

  • I have definitely ran across the whole 2 dot punctuation. And not on the internet either. While editing the yearbook! So frustrating when people can't use proper end punctuation. So thank you Adam for going over this topic!

  • Well you don't sound like an angry old man at all.. I really couldn't care less, but my mom sends me texts with a lot of these............things and they piss me off.

  • Actually, it was Charlie Brown, not Charles Schulz, that used the two dot ellipsis. Many people believe this is the reason why Lucy kept pulling the football away from him (:

  • HOLY CRAP I LOVE YOU DOCTOR WHO!...WAIT...dammit :P

  • I actually gave my sister shit about this recently because she was making tumblr posts with the two dots. I'm glad I'm not the only who is bothered by this.

  • hey i just subscribed. is it ok to ask whens Adam's birthday is, would like to send him a picture of uhm, him on an eagle holding a battle ax and flying into space.:) thunks. :)

  • OHMYGODHE'SWEARINGAFEZ!!!!!

  • You are so cute...

  • Hey! I believe we met at Vidcon‽ I enjoyed your video :)

  • I was excited because I thought you were going to talk about doctor who.

  • I know people that end their sentence with the way I'm ending this one.!.

    Or this.?.

    Or this..................

I just want to smack them and make them go back to elementary English classes.

  • its been the norm for like 5 years,

you know who also used ellipsis? Judas.

and what did Judas do? just kill Jesus

  • "... this is not my house but I am the only one here ..." Well, that just doesn't sound legal to me!

  • Well that video just didn't make any sense..

  • i hate the 2 dotted ellipsis. I despise it so... 3 DOTS. 3. okay. better. is it really that hard to type just one more dot?

  • can I make out with you... like now...

  • Can we do more of these? I'm horrible at grammer and spelling :'(

  • lol "but thats not what a stage dive is either, sorry" xD

  • I love the fact that you're talking about ellipses, because I truly believe that they are important in the world of grammar.

What also happens is people add another dot. Or they do one of these: ...................................................

    I don't even understand why.

  • I think Adam is trying to destroy my First Amendment Rights..

  • fezzes are cool

  • I wish I could go to the seattle Youtube gathering, I already have other stuff going on :/

  • awww i wish you would talk about doctor who =[

  • THAT DRIVES ME NUTS!

  • THANK YOU, ADAMUS. THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR POINTING THIS OUT. IT ANGERS ME SO MUCH THAT CAPS LOCK IS NEEDED.

  • Good point...

really, I hate when they put .. or .... two/four dots = not acceptable.

  • Maybe I wanted to stop the sentence twice. Maybe two periods should indicate a run-on sentence. SLOW YOUR ROLL, SENTENCE! Haha, those non-ellipsis are annoying though. I find it more irritating when someone decides to use 10+ periods though. "i hate u............ jk lolol!!!1!!!" Yeah, no. No. Just don't.

  • I get annoyed with people creating verbs from acronyms, for example "rofl'ed" and "lol'ed", but this stems from my hatred of people who actually say rofl irl.

  • ... THAAAAAANK YOOOOOOOU! *hug*

  • I see a lot of four period ellipsis, those are equally annoying.

  • Yes! A gathering in my hometown that I know about before it's happening!

Just look at the level of excitement on my face ---> :D

  • Punctuation is not grammar.

  • ha! I watched this while you were in my house... just you were asleep. I didn't break the rule!

  • I'm watching this as you sleep at my feet.

  • I always found it strange when people use an ellipsis at the very start or very end of a quotation. Why are they excerpting things? Clearly, unless the quoted passage comes at the beginning or end of a work (which is extremely unlikely), there is some material that precedes or follows the quoted material in the source. There's no need to clarify that. I feel ellipses in quotations should only be used to denote excerpted words in the middle of the quoted passage. Your thoughts, world of YouTube?

  • my abuse of ellipses is merely an overusage. I would never otherwise mangle such a fantastic communicative motif.

  • THANK YOU! I've seen people do that all the time. It bugs me... x)

  • but what if there are only 2 characters left?????????

  • I like how you apologize for your stage dive

  • I really wish I could go to the gathering.. It's my first day (at college) in Seattle, and I was hoping I could take a break from my rediculously long orientation to meet all you fancy YouTubers up here.. but alas, I am stuck moving into my dorm and doing social exercises with my fellow awkward freshmen..

(but for real, orientation does not need to be 5 days long.)

    have fun!

  • I saw this in my subbox and said to myself "that is not correct punctuation!". I'm glad you did it intentionally.

  • Two dots look better.. ;D

  • "OH MY GOD HE'S WEARING A FEZ"

  • Look Adam has a fez and a sonic screwdriver? What's he going to talk about?

    DIY in Turkey! Oh yeah!

  • . . .

  • '..' has to be the shortest video title I've ever come across.

  • I hate it when people do that..

  • Ellipses should always be used properly. I try to do so on a consistent basis. What really annoys me is when people use the word, "so" as a preposition at the end of a sentence. For example, "I went to the gas station but it was closed, so..." (Note the use of the ellipsis here.) and saying nothing further than that. So, what?! What happened next?! You're leaving me hanging here! COMPLETE YOUR THOUGHT FOR GOD'S SAKE! Something should always follow a preposition in the form of a phrase!

  • Oh man, I am so guilty of the two dot ellipsis. But it's obviously because i'm a law breaking bandit. F*CK THE GRAMMAR POLICE, they can't handle this lack of proper punctuation.

  • oh my, im guilty of abusing ellipses. haha just did that earlier on your other video.

  • OHHH MYYY GODDD YES. MY FRIEND DOES THIS AND IT ANNOYS THE HELL OUT OF ME!!

  • Oh man you do a great dot sound haha

  • One question. Why are you alone in someone elses house‽ (<-- Interrobang, I'm witty.)

  • I HATE the two dots!

  • My best friend does that, I never got it. But it annoyed me. YAY I'm not the only one!

  • Yeah, what you said.

  • what about lots of dots to notate pauses.......

    cus..... i do that alot.

  • WHAT TWO DOTS?! What kind of world are we living in! This truly is the end times.

  • haircut = fabulouso

  • Haha, awesome. I live in Seattle but I'm flying to Florida tomorrow. I have great luck.

  • It bothers me far more when people use an elipses at the end of EVERY SENTENCE for no reason...

  • I WISH I LIVED IN SEATTLE D:

  • when you described the interrobang it reminded me of bob ross

  • ...*

  • do something..

  • where did you get that sonic screwdriver?!

  • I like using two dots, just as I like using two exclamation marks. It gets your point across without being too extreme. I also like using '............' when there's an EXTREME pause, etc...

  • PREACH! I have the same pet peeve...and people who confuse homonyms such as your/you're their/they're/there our/are...you'd think thank after x amount of years of being alive and being exposed to the English language they'd catch on...

  • Holy $h¡†! There's a word for "..."???

Adam I'm not feeling "the end screen" for your videos. I've always seen you as the sort of person that knows what he wants to make a video about, films it, edits it, uploads it, and goes on to something not related to YouTube. You're better than an end screen slim. Your videos don't need it.

    .

You get a FIVE star thumbs up for the book shelf in the corner.

  • So I had kittens about to think you were gonna talk about docter who.

  • It's so weird. I typically end my sentences with.,,.;`~~'.,,.

Which mostly just means, "so yeah that sentence was sarcasm"

  • Double Period All the Way! WHAT DOES IT MEAN?

  • Wow. Your voice got so deep when you said, "Down there."

  • I shared this on my facebook because... YOU ARE SO RIGHT. Oh, my word people. One more dot isn't hard!

  • I KNOW RIGHT?

  • i do the two dot when i dont feel a full pause should fit there...

  • All punctuations are made-up punctuations though D;

  • People use two dots probably because they're really lazy. That third dot isn't that hard to type.

  • All flights are booked to Seattle. Sorry Adam. An across country flight should be done more in advanced. . . (Ellipses are supposed to have spaces in between them. That's all I'm saying.)

  • yay. I will see you at the gathering.

  • Friend: Do you know what the guy's name is who drew the Peanuts cartoon?

    Me: No, sorry.

Friend: I remember! It's Charles Schulz!

Me: Oh! You mean the guy who did ellipses with two dots!

  • I can't stand it when I do that... Same thing with two exclamation points or question marks. If you're going to use more than one, it has to be at least 3!

  • They named the airport where I live after Charles M. Schulz so he must have done something right..

  • ....

  • Adam has finally watched Doctor- Oh wait. LIAR! You have a knack for teaching stupid people how to do things properly. I appreciate this. You are helping to decrease world stupid :)

  • the two dot ellipses jokes in the comments are so annoying..

  • Adam i like your new video quality =) I wish i could go Zach, Cassandra, Matt, Morgan, and Voldey will be there Lucky! Well i already met most of you at VidCon!.......................................oh thats a ellipses times 10 i think ;p

  • my mind is in the gutter. "my social stuff is down there"

  • I don't understand why people would use two dots. Okay, maybe they just forgot it, but to do that purposefully ?? I don't understand!!! WHY? It doesn't even look nice! It's so incomplete! So sloppy! It's. Just. Awful.

  • There is something that annoys me, it's people who inverts smileys "(:" instead of ":)". You don't have the right to change smileys ! damn it !

  • @faurrell actually, i use those because skype's :) emoticon is terrible so i switch it to (: so i can still make a smiley face without skype changing it to an awful face

  • @YourAverageAdam ahah ok, you can disable them I think, but you lose the pedobear emoticon.

  • @YourAverageAdam exactly what I do on facebook

  • @YourAverageAdam One of the first things I always do in Skype is uncheck the option in 'Tools -> Options -> IM & SMS -> IM appearance -> Show emoticons'. (Much like the 'Hide known DOS extensions' setting in Windows Explorer which also gets shut off as soon as I get my hands on it.)

  • @faurrell (: i make my smileys like so, because only retards conflict their colons with the letters before it, this,(: flows better against the previous letters(:

  • @faurrell I feel like faces are subjective enough for this not to be an issue. It's not grammar, anyway.

  • I'm glad that's the angle you chose.... I thought you were going to talk about using them excessively.... I mean you could just end a sentence... but why do that? Periods indiciate that the thought is over and out... commas say, "Hey, I need to take a breath here!"... but ellipses.... keep adding them.... then continue your thought.... it's showing... well.... I'm not really sure what an overabundance of ellipses says about a person... I mean.... it couldn't be laziness.... THAT'S CRAZINESS...

  • @wayamy27narf Hehehe.. :)

  • . ‽

  • why not portland? :( i'm somewhat angered by this ...

  • @dreatothemax king of the web is hosting the gathering and they're a seattle-based company.

  • I thoroughly enjoyed this video... Thank you for teaching me about an ellipses!

  • i don't know what to comment..

  • @semicolson That reply will do for present.

*likes to make Pride and Prejudice references that no one ever gets*

  • @semicolson I like your username ^_^

  • hi..

  • I am so glad I'm not the only one who feels this way. I'm sending this video to all of my friends who are always missing 1/3 of an ellipsis.

  • hahahaha this was so good. I hate two period ellipses..

  • ..

  • Worse than *2 is when people use 8 or 10.........

    hate hate hate! =)

  • Comment removed

  • More annoying than the two dot punctuation that means nothing - when someone ends a question with ".?!" 1. I really doubt you were actually excited enough to require an exclamation point, 2. What could possibly be the point of you having a period there? It just makes you look like you can't type. -_-

  • so excited when I though you were talking about doctor who! but punctuation ia good too :)

  • I can't stand when people do that!!! I think they are just being lazy. Great video!!! :)

  • ..

    or

    ...

    that is the question..

  • Every time I've used .. it's been a typo. I just thought other people were making typos. I didn't realize this was a THING.

  • I have class. Adam, I'm mad at you now that I can't go.

  • MY FEZ! MY SCREWDRIVER!

    Why I ought a...

    Hey, I used it correctly!

    ...see what I did there?

  • i hate it when people do that too!

  • OMG you broke into someone's house to make a video? LOL

Did you know there is a gather in Nashville Sept 29th - Oct 3? We call it Southtube and would love to see you there.

  • @Texasred63 Break in? No, thought that sounds far more exciting then "left to house sit."

    youraverageburgluradam

  • @amadmaninabox I think you meant "though" not "thought" you baboon.

  • I go interrobang cause I'm hardcore.

  • I've done both this and the four dot ellipses. All I can do now is apologize and promise I'll never do it again. I’m sorry, I’ll never do it again and I hope you can forgive me.

  • Or they put more than two dots. Although when I'm typing fast and not paying attention to the number of dots, I do that.

  • If I could get down to Seattle, I so would. Sadly, it's about a 8 - 10 hour drive and I don't even think it's legal for me to get into the US by myself =(

  • In order to promote economic recovery, the US Government has reduced all ellipses by 33 1/3 percent. Two-point ellipses are now the norm.

  • I was sort of excited when I saw the Sonic and Fez, but I guess you just wanted to get my hopes up.

  • I think I'm dropping out now. I've learned everything I need to in this video.

  • Thank you for demonstrating an appreciation for ellipses...the best punctuation marks ever. \^_^/

    Punctuate responsibly.

  • Maybe they're trying to make their sentence seem more final.

DOUBLE PERIODED! ALL UP! RIGHT THERE! o_o Mhm. I just verbed period.

  • Comment removed

  • @HannieHee You verbed the period. I'm over-analyzing that and it just got beautiful.

  • you should do the end screen more. i enjoy them.

  • hayleyghoover also made a video about this, or at least mentioned it, but that does not make it any less relevant. This is definitely a message worth repeating.

Also, as on that video, I'm SO tempted to write a sentence with a 2-dot ellipsis. So tempting..

  • interrobangs should have their own button on my keyboard.

  • sweet sweater

  • because of adam, i will stop using two pointless dots, and add one on.

  • You have very pretty editing..!
