  • anybody know what the first ever game system was?

  • "making fun of Odyssey is like making fun of your grandparents " enough said

  • thats it im keeping my ps3 till i become 40 years old and im going to post it on youtube and kids are going to be like "woah how could they play on that shit" xD

  • Just found one in a attic yesterday. Its the tail end of the run 1975. They changed the plastic of the late models and turned yellow. What serial # is yours?

  • do you know of any other ac adapters that would work with the odyssey. i got one for Christmas and it didn't come with an ac adapter so i have no idea if it works or not.

  • 1971

  • I got one of those for Christmas!

  • buy a xbox 360 slim then lol

  • Even if the games seem kinda lame and boring (well from my perspective), gotta give the first game console respect.

  • i bet that once the xbox 360 is as old as that a working one that hasnt been repaired will be the rarest cansole ever

  • fucking long video and no game at all. 1/10

  • "why is it so ASS"

  • @haxor758 What does that even mean?

  • wow almost 40 years and still works perfect my original ps2 did not last 3 years then I had to get the ps2 slim version back in 2006 witch is still ticking. And I still have my snes and I had it sence 92 about and the only thing that had to get fixed was my plug after I got that fixed its still runing perfectly today.

  • This works after 40 years and the Xbox can't seam to last more than 1.

  • about to be 40 years old :D

  • cool man its an awesome system i got ome myself in the box hard to get.

  • Awesome! Our first pong game was made by AMF (of bowling fame) and that had to be '75 or '76. I love those funky big controllers on the Odyssey! Give that to a kid today with those huge television overlays! Have fun!

  • high quality my ass lol

sorry i had to say that

  • Release Date: Aug. 1, 1972

The Odyssesy is three months older than my dad.

  • have you done a review for the 3DO?

  • Its sad that alot of electronic companies no longer build things to last. it's like technology is moving so fast that the creators of mobile phones and especially games consoles just build a product as quickly as they can before the product gets outdated. I mean this system was built almost 40 YEARS AGO!!!!!! and it can still work unlike the xbox 360 and ps3 which usually last 2-4 years.

The most reliable console i've owned is the Nintendo Gamecube.

  • @Talentz92 Well, there's numerous reasons.

1: The company buys cheaper parts to save on money

2: New consoles have A lot more components and as such, are a lot more fragile.

3: The shorter the life span of your console, the sooner you'll buy another one from them.

  • good video but the Angry Video Game Nerd is boss. Respect is required.

  • omg i got one

  • Just loving these videos of the super-ancient systems. And it definitely is amazing how these older systems can still work well 30 or even 40 years down the line, compared to the flimsy plastic systems of today. It's the old school, sadly lost attention to production quality and materials.

  • You know a lot about game consoles.

  • I wonder if people 37 years ago accidentally hit the reset button a lot ^^

  • Ps Vita Is 7th generation

  • @omardub15 Its actually eight generation and so is Nintendo 3DS and Wii U.

  • actually there is one one-player game called Odball which was released in 2009. got to love the homebrew market

  • It was not nintendo releasing a similiar gamebut there was this game called "tennis for two" that was a different looking game but it was a Tennis game and it was available in a lybrary. Those people made the game themselves. Probably the only interesting games on Magnavox were the Tennis Game and the SHooting game but to be true shooting at a dot is kinda stupid today but back then it was interesting. Specially for kids.

  • The Odyssey is actually a clone of the Brown Box.

  • Is there Halo on this console?

  • i agree with AVGN this system is complete shit. I am an avid video game collector but NO ONE on this planet should buy this system now a days and play it. Honestly youd be better off laying with rocks. this thing is a POS and its ok for collection purposes but if anyone plays this thing they have NO life.

  • does it reads blu ray?

  • @MrLokification

Am I the only one that finds these inane comments about the performance of older consoles and computers annoying? Yes a C64 has tiny amount of RAM when comared to your MacBook. Yes a Magnavox can't play blu-rays like your PS3. Yes an Atari 2600 is missing the 3G/Wi-fi capabilities of your iPad 2. The sarcastic comments just aren't funny. They are moronic and ridiculous.

  • @SuperCrankyGuy just for your knowledge, i still play with my nintedo 64 and i love to make my old pentium II based pc run linux 26, and you mentioned three piece of hardware I don't own and i'm not plannig to buy. And I hate apple. so, please, before crackin into hysterical complaints because you got sand in your pussy, think about what you're sayin, you dumbass.

  • Comment removed

  • Can you play without overlays?

  • Mine works great too... I also have one unit NIB ... So there's two that still work!

  • That console was relased in May 24 1972.

  • That console was relased in May 24 1972

  • I have a magnavox TV in my bedroom, I got it in like 2005 though.

  • 0:01 - Skip the advertisement :)

  • pmsl cuz half ov the consoles on youtube are thinner than the ps3 phat and none ov the consoles ever got viruses LOL

  • Hey gamester81, Does the Magnavox Odyssey work with only tubed TVs or did someone make an adapter so I can play it on a Coaxial TV... well of course for tvs 18" to 25" .

  • @scrapdog63 The Magnavox odyssey can work on any TV with a coax adapter, I think that the only thing that will not work with a flat screen is the gun though I know for all light guns this is true, the Magnavox light gun may work anyways though I never tested it so i can't say for sure.

  • i just got mine in the mail

  • are there worth any money? cuz i got one only used a few times still in box..

  • I have one of these with all 1100 games. bought it for a little over a dollar works great

  • I think I just found my favorite youtuber

  • I think its nice to watch a calm gamer that doesnt criticize every game review unlike avgn but avgn is great though.

  • I have a Magnavox Odyssey that displays just the dots and ball on the screen but the ball goes through both players when I try to play Game Cart #1. Does anyone know what the problem is with the collision detection?

  • It's brilliant how the first console can last longer than an Xbox 360

  • @eateroftheflame and an Xbox 360 can last longer than a Shitstation 3 ;)

  • @TheBL00DAssassin They both die much more than they should. I stay clear of both of them.

  • @eateroftheflame wait 37 years and if there are still xboxes around then you can judge

  • @AwwC00L I was only joking around, I just thought it was funny that a console that pre-dates rom cartridges has survived longer than a modern HD console with online gaming etc.

  • @AwwC00L Fail...

  • @AwwC00L OK. We're all retro here. Except you. So gtfo.

  • @AwwC00L

well xbox slim doesnt really brake so i think there will be

  • @pkm100 yes it does. they still die just as often as any other 360. microsoft was right about them not haveing the red ring problem anymore....they now just have a red light instead, so technically they didnt lie as they never said "we have fixed the problems" only "it will no loner get the red ring of death."

nice way to exploit a loophole if you ask me.

  • @TeamHeavyHitters13

You probably just a fanboy, all the stats on internet, reviews say that xbox slims is way better and doesnt brake a lot as wel as players i hear a lot less complains now since slim came out, dude both of the consoles are good, i was just saying, i dont know why you took it as an attack on ps3 or something.

  • @pkm100 not a fanboy,i cant stand them.i did months of research before buying my ps3,and i bought it simply because i thought it was a better system and had much better reviews and stats than the 360.

and i quoted exactly what microsoft said at the slim's release,or possibly at E3 when it came out,not quite sure, but i have seen the new ones die just like the old ones.i have friends that go through 360s at least once a year and others with launch ps3s with no problems.and learn to spell break

  • @TeamHeavyHitters13

oh ok then, but two of my friends have slim and it it always works and the reviews i read said thats its way better then the arcade one or whatever was the first one, i have a jasper and im just really happy with it, lots of my friends have ps3, ps1 was just magic when i was a child but Sony has no Franchises now, if there was still Crash bandicoot like the one on ps1 i would possibly choose ps3 XD

  • @AwwC00L by that time there will still be more magnavox odssey then 360 :P

  • :)

  • @eateroftheflame Indeed :D

  • That thing is ancient...

  • Thumbs up if u want this game

  • @Nasri589 I am not thumbing up because I'm sick and tired of these type of comments but yes I do want one

  • i'm pretty sure Simon was not by Mattel, but Milton Bradley

  • FUCK YOU. The number 3 was the best game ever!

  • @milkweed93 hahahahahhahaha took me a sec to understand that

  • FUCKING ADS

  • Damn you are the USA Lukemorse1! LOL!!

  • odyssey, 360, same thing

  • OMG 200 CONSOLES!

    wow

  • Can you buy and review the AVGN DVD's Volume 1,2, and 3?

  • who came here because of the AVGN?

  • hey cool review.

    but i have a question:

is that odyssey gun from AVGNs video a joke or serious?

i mean do you have it? does it work? does it exist??

    I'd be interested in that.

  • It's the first HOME videogame system. In 1971, the future founders of Atari released the first ever Arcade system called Computer Space, which was based off the 1962 game Spacewar.

  • Can you do a proper review of this, as in, show us some footage of you playing it?

  • Great review!

Thanks for keeping it family friendly too.

"F" bombs are just not necessary.

  • Thanks mate all your videos are helping me because im currently doing a college games development course. Hopefully you can help me get a distiction. thank you.

  • NEVER SELL DAT THING! if i were u

  • had 2 of these and ran them in SLI and it ROX

  • give you $600 for it

  • @juanXDT lol Are you serious? By now, the Magnavox Odyssey would pretty much cost $30. Maybe less.

  • @NejiHyuga900 These are worth between $75 and $200 depending on condition and serial number. Some have been known to go for more.

  • @MattTheSaiyan Are you serious? I seen a Game Boy Advance SP that costs $20 at a pawn shop.

  • @NejiHyuga900 Are YOU serious? GBS SP is fairly recent, and common, and has few people that really still want one. This system is old, rare, and is reasonably large demand by collectors. That's why is costs much more than a GBA SP. How powerful a system is has nothing to do with value, and when a system is 5-8 years old is when it's at it's least valuable, since it's obsolete but not retro either.

  • What no online gaming???????

  • @venom477 LOL

  • but we must remember kc munchkin. they lost lots of money on that. and thats why i dislike the system the system

  • why m i so jong?

i wish i was born in that time

i was born in 1989 and my first Pc was a pentium 133MHz

that was in that time the best pc you can ever buy:P

with a voodoo 3D graphic card in it:P

the pc was rebuilded to a sega pc:P

later whe put windows 95 on it

but great vid and great game console i wish i have one:P

    Cheers!

  • I'm hoping you could help me, have you any idea what the console was that was around just before the Sega Master System? I remember on the TV screen the graphics were simple, and the controls were a simple joystick. we had a game were you had a wee horse and you jumped over "hedges" the sound effects were simple, you could hear a horse running If I'm right the Horse and hedge was all blue and was in 2D,On a rolling screen do U no what this was? it was Before we moved house in 1992!

  • @PhilipK100 Well the Sega Master system was in 1986, an earlier sega system was the sg-1000 though your system might be the Atari 2600 unless it had a key pad too, then it might be the colecovision.

  • NES was the graandfather of games. this is the stone age.

  • I'm not quite sure the order of it, but I believe it went;

    Magnavox Odyssey

    Magnavox Odyssey 100

    Magnavox Odyssey 200

    Magnavox Odyssey 2

    Magnavox Odyssey 300

    ---------------------------------------------

There's so many clone consoles made, I can only keep up with the Magnavox, Atari, Nintendo, Sega, Sony, and Microsoft versions.

  • @cicifire345 NEVER!!!!!!!!!!NES was one of the "newer ones".The grandfather was fucking PONG! it was nearly the same as the tennis game from the odyssey. -.-

  • @Goombuu pong is too old to be a grandfather...moree like great-great-great. and the nes isnt new anymore,in case you havnt noticed;D

  • @cicifire345 I said it was one of the "newer" ones I mean that it's a lot newer then atari and pong and stuff -.-

  • RawR im a magnavox odyssey Grrr

  • magnavox should make an odyessy 3. o3o

  • im looking for one of these. any1 want to sell 1 2 me?

  • @gameboy3800 good luck in your search. These suckers are rare ! Have you checked Ebay lately ? I could have swore I saw one in there a couple of days back.

  • @gameboy3800 AHH I did Here's the Item number. MAGNAVOX ODYSSEY PONG 1975 SYSTEM #11936817 NO BX MOD60

Good luck :) Starting bid is $199.00 so the question remains. How bad do you want it ? lol

  • @GamingHistorySource looking 4 the 72 version. sry :'(

  • @gameboy3800 I believe it is. But Upon closer inspection I believe it was modded for updated televisions. But I did see another one complete for about $300.00 starting bid. If you do get it Please make a video so We can see your find :D Good luck :)

  • @wingnut4427 once i can get enough $ i'll defiantly get one. and i post a vid about all my new systems. so u can cound on me 2 post one of the oddyessy.

  • RV out? You mean RF?

  • I Have One.

  • You said it predated Pong by 3-5 years, however, Pong was also released in 1972.

  • @theultimatekoopa2 I think he means the home version of Pong, which indeed was years later.

I loved the Odyssey in that you could "charge the net" in its version, whereas Atari's version only allowed you to move your paddle up and down.

  • the old video game is horrid

  • how many consoles u have

  • @ratabebo Close to 200 I think.

  • @Gamester81 for real???

  • @Gamester81 You are hardcore gamer

  • @Gamester81 can u do a review of the light rifle with the odyssey? cuz if u have it please post a reviewed detailed about it.

  • @Gamester81 you have way to many i only have 8 including handhelds

  • @Gamester81 i only have 5 :D

  • @Gamester81 can u show a video of ur consoles?

  • This is a great video. I was simply interested in the history of console games and was fed up with the bull that I was getting with the video game nerd among others. (It doesn't help that Google shoves him on every single game search you do. I wish you could have an 'ignore' list for people like him when you search.)

I am very interested in seeing the games run with and without the overlays, just a more in depth look at the games them selves. (without trying to be funny, just factual)

    Good job

  • I actually have one of these, including the shotgun controller.

I found a website where someone documented the serial numbers on these, and luckily mine was made in the very first batch.

Unfortunately, it spent several decades in my attic, so the box is beat up, and I have no idea if it works.

Anyway, thanks for posting. It's cool to see people still have these. I wonder how many are left. They truly are museum pieces.

  • Im going to do a serius video showing gameplay footage with rifle footage in a couple months. A little compatition for gamester81 maby :D

  • I was at my grandmas house for a family get together and I told them I bought a magnavox odyssey and odyssey rifle for1000 dollars and my cousin (who I love dearly) got upset at me, and said "I think had an odyssey when I was a kid and I put it on the tree lawn", then my dad cuts in and says "your collecting old worn out tree lawn garbage". My uncle tells me he collects coins, and apparently THOSE

will be worth somthing someday. I do live with my parents and im 16. what should I say to them?

  • It's a museum piece. Hang on to it.

  • And I don't think you can make your relatives understand how important this item is. It's a piece of video game history and the value of rare collectables like this will only go up as time goes by.

  • Wow, you really took me back with this video. In addition to the screen overlays, the football and roulette boards really took me back to my youth in the 70's. I totally forgot about those. Thank you for a wonderfully nostalgic video.

  • No footage of the system in action?

  • Comment removed

  • out of the 300,000 that are out there, there are about 274,678 left, because these things are fucking tough lol

  • I am sure most of them ended up in landfills.

  • were on earth did you get that

  • my mom had 1 of these when she was young she was gonna get it from my grandma but my grandma sold it can u get these on ebay

  • I just checked EBay, and there are several on sale right now. They range in price $539 to around a thousand dollars.

So, you can still get them, if you can afford them.

  • @ianmac2010

on the german ebay market there was one that just went over for around 200 euros, which should be around 260 dollars I think. these r just collectible items. I mean nobody ever wants to play with those. I enjoy playing the SNES even in 2010, but this (I've seen the irate gamer review of this consol and the games) and it surely is no fun. but the tv overlay idea was genious in my opinion

  • Ody be ridn you probably had the Oddesey 2

  • yes my mom told me that she couldn't afford 1 of these but she got me 1 for christmas my favorite game is tennis its so fun i think i had the best christmas ever than anybody

  • In the 70s, my Grandma would get the latest toys for us kids to play while the parents sat around and drank wine. She had the Odyssey that had the handle integrated into the game cartridge. It was about the same time the Atari 2600's became popular. I seem to remember the Odyssey having better graphics and sound but the Atari had BETTER games. Way cool video Gamestar81!

  • @OdyBeRidin

I'm glad this vid brought back some nostalgia for you.

  • @OdyBeRidin, If the games had handles on them, then it the Odyssey 2, which sold much better than the Odyssey.

  • @OdyBeRidin, the Magnavox Odyssey didn't really have graphics, it had overlays, which was the substitute for graphics.

  • @OdyBeRidin This odyssey you have was Odyssey 2 aka Videopac

  • @OdyBeRidin livin the life

  • @OdyBeRidin This was Odyssey 2

  • My Dad said he had one of these when he was a kid, when the static electricity didn't hold the overlays on, they had to use tape. I wish it was still around : ]

  • I cant believe that you steel have this gaming system! Wow! Respect to video game history!

  • The games were supposed to work with TV screen covers that stuck with static, but they'd peel off mid-game. They also had painted borders, but didn't restrict movement so there was always yelling if someone went through a wall. We really tried to get them to work, but they never did. The football game was a joke, even back then, but the light gun was extraordinarily cool, even by today's standards. The only fun games were shooting and pong w/english. I post a reply...

  • The games were all designed as variations on pong. Two squares. So if two squares hit a ball, it was called pong. In Cat-n-Mouse If the Mouse-Square, got touched by the Cat-Square then it would disappear. The TV covers showed you a maze in a house to the cheese, you'd have to steer the squares through the maze to stop the mouse or to get the cheese, but there was actually nothing to stop you from going through the walls. You were just on your honor.

  • I had a system like this in say 84, 85 when I was 3 or 4 it was called Odyssey or Apollo 2001 something like that. It was shaped like a boomerang had a selector knob in the middle for the game you wanted to play and a slider on each side as a control. I looked it up once and it said it was made by Magnavox. Guessing the next model up from yours. Back in 84 it was old cause the kid downstairs had Atari and he had no idea wtf system I had. Think my aunt uncle bought it in the late 70's.

  • Yeah there were a number of "Pong Clones" released after this that were also went by the name of Odyssey. They are different than this since the games were built in, and the controls were built into the system.

  • @Gamester81 It was a magnavox I saw it on the net somewhere.

  • @Gamester81

dude where did you get this from? are they very rare now?

  • @Gamester81 have you reviewd the intellivision yet im gonna search

  • Low blow at 360 really unnecessary.

  • Oh hey, I recognize you! You are the one who gave Pete Dorr a bunch of cool Star Wars stuff and a Turbografx! That was pretty cool of you.

  • Cool thanks for watching.

  • I would love to see what the inside of one of these looks like. :D

A nice video, I'll watch more of yours. :D

  • can you hook it up on the tv and show us what it looks like???

  • Can you also show us how the games for this looks line on a TV screen>?

  • Comment removed

  • gamester, why dont you reveiw the odyssey 100-500 or the odyssey 2?

those would be some cool videos.

  • Cool thanks for the request. I might do the Odyssey 2 soon. The other ones are just pong clones and not that interesting to be honest. I might do a vid on those eventually.

  • It good to see a video of this system actually talking about it in a good way since it was the first.

  • nice vid john, i hope to get this some day, but id get bored of it fast, but for being the first home video game system, it deserves respect.

  • LOL thanks for watching my vid. This review is nothing like AVGN's. Other then the fact we own the same system how is it a ripoff?
