I love the 'Boys', I've been in a mega-good mood all day, and I don't want to be a downer, but there are two things I have to pan about this. First; "We've got about 350 people lined up to buy 'product'...". What depth. Granted, 'moving units' is important, but it's not the newest Lil' Wayne travesty: it's a previously undisclosed cultural relic. Second, I don't like to see Brian being coddled as the same frail, drug-induced imbecile he was 45 years ago. Anyone else feel embarrassed for him?
WOW. I got Brian to sign HIS version of Smile in Adelaide, Australia in 2004. We weren't even allowed to talk to him, had to hand our copy of the album to the tour manager who would pass it to Brian, then back to the manager then to me. Great to see him have some personal contact with the people that genuinely love him, The Beach Boys and of course his music :)
This is so fulfilling to see. I was 12 years old when 'Heroes & Villians' hit the airwaves.....I have never heard anything to compare, and I still think the original 45 rpm release captured the best of it. It's beyond beautiful.
Javier23gol:i agree with you.i'm 42 and liking the music from the 1950s,'60s since i was 6 years old,if not younger.plus i grew up also listening the stuff from the 1970's and '80s.what happened to great pop music after1989 is a big mystery to me.only few artists from then on were okay in my book(no wonder i listen to a lot of country music as well the older stuff since the 1990s)i say enjoy the music, don't listen to what your friends think.1 day they'll change their minds and agree with you.
I think Brian is pissed that only 350 people showed up. You can tell. he waited so long and wanted this to be epic and no one came. Fuck! why can't America respect real music. I learned about the Smile sessions in my history of Rock class in high school and since then have wanted so badly for it to exist and be sold. And now it's here. :)
@OropherThranduil The guy was mentioning titles from the record "Heroes and Villains" "Wind Chimes" "Vegetables" and so on, I think the record was being played in the store. Brian looked a bit amused there, was that Jeffrey Foskett beside him?
Notice how on every video relating to "SMiLE" that incorporates the music from the album uses it so masterfully? You can take all different parts of "SMiLE" and everything works so brilliantly as music for either an opening theme or a closing segment!
The recluse is doing something he really hates, going out to his public signing records and receiving attention. He looks like a trapped animal, poor guy, but he's greeted with a wave of honest affection. Beach Boys fans are good ones!
What do you say to a man who wrote the soundtrack of your life?
A friend California attended this event, and had a 2-CD edition autographed for me. If I had been there, I would have urged Brian to stick with the band he's got now, because doing the rumored Beach Boys reunion will put Brian back in the unhappy situation with Mike Love. With "The Smile Sessions", The Beach Boys go out on a high note. The box set is superb.
@alexandertarangerkin Yeah Brian gets nervous around strangers, he was shaking like a leaf when I met him in Glasgow the poor thing. Great man though!
@Javier23gol Dude my friends thought i was weird 25 years ago when i was listening to the beatles, beach boys and the monkees. while they were listening to bon jovi and poison. i don't think justin beiber or lady gaga will be will be rereleasing albums in 45 years.
@Javier23gol I'm happy about you kid for saying that!!!
I would have cried in happiness, if I were there and have THAT IMPORTAND MAN singing my copy of "Smile Sessions" - I envy the people that had been at this store that day:D - no, I 'll correct this, I'm happy about you:D
O.K. let me get this straight....I live in Downey, CA only three cities away from Long Beach, CA and I traveled to Hollywood instead and bought my set at Ameoba Records and DIDN'T MEET Brian Wilson. OH....FAIL! LOL!
@MattHatter Aaaaaah, there's a lesson to be learned there! Fingerprints is the Best place for music - not only buying the recorded music but you should check out their live in-store performances. Either subscribe to their email list, or check out their homepage (but be prepared to check it frequently - they had a show last night, one coming up on Monday and another a week from Sunday!)
@Presto418 I agree with you. The Beach Boys sucks at merchandise. For every Beatles album they realased a DVD with the making of that album and The Boys just doné have a lot of cool dtuff for the fans. I will like to see a DVD with the making of SMiLE or Pet Sounds or just any other cool albm like Surfin USA or Shut Down vol. 2 ;)
