Oh M Gee, I miss my home!!! I remember complaining of the rotten egg smell that the mill used to put out, and my mother said to me "that's the smell of money"! Those were the good old days.
I just watched a show on NHPTV about Berlin called "By The Rivers Edge" an oral history of Berlin,NH. It was a bittersweet story! Worth watching. It was sad when the mill closed.
my youngest daughter was born while in new hampshire.I worked at the boiler we were rebuilding it.james river then but i heard they changed that at sometime too.sorry to see your town shutting down..i have been all over america and i have to say~i really liked Berlin New Hampshire..it was cold in the winter and the short summer i was there 92.end of 93..good luck berliners..
I miss Berlin!!! Lived there 1987 - 1991 (ex-wife's hometown), great area, could always tell when the weather was going to be bad by the smell up on Hillside, fishing, moose and especially the people were great. Nothing like a small town! So many friends worked at the paper mill, my how times change!
I grew up there in the 80's and 90's. This town was destroyed by bad politics and not thinking ahead. There are many immoral people that are now feeling the effects of what they have done. It is tragic, this was a great place to grow up. My only wish is that I could of had a chance to change this town but unfortunately it was to late. I now can truly say I will never return. RIP Berlin
@neriot1 I agree with that...I'll miss it everyday I'm away, but going back isn't a good idea for anyone whose managed to get out. It used to be an amazing place...I miss the way it used to be.

@snerddarplol you could cruz thru them all in a weekend..i done that while i was up there working on the boiler rebuild..great place and the scenery is outta this world.i enjoyed my time there.
Our hometown berlin N.H. when we where kids this place was awsome with a river that flowed in the middle. But as time rolled on companys moved the papermill is gone, jobs are not there. Now its seems to be a little somber town, I wish that some company or business ...would move up there to bring this town back too life, like it was back in the 60's and 70's
@2009zgbb Well the new federal prison is built there now and jobs are def coming back. My mom is going to the prison and thats why im moving up there soon :P
i just got back from there, it is a very beautiful town
@M1dnightSou1 They aren't planning on hiring many people from Berlin for the Federal Prison. They did most of their hiring from people downstate who lost their jobs at the other prison.
I don't live in America but every time i've visited i's been to New Hampshire. I was part of an English Exchange with BHS and i don't know whether it's the people or the place, but i love spending time there.
This is such a powerful wideo. I saved it to one of my lists and after laying it again, I feel somewhat connected to the town in a way. Very heartfelt and bittersweet, especially the demolition frames. I used to live in southern NH. I miss it.
Well this place sure beats the hell out of Wales... I advise you never to even have thoughts of moving to the UK... its the worst place ive been in my life.
I knew several girls from Berlin who came down to Nashua to go to school in the early 70's. You could tell they came from someplace special because they were all such outstanding human beings!
First of all, you moron, it is obvious that you have never been to Berlin as you can't even spell it. Secondly, didn't your mother ever teach you that if you don't have something good to say, shut the "F" up!
My husband (and the previous 3 generations) grew up in Berlin. I didn't-the only exposure I had was as a child, passing through on the way to Canada. Held my nose as much as possible!
The video & music made me homesick, made me cry. You've missed a lot if you've not been here...a tight knit community who watches out for one another, the French Canadian accented English ("Fringlish")..love listening to it!, the Dairy Bar, & so much more.
I never made it to Berlin during my time in NH. I lived in Keene from 91-96 and had trouble finding work there. I had gone to Keene State before that. I moved to Florida in 96 and I have been here ever since other than a few short vacations. I do hope to one day move back to NH.
Hi! Just wondering if you noticed the, er, epithet in pink-red letters at the center of frame 1:50, a little addendum to the Berlin Skate Park sign. Not that I mind, I just get the sense you didn't know it was there.
i miss Berlin i'm in college now but Berlin is the best place in the whole world i actualy liked BHS and i Love Bobby " how you doing" and the Great "WHY"
1988 BHS Grad. Worked in the mill from 89 to 91 and then from 96 until Jan.08. Love the area...born and raised. Wanted to raise my son there but the lack of a diversified economy forced me to leave recently. For all the efforts city officials have made to attract other forms of employment, the remain shortsighted and narrow-minded on what the future of Berlin could be. Here's to hoping a real DIVERSIFIED vision for Berlin's future takes hold so that others can come back and enjoy this gem.
Nice video. I moved here from Arizona about five or six years ago. It's definitely the best place I've ever lived. :) I'm going to add this to my MySpace...haha.
Great job on the vid, missing a few important things - Fagins Pub, Ski Jump, arena, The Pastures, Brown school playground - the hell with Marston:), Mels, logs & trees and the bastards that cut them down, god save the loggers, that doesn't mean convert them too 'turnkeys' (correction officers), and whats a Berlin video without a pick of Bob Hagart, Mike Gaydo, Wayne Thompson, Mel Rodriguez and other great leaders,Good Luck Mr. Bertrand! Beautiful pictures though. Thanks for making this.
Ironically, those who made life so miserable for the paper companies to exist are now faced with the fact that all that sustainable forest land once preserved for paper company raw materials are now being parceled off to the highest bidder, developed and forever lost!
Great video, but seems all the comments about Berlin, and how great it was are by people who no longer live there!!! If it was so great, why are you all living in Florida? Face it, Berlin sux large! I know, I tried to go back there, and lasted 7 months. Good luck!
My wife was born and raised in Berlin, she has a real connection to it. It's a shame the lack of industry keeps people from staying. Looks like the new surrounding prisons may add a new spark to the community.
