I had the pleasure of hearing, meeting, and talking to Dr. Abdalati about 3 yrs ago. As a Cryospheric researcher, he is a wealth of info regarding the Greenland ice. I learned quite a bit from this man and shared with him that of the 11 science teachers that make up our high school science dept, I was the only one teaching the truth about AGW. He was quite shocked. Since then, we have had a huge turnover in staff with new grads and now have 10 who don't deny AGW. Only one left now. :)

Ice is actually less dense than water, because of the bubbles of air that it contains. That's why it floats.

However, if you're referring to turning water from liquid to gas, then you're right, and it does indeed expand.

Why is global warming causing this? Lots and lots of heat is required to melt ice with no rize in temperature. Also at many places in Antarctica there is rock under the ice - so no hot water to melt the ice. A better explanation would be the absence of the ozone layer which then allows hot sun rays (ultraviolet) to heat up and eventually melt the ice.
