Let me make it straight, Ghenghis khan took over most of Asia and Eastern Europe. When he took over a major piece of land he would leave his son, or a grandson to rule it. After taking over middle east a group of Mongols were left to govern it. Mognols in Middle east converted to islam, Mongols in europe to Christ and in central asia to budhism. Middle eastern natives couldnt pronounce "Mongol", so they said Mughal. There were no turk, or indian ingenuity but supremely from their Mongol rulers

@flysnake12 No, the orginal Mughals were Muslim Mongols. Mughal means "Mongol" in Persian. They were descendants of Genghis Khan, the ones that wiped out many Arabs and Persians in the 1200s. However, within the next 200 years, many of the non-Muslim mongol conquerers became Muslim (because of it's beauty might I add), and adopted Persian culture.

In the 1500s, when they came to Delhi, Delhi was being led by an Afghani (Muslim).

@182popeye They were descendants of the Mongols as well as the Timurids. They were nomads until they conquered most of India, and had settled in Afghanistan before taking over the subcontinent. Before India, they were located in Kabul.

In fact such thing called Afghanistan did not exist at that time. Afghans are what in India they call them Pathans. They live on two sides of border between Today's Afghanistan and Pakistan. Their name was generalized to all of what is called today Afghanistan by the British in 19th century.

Mughals or Mughuls had nothing in common with Afghans. Babur and his people were from Central Asia. They were Turko-Mongols. When Babur was ousted from Central Asia by his Rivals, Uzbeks, he came to Kabul and established a kingdom there. From Kabul, he then attacked and conquered India. Because He came to India from Kabul, people mistakenly think that he was from Afghanistan.

If you do a internet search on mughal paintings, Im sure you'll find depictions of what they looked like. They didn't look Mongolian. But check out paintings from the Mughal period.
