One should note gradually slow and/or increase tempo like that while practicing. I know that a lot of people do this, but...It does make your tempo a bit wobbly and not as steady as you would want it to.

Instead, start slow to a metronome and then stop, crank up the metronome around 5 beats, and continue for a minute, then repeat.

DO NOT DO WHAT HE DOES GRADUALLY SPEEDING UP AND SLOWING DOWN CAUSES YOU TO GRADUALLY SPEED UP OR SLOW DOWN WHILE YOU PLAY. Just stop and pick up at a new tempo after you have given your muscles some time to grow back(ie next day)

I agree, use a metronome to practice many different tempos but constantly speeding up and slowing down isn't doing anything for your technique or sense of time/pocket. Start slow, play it at that speed for a few minutes, move the metronome up, play at that speed for a few minutes, ad infinum. That is how you will learn technique, control and speed.

Alright,totally agree about the snare sound for teaching beginners, less vibe for clarity. And hey , leave em alone about the arm motion, camman. THe important thing is that it comes from the wrists. How ever nutso you wanna be is all part of what it means to be a drummer! there ARE many better ways to practise this SINGLE and MOST IMPORTANT RUDIMENT IN DRUMS. Take some advice from a teacher, don't try to make beginners feel like shit by telling them that their max speed is very slow.

That is not the best way to improve speed. Find your max bpm, bump it down by 10, and do it for 2 minutes. That increases speed AND endurance.

Don't use all wrist, use a little finger too. Don't choke up on the stick.

Don't act like you know what you're talking about when you don't.

DUDE! Do me a favor! Record the drums with an other mic!... Use your laptop or something to record the audio with an overhead mic, then sync the sucker with Vegas 6 (PC) or Final Cut Express (MAC)...

yep sound is horrible you explain it well, but in noticing your technique esp. when you play it slowly you leave the opposing stick close to the snare as opposed to snaping it back up, this can limit all sorts of things what your doing is more of a technique used for flams or flam taps...
