DOES ANYBODY KNOW IF HOGAN AND BACKLUND HAD A MATCH WHERE BACKLUND WAS IN A BLOODY MESS.I HEARD IN PHILADELPHIA.NOT THIS MATCH.MAYBE I'M WRONG.BUT THATS WHAT I THOUGHT I REMEMBER.
Hogan being the size he was made it unwise to use him in a traditional "wrestling" role. Vince being the evil genius he is, quickly figured this out and used Hogan's natural talents by setting him up in matches against a virtual Rogue's Gallery of monster heels and Hogan's performances against these behemoths made him a superhero in the eyes of his fans. Backlund's legacy can't compare to that.
Backlund was great during his time but I never considered him "My" champion. He just seemed like this goodie two-shoes, big-eared dufus who could really wrestle/grapple. I always wanted Sgt. Slaughter to beat him for the title or for Superstar Billy Graham to take it back because he was so cool. Now when Hogan came along as a face in late 1983, Hulkamania was like a nuclear explosion of charisma and excitement happened and I was at ground zero. I knew then that things would never be the same.
@RAV52 It's funny, I think, when Backlund won the WWF title back in 1994 and then lost it to Diesel, I didn't like the belt on Diesel because I thought he was a dufus; and Backlund was on FIRE at that time, should have held the belt longer!
Bob Backlund and Bruno Sammartino Are the true pioneers of Pro Wrestling and im so disgusted at what WWE has become TNA WAS going bring back Pro Wrestling and make it matter again but Dixie Carter and Jeff Jarret turned TNA into the mirror image of WWE it has no originality anymore. Dammit ill be glad when Ring of Honor goes on in September.
Bob Backlund did wonders for wrestling. So Too did Hulk hogan. Now mcMahonJr. has no one of their caliber at all. All he has now are acrobats and actors; and horror show nightmares.
This match is on the DVD "Hulk Hogan: The Unreleased Collection", but with the dubbed-in voices of Jim Ross and Jerry Lawler as announcers instead of Dick Graham and former Madison Square Garden bigshot Kal Rudman. At one point in this match, watch for Backlund's amazing feat of strength as he lifts Hogan off the mat as dead weight and carries him across the ring and sets him on the top turnbuckle. Backlund was incredibly powerful.
@Bloodsport1 They took this match all around the WWF circuit. I saw them wrestle each other at the Springfield (MA) Civic Center in 1980, and the match was pretty much identical to this one, including Backlund lifting Hogan up while Hogan had a short armscissors on him (just like in this match). He put Hogan on the top turnbuckle and paintbrushed him. When he picked him up, the audience let out one big collective "WTF?" gasp. Strong as hell, that Bob.
@32rodrick Marlon Wayans and Brendan Fraser?? Try again dufus, The Incredible Hulk starred Bill Bixby and Lou Ferigno, Wayans and Fraser were still kids when the show was on
@FerretJohn Yeah Right and Lou Ferringo went on and star in 1982-1986 CBS Cop Show T.J. Hooker which co star Leif Garrett a log with Wendi Richer and Shaun Cassidy

Backlund was a real wrestler - Hulk Hogan was a cartoon character on steroids.

@cschin4 Not really, although Vince wanted Hogan to wrestle in a more showy style, if you watch his work in Japan, he did have some talent.

@elc1960 yup, that was one of Backlund's move. Lifting and carrying his opponents on one shoulder. Man, that is real strength.
