Mariah's voice didn't stand up well considering the amount of performing she did to that point. Her Music Box Tour was 6 dates, Daydream Tour 7 dates, Butterfly 12 dates. Her voice should've held up a little better with that few dates to that point. That's 25 concerts in 5 years. Not to keep dragging Whitney into this but she's 10 times the performer Mariah is. Whitney's first tour was 68 dates, Moment of Truth Tour 153 dates, I'm Your Baby Tonight Tour 101 dates. Then she did The Bodyguard.

I love MC but when I hear performances like these, it makes me cringe a little. But she shoulda sunger softer and tried to extend her head voice down to hit some of the chest range notes. I could be wrong though? But main thing is, after a performance like this, she needed to rest for like 3 days and harldy use her voice. I think all her touring really took its toll on her voice. :(
@devin7048 Mariahs range has actually increased. During her Prime she never demonstrated 5 octaves. After her prime she demonstrated more range. Her head voice increased in range and she demonstrated over half an octave more lower registry and she also belted higher. Her range was not affected by her vocal nodules what was affected was her tonal consistency, her effortlessness and agility and her stamina.

You know what? The way I see it is, Mariah may not still have the voice she used to have, but that's the sacrifice that had to be made for those younger years of phenomenal vocals. Mariah sacrificed her voice to give us legendary albums. I still listen to Emotions and Music Box in my car.
I think Mariah should wear appropriate clothing for different songs. This outfit is good for "Honey" but not good for a ballad. I know it's a concert, but that's why a lot of people were shocked when she first came out with her "new" style. She is singing a gospel-like song with a mini-skirt with a split on the side. Every performer wears the right clothing for the each song. It's about a mood/performance. MJ was one who did right.

unforunately, mariah's voice has indeed diminished a lot over the years... But i wouldn't exclude celine dion on this, because recently she's been lip syncing to re-recorded versions of her songs in her concerts.
You can prove it to yourself if you don't believe me. Find videos of her recent performances and listen carefully. You'll notice that the vocals are the same in each one.

i can't agree more, finally someone who can tell WH has the worse voice of them all. I don't believe it's drugs tho, seriously its a small factor and does nothing to chords or its neuromuscular function. It's her lifestyle, poor chest technique, and genetics (look at her mom, Warwick, franklin). No doubt she was amazing but no longevity of voice.
@JoelPopcountertenor Not only does genetics probably tie into why Celine's voice lasted longer, but I also feel she was smarter about how to sing her songs. Because she underperformed a lot of her songs, and has been lip synching systematically for some time, she was able to save her voice more. But still she wasn't able to keep all of it since she lips a lot more now and sounds pretty shaky when she doesn't.
i hope to never understand why people think using their voice to the full capacity long term makes them lose their voice. I am not a very younger person, in fact i'm barely younger than Mariah and while i don't have posts of what i do live (where i really sing any of the MC, WH, DION) songs, not to mention young mj, i never lost mine. So I guess I don't understand except to acknowledge that women's muscles change as they age due to estrogen decrease. We guys don't go thru that. so i sympathize

They have to deal with labels, go on interviews, plan tours, write songs, deal with countless people. So it's not only using your voice to its full capacity, but a variety of things including lifestyle choices. I'm sure Celine stayed true to vocal practice and doing exactly what her throat doctor told her.
no one claims to by anything i was talking anatomy. I could have pointed out singers like McDonald, Bryson etc who don't lose their voices. You don't have to be an american super star to work your voice off, most stars work so hard w/ no money and deal w/ stress too. They don't have assistants or have millions of dollars so they work two 3 jobs and sing on the road. Also doing long standing vegas shows 5 times a night as a lead has no breaks like a star on a tour. get over it, i've been there
@crazy celine worked w Gould and his team in ny and philly. Both teams i had to go to myself (riley her final coach who was also Clinton's coach to deliver speeches). They did not tell her to save her voice to the extreme, they helped her heal it and protect it and keep her insecurity of losing it in 92. I lost mine to an assault and that team helped me too back in 98. So i KNOW what she was told. Being a full time singer is hard whether you ahd international fame or just a working singer period
@crazy2hazy Celine is crazy about her voice. She does sign language a lot so she doesn't have to talk and apparantly her son and husband know it too. To keep a voice like Mariah, Celine, etc., you pretty much can't have a life or talk too much. That's what a lot of opera singers do.

Women have a disadvantage, as they get older their bodies change, even giving birth w/ higher lvls of estrogen lowers their range. Celine can sing better live and laster longer than the 3 divas of her time (WH, MC, Dion). But I don't perfer her voice, i just acknowledge she had the longevity over the others.
Comparing the two is obviously unfair. Mariah is stiil one of the best singer out there today. Singer like Keri Hilson don't really put on a great stage performance like Mariah. this was around the time that she really could have used a few years off from singing, you could hear it in the courseness of her voice. But fantastic performance nonetheless.
i think her voice is a lot more hoarse compared to her previous performances. everyone keeps saying "shes been singing for 20 years, what do you expect" but the thing is that her voice started getting hoarse in this erra, around 97-98, which is weird cuz her voice was in her prime in 96, so only ONE year later her voice changed drastically? so technically she started getting hoarse 7 years into her career, not 20 lol. still love her tho.. but i must say something happend during/after butterfly
I think you're sorta right. She did get hoarse around this time. But in 2001 that constant hoarseness went away and what she was left with was vocal damage. Her riffing ability was probably at its best at this point.
Also, I think today she sounds very similar to this, only she is a lot older so she doesn't have the stamina to hit those high notes on pitch. She can still hit them if she takes her time, but she has undoubtedly had vocal damage.
i agree... she did get hoarse at this time but she still able to hold notes, but in a deeper pitch, and her vocals werent as smooth as it used to be, but by 2001 her voice was just gone.. but i give her credit because there are some performances in the 2000's where she sounds really well considering she has vocals problems, such as the BET performance of VOL.. it was amazing for her at the time of 2005.
It's not that she started to sing deeper, but her tone got somewhat darker and in some ways that made her sound much more soulful. After 2001, for the most part, she just seemed to be singing differently--she used less of those amazing riffs and usually didn't explore the higher registers, sometimes doing entire performances in her lower registers (like in You and I). Sometimes, though, she can still sound like her "old self", so I think some of it is cuz she changed her singing style.
@crazy2hazy your exactly right! i think alot of it was tommy mottola always wanting her to just be vocal showpiece but then she just didnt want to always be belting in every song, i dont think she ever lost her voice but it got huskier which is normal and she just gets lazy vocally.

yes it was her divorce, cuz Tommy is the 1 who kept her in check. after their divorce Mariah went wild and started drinking and parting a lot. and that can damage your voice. so the actual divorce didnt effect her voice literally, but the after effects did.

@devin7048 Mariahs range has actually increased. During her Prime she never demonstrated 5 octaves. After her prime she demonstrated more range. Her head voice increased in range and she demonstrated over half an octave more lower registry and she also belted higher. Her range was not affected by her vocal nodules what was affected was her tonal consistency, her effortlessness and agility and her stamina.

You know what? The way I see it is, Mariah may not still have the voice she used to have, but that's the sacrifice that had to be made for those younger years of phenomenal vocals. Mariah sacrificed her voice to give us legendary albums. I still listen to Emotions and Music Box in my car.

I think Mariah should wear appropriate clothing for different songs. This outfit is good for "Honey" but not good for a ballad. I know it's a concert, but that's why a lot of people were shocked when she first came out with her "new" style. She is singing a gospel-like song with a mini-skirt with a split on the side. Every performer wears the right clothing for the each song. It's about a mood/performance. MJ was one who did right.

peter, good point. she was oversinging for a long time. definite wear and tear on the voice. if she would just cool it and do whats needed then she'd be ok. it only takes a year to prove to people what you can do vocally. she was oversinging for years after 1990. now look at her. lipping and singing stupid songs with no meaning.

i think the over singing that critics kept on putting her down her would've made her back off. That and the bad reviews on her compositions. However, you gotta give it to MC, she wasn't interested in critics, nor competition from houston. She stayed true to herself and now everyone ever sings lol. For good or for worse, MC being true to herself influenced singing of today. Wish someone worked on her as a live performer because she is a great studio singer.

That's just denial. There's plenty of people who can sing. Beyonce, Leona Lewis, Charice Papenpenco (Or however you spell it), Celine Dion still has maintained dignity in her voice, Christina Agulera... Etc... Mariah was amazing up until 1998. Then after that she had the odd rare amazing performance, but most of them are quite cranky ....

unforunately, mariah's voice has indeed diminished a lot over the years... But i wouldn't exclude celine dion on this, because recently she's been lip syncing to re-recorded versions of her songs in her concerts.
You can prove it to yourself if you don't believe me. Find videos of her recent performances and listen carefully. You'll notice that the vocals are the same in each one.

i can't agree more, finally someone who can tell WH has the worse voice of them all. I don't believe it's drugs tho, seriously its a small factor and does nothing to chords or its neuromuscular function. It's her lifestyle, poor chest technique, and genetics (look at her mom, Warwick, franklin). No doubt she was amazing but no longevity of voice.

@JoelPopcountertenor Not only does genetics probably tie into why Celine's voice lasted longer, but I also feel she was smarter about how to sing her songs. Because she underperformed a lot of her songs, and has been lip synching systematically for some time, she was able to save her voice more. But still she wasn't able to keep all of it since she lips a lot more now and sounds pretty shaky when she doesn't.

i hope to never understand why people think using their voice to the full capacity long term makes them lose their voice. I am not a very younger person, in fact i'm barely younger than Mariah and while i don't have posts of what i do live (where i really sing any of the MC, WH, DION) songs, not to mention young mj, i never lost mine. So I guess I don't understand except to acknowledge that women's muscles change as they age due to estrogen decrease. We guys don't go thru that. so i sympathize

@JoelPopcountertenor Im sorry, but are you claiming to work even half as hard as MC, WH, or CD? Being a superstar is not all glamor and luxury. Singing is probably less than half of it. They have to deal with labels, go on interviews, plan tours, write songs, deal with countless people. So it's not only using your voice to its full capacity, but a variety of things including lifestyle choices. I'm sure Celine stayed true to vocal practice and doing exactly what her throat doctor told her.

no one claims to by anything i was talking anatomy. I could have pointed out singers like McDonald, Bryson etc who don't lose their voices. You don't have to be an american super star to work your voice off, most stars work so hard w/ no money and deal w/ stress too. They don't have assistants or have millions of dollars so they work two 3 jobs and sing on the road. Also doing long standing vegas shows 5 times a night as a lead has no breaks like a star on a tour. get over it, i've been there

@crazy celine worked w Gould and his team in ny and philly. Both teams i had to go to myself (riley her final coach who was also Clinton's coach to deliver speeches). They did not tell her to save her voice to the extreme, they helped her heal it and protect it and keep her insecurity of losing it in 92. I lost mine to an assault and that team helped me too back in 98. So i KNOW what she was told. Being a full time singer is hard whether you ahd international fame or just a working singer period

@crazy2hazy Celine is crazy about her voice. She does sign language a lot so she doesn't have to talk and apparantly her son and husband know it too. To keep a voice like Mariah, Celine, etc., you pretty much can't have a life or talk too much. That's what a lot of opera singers do.

this is true. Don't matter how long you have been singing if you know how to take care of it and if genetics is on your side. Women have a disadvantage, as they get older their bodies change, even giving birth w/ higher lvls of estrogen lowers their range. Celine can sing better live and laster longer than the 3 divas of her time (WH, MC, Dion). But I don't perfer her voice, i just acknowledge she had the longevity over the others.

Comparing the two is obviously unfair. Mariah is stiil one of the best singer out there today. Singer like Keri Hilson don't really put on a great stage performance like Mariah. Mostly because of how hard it is to make their voice sound as good as the recording. She is not what she used to be, but some of that also has to do with age. She is still THE BEST though.

i think her voice is a lot more hoarse compared to her previous performances. everyone keeps saying "shes been singing for 20 years, what do you expect" but the thing is that her voice started getting hoarse in this erra, around 97-98, which is weird cuz her voice was in her prime in 96, so only ONE year later her voice changed drastically? so technically she started getting hoarse 7 years into her career, not 20 lol. still love her tho.. but i must say something happend during/after butterfly

I think you're sorta right. She did get hoarse around this time. But in 2001 that constant hoarseness went away and what she was left with was vocal damage. Her riffing ability was probably at its best at this point.
Also, I think today she sounds very similar to this, only she is a lot older so she doesn't have the stamina to hit those high notes on pitch. She can still hit them if she takes her time, but she has undoubtedly had vocal damage.

i agree... she did get hoarse at this time but she still able to hold notes, but in a deeper pitch, and her vocals werent as smooth as it used to be, but by 2001 her voice was just gone.. but i give her credit because there are some performances in the 2000's where she sounds really well considering she has vocals problems, such as the BET performance of VOL.. it was amazing for her at the time of 2005.

It's not that she started to sing deeper, but her tone got somewhat darker and in some ways that made her sound much more soulful. After 2001, for the most part, she just seemed to be singing differently--she used less of those amazing riffs and usually didn't explore the higher registers, sometimes doing entire performances in her lower registers (like in You and I). Sometimes, though, she can still sound like her "old self", so I think some of it is cuz she changed her singing style.

but you gotta give mariah her props, becuz if you think about it, she did more than most other artists the whole world "looks up to" today. I mean she toured CONSTANTLY, and when she wasn't singing, she was having an interview, and in the interviews she had to have a sparkling personality, etc. and not to mention that her songs are SO dynamic, so yeah singing emotions and VOL every other night is gonna do damage to anyone. It's not a woman singin in one octave like everyone else, she's using 5!
