This is the stupidest video I have ever seen on the political systems. This guy assumes that only the republic has laws?! A true democracy has less freedom than a republic? Hmm. A democracy has no laws? Then what do they vote on? And why does a republic have more freedom? You have a smaller group of people making decisions (by some kind of majority) for all of the people. How is that more freedom? It breaks his authoritarian scale. Less people rule on left, more people rule on right.
Good job keep doing it and take it into the class rooms on their one day of teaching this, but they do not. People elect to voluntarily invade our public schools please. Make the time we are losing our liberty quickly.
First of all America is oligarchy. 1% of the nation who controls 40% of the wealth. The government is owned by business or represent it one way or another (Goldman Suchs CEO was a secretary of treasure, Dick Chaney and to the end of the list). 2. democracy where 51% makes a law or statement that's followed by everybody: if it's every new law, bill or regulation is being voted by people (direct democracy) then any country is far away from it. And it'd be smth that works in anarchy or part of it.
The very idea, that somewhere in the United States of America, people actually believe that Anarchy is a viable alternative to government, is at it's core detestable. The allure of such ideals is the basic concept of freedom, which this nation was founded upon, yet with this freedom comes a responsibility to adhere to a standard of morality. Morality is no longer held in high regard, due to a major shift in the social paradigm circa 1960. This shift has eliminated any hope for Anarchy to prosper
'Laws' protect no one. It is only our agreement to respect others that really keeps us safe. Anarchy would not set one group apart and give them all the power. People would be free to co-operate with each other to implement solutions to societal problems, but without the abuse of power that governments visit on us. The state takes our property under the guise of 'protecting' it. Without a state, market based protection would be cheap and plentiful, and bogus victimless 'crimes' non-existant
Technically Anarchy would have less freedom than a republic. Yes you can do whatever you want, but you would be pretty much confined to your property just in case someone else comes along and takes it and decides to claim it for themselves.
i think there is an error in the picture,in my opinion freedom is a little bit strangulated if anyone can do whatever.that way of thinking may put my freedom in danger.say i want to listen to music in my own yard and my neighbor decides to meditate....who's freedom is gonna win?
@devilu18 What are you talking about? Anarchy is the most free ANY society could be.... The problem with Americans today is too many of us view responsibility as not free... Haven't you ever heard the term "with great freedom comes great responsibility". In a free society you have the "responsibility " to go over to that neighbor and work things out with them. Freedom also means the freedom to fail... So many people have low self esteem they would rather trade freedom for responsibility.
so if i'm a serial killer in your little anarchy and i take the responsibility to clean the town of blue eyes people it's nothing wrong with that according to your way of putting things. please learn why US was conceived as a republic and why a constitution is needed, this kind of problems are not new on the fece of the earth, only we are..
@devilu18 Im not advocating anarchy at all, I believe in laws, and a state, but eventually a mob would form and you would be shot for doing that. That's the responsibility of the free will of the people in the town. I was just trying to put into context the concept of freedom since you didn't understand it :) I didn't say i was for it. I am a libertarian not an anarchist.
I mean an Oligarchy and a Republic are even compatible with eachother. In fact America is now an Oligarchical Republic, by Millionaires for Millionaires, with democratic elections to decide which Millionaires will give all their money to the corporations and banks while allowing them unrestricted access to the nation's resources and allowing them to do whatever they want to the American people.
A constitutional Democracy also has rule of law, and theocracy doesn't necessitate monarchy.
@Threequalseven Yes you are right. A Democrazy with a very good constitution with social thinking people (not communists, but spokesmen who care about the poor and sick). One remark in my country (Belgium) we need a two/Third majority in the parliament for changing a thing in the constitution and 8 years. The guy in clip acts like democracy doesn't have any laws, constitions and principals? The people in the USA are brainwashed to think that the democracy doesn't have laws and eat each other !
WHY DO all Americans think that CONSTITUTIONAL DEMOCRACIES don't EXIST????? Tell me, because this guy thinks he is smart, but at least in my country Belgium. Not all the powers go to 1 man like in the USA (Mr president). We all know that too much power for one human, sucks. The USA is on the good way to Democracy with Obama, but people seriously need more power in the USA. It's fucked up that allmost all off the power of a nation goes 1 person! Why are there only 2 big political parties in USA?
Hahaha, yeah, those right-wing Anarchists. Lol! Listen bud, every self-described anarchist that I know is about as far-left as you can get. Anarchists want to socialize everything, so there's no private property, no government, and no other power structures of any kind. Perhaps you should stop listening to Rush Limbaugh and start looking into other points people's points of view.
Yes, the U.S. is a constitutional representative democratic republic, but your definitions of left and right are reversed. The terms "left" and "right" wing came from the French Revolution. The right wing represented maintaining the monarchy, class hierarchy (royal, noble, freeman, peasant, serf), the church and the divine right of kings as a principle of government. The left wing represented democracy, separation of church and state, equal rights, the rule of law.
@tlfettled Right on, people in the USA are being fooled, In the USA there is no seperation church and law (big WTF), no good proper seperation of powers (because Mr. president has too much power for one man). And two political parties (republicans and democrates) have way too much parties on their own. Why aren't there like 20 political parties. More power divided = less chance of getting oligarchy and/or dictatorship!!! Sorry for the kid who made this video, but he is brainwashed a lot.
@joskes123 First Amendment, Thomas Jefferson commenting on it's purpose mentioned a clear seperation of church and state. Also this guy is factually inaccurate on several points.
A Constitutional Democracy has Rule of Law - This guy doesn't understand democracy or the different kinds of democracy, he only understands the basic majority rule concept
A Republic is compatible with an Oligarchy, both of which may also have rule of law, and still be rule of the elites, as America today
@Laughingblades - I believe this is why this presentation is about the "basics of government." You wouldn't want to complicate things by adding all that detail. Stick to the basics first, the rest will fall in place.
@jenriquez316 Yeah but even as basic forms of government, there's nothing inherently dividing oligarchy from republic, or democracy from rule of law, and a theocracy is not necessarily a monarchy in fact it can be an oligarchy for instance.
@cookiesofamerica And it's used as propaganda to make it seems as though the left-wing is a totalitarian fascist idea and the right-wing believes in complete freedom. What kind of idiot falls for such nonsense? The Glenn Beck kind I suppose.
video has poor production values but your message is correct. This is suppose to be a constitutional republic (which protects individual rights). Direct democracies or representative "majoritarian style" democracies do NOT protect individual rights.
A direct democracy has more freedom than a republic (which is a form of democracy, btw). I would not let kids watch this video to learn about government, sorry dude.
Did you get all of this from Plato? You know he's outdated by 2,000 years, right?
