The Cotton Club Harlem, this is the 1st time this song saw light...very beautiful. I love this version, Ella's, Sinatras, however Lou Rawl's is quiet special =) Bless
Lena Horne's remake is fine, and many think Lena's is definitive, but for me, Lena rented it, and Ethel still owned it. There is some deep blue longing feeling rooted in generations of African-American suffering that aid a deep genuineness to the subject matter, such that this is a demonstrative feeling exercise, and not just a lyrical story reading, that Waters renders. It's hard to express what I mean, but maybe some will see what I'm getting at. Ethel, you always owned it.
I adore this song, so amazing, Ethel Waters was a gem, a pure lovely voice and one that every jazz singer looks to. And I love the vinyl going on, very nice and smooth
This Harold Arlen/Ted Koehler song made such a hit when it was first heard, that on its premier at the Cotton Club by the fabulous Ethel Waters, there was a huge crowd of uptown folks outside the club that night waiting to get in at the extravagant price of $3.00. The joint was jumpin' and musical history was made. Thanks for this absolutely great recording. No discourtesy to the marvelous Lena Horne, but this is priceless.

Thanks for posting this. I wanted a song to be playing in the background of a novel that I'm writing which takes place in 1933, and this is perfect! It got me into the "mood" of the moment by listening to it. :)
How is your novel coming along? I'm a writer too. But I haven't published anything yet. I've only produced a couple of plays, but they are very expensive.
I am also writing a novel taking place in the 1930s and have been browsing music of that time frame and I ran across this video and your comment! I hope all goes well with your book! (and thanks to cdbpdx for posting) :)
@wasabiluver I actually have the teaser trailer for the book over on my channel's page. Once it's closer to the actual release, I'll be doing another trailer showing off some of the artwork, which is going to be amazing! :)
This is a re-release of the original recording. It was first sung at The Cotton Club by Ethel Waters in 1933 and her 1933 recording was the first.
"Ethel Waters recording of the song in 1933 was inducted in the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2003, and the Library of Congress honored the song by adding it to the National Recording Registry in 2004." (from Wikipedia)
reminds me of fallout

She introduced it and no one ever sang it better than the one and only Miss Ethel Waters - the depth of feeling is remarkable.

Great rendition. I am reading Donald Bogle's bio of her, I didn't know this was her signature song before the Horne version.
