  • I too have power tool pangs :-)

  • You are natural. We should join forces, as they say - "Give it time".

I believe in a speck of dust frozen in an ice cube, what do you believe in?

  • I work as a cleaner and last Thursday one of the managers threw out three notepads UNUSED and a wad of paper 6 inches thick UNUSED. I asked if I could have it and took it home. Such god damned waste.

  • Many people seem to think of cloth nappies as being old fashioned and a lot of hassle when those presumptions really couldn't be further from the truth. Please don't disregard something without researching it first.

  • i know you've probably finished this but did you consider picking up a free Metro?

  • I grow my own stuff alot Iv got a shed load of cucumbers if ya want em :-)

  • I used towelling nappies ( they were given me) and knitted wollen nappy wraps...worked a treat :)

  • I know where you're coming from with the smoking thing, I'm just the same.

  • I certainly have to congratulate you on not buying the power screwdriver kit and newspaper, I would have most likely had to buy the screwdriver set at 1/4 its original price as I do love a bargain. :)

  • How is it going?? Are you still working on the garden?

    TopVeg

  • Wool nappies. Jesus.

  • haha killed the moth "bit brutal wasnt it" hah

i love your voice i would listen to it all day!

  • Why don't you just read newspaper articles online? (print them out if you have to).

  • well done for not buying the drill. Good on you

  • how much do you think it would cost to engineer and create a advanced mechanism that could mimic and fly like a moth and if it did exsist would we squash it? no but cos its a real one and alive ,,,bye buddy! splat! :P

  • I've not been able to watch this vid yet (am in India where the connection speed is surprisingly fast but where there seems to be a dearth of sound cards), but I gather from others' comments that you're not buying loo roll? I think it's a good idea - you can't use loo roll most places in India (and I imagine other places worldwide too) because of the rubbish drains, and it seems a billion Indians are getting on just fine...

  • Were those black & white Canada Geese calling in the background at about 1 min into this vid, or do all geese sound like that? Sorry. Those are the ones that dominate Michigan, so that's the only kind whose call I recognize.

  • I work for a company called wyecycle-community re-cycling. I would say this project needs to be adopted a a lifelong commitment-otherwise it is merely a westerner demonstrating the luxury and fad of "making do" as oppose to the life long alterations we all need to make to alter the future environmentally and socially!

    love to all xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

  • I totally agree with you, but we've all got to start somewhere. We have adopted a great many of habits you refer to for many years, i.e buying locally, re-cycling, composting, but also know we are in a priviledged position to be able to do this with relative ease

  • Yum! Strawberries are my favourite fruit or one of them! Are they hard to grow? Seems your other veg is still trying to grow too but they will be great when grown.

Love the idea of making do Robert, but what if you have a burning temptation to buy something? I couldnt make do on anything, I'm a compulsive buyer! I buy things for the sake of it!

  • poor little bugger XD! no toilet paper, and wool pampers... WOW. ineed that is a brave family, i couldnt last like that, not stong enough :/

  • Kill the moths, they ate a hole in my nice grey jumper and my red scarf.

  • poor moth

  • murderer :-)

  • I can understand not buying new things like cameras or televisions or computers but food or toilet paper? Robert are you kidding me? is this guy serious? thats pretty crazy i couldnt do that i could probibly go a year without buying anything new but toilet paper or food thats over the edge know what i mean?

  • That's a very tidy allotment, Robert. Actually, would you call that an allotment? I'm not sure you would, to be honest. But anyway, whatever it is, it's a very tidy one.

The reason I say this is because this fact jumped straight out at me after literally a couple of seconds into this vid. I'm used to working on my kung fu instuctor's allotment, which is an utter mess at the best of times, although I like to think I helped clear it up a bit. Probably not much though.

  • Anyway, that dude in America sounds somewhat insane. Surely he's going to (or has already) develop some sort of rash from not using tissue paper. I mean, it's bad enough in public toilets when you have to use the toilet roll there; it's always hard and uncomfortable. Then again,I guess we are all just used to the 'luxury' of toilet paper that doesn't cut your bottom to ribbons.

  • Howdy Bob, Nice shed. The simond10 idea about Freecycle sounds like it may be right up your ally. It would be neat to see some like minded people from your community.

  • you are consuming youtube. Kind of far fetched I guess.

  • i'm on a similar quest, and one thing that put my mind at ease is the idea that simplifying your life unfolds over time, bit by bit, and that once you are on the road, it has its own progression. i often like to think how much simpler my life will be five years from now! thanks for the visit

  • I like the idea behind your Making Do series but I'm afraid I cannot join you. For I... AM A CONSUMER! Yes, a consumer, your mortal enemy! We consumers shall consume until there's nowt left, we're going down fighting and we're taking you with us!! :)

  • Good job on resisting it. Really good to hear you're still going strong with this :D

  • Hey Rob, check out freecycle, it may be helpful for you this year.

"Freecycle is the process of giving away or 'recycling' your unwanted items. The main rule of the Freecycle movement is that everything is given away, or taken away for free. Freecycle began in mid 2003 and there are over one million members worldwide. In the UK there are over 60 Freecycle groups and the Freecycle group in Kensington and Chelsea has nearly 450 members."

  • That was cool how you edited that all together. I enjoyed it. I bet u use macs ey? what do you use to edit?

  • Yesss, the first to watch this video.. So i must coment..:D.. Good luck for the 9 months Bob, i am looking forward to next year, to see how you will feel when you can go into a store and buy anything, i think that even you might be suprised on how you will feel..It will be interesting..

  • No matter how hard one tries, somebody else always does what you can do better than you can. It's quite humbling when you think about it.

  • Another great installment! Keep up the good work. I can see you getting your own series on the BBC with this stuff.

  • hi bobby, you know you didnt strike me as an allotment type of guy but it looks alot neater than the ones ive seen anyways im gana check out that No Impact Man thing mate

  • well done on resisting the drill your a bigger am then me hehe big fan mr rob hope u make it thoruth the year

  • Cheers!

  • Hey nice vidoe, but I noticed something. It goes from strong shadows/strong sun to almost no shadow and no sun at around 3:42 and then it changes back at around 4:08. Was that just a cloud covering from the sun ?

  • hey man keep up the good work and thatmoth got OWN3D like a little bitch

  • I don't know that I could do what you're doing. This year I've bought a video camera,CDs, DVDs, cloths etc. Power to you!

DVDs - can you rent them? You're not buying them right?

  • They'll have a better one on sale next year.

  • You could have composted that poor moth!

  • im gonna pause this because this is late in the evening. Robert imy friend are u sticking to your one hour slot still?
