  • i think though she is a wonderful singer/performer i am not sure i like her much in this rendition

  • I love her and her voice but she puts emphasis at the weirdest places! And the way she changes her voice at random parts of the songs is also weird but it's how she sings, you may think it's yelling/mixing truth is it's her voice it's how she does it so why pick at it it's not like we're experts!

  • I wish I could "yell" like that with full vibrato and tone. Sure, she sounds a pinched in some places, but most parts she certainly isn't yelling.

  • Here's the thing- Eden isn't BELTING she is YELLING. Singing super super super high in your chest voice doesn't classify as "belting" unless you are doing it right, because if you do it wrong, that's called yelling. Eden can hit the notes but it doesn't sound like a true "belt" it sounds like a yell to hit the notes. Barely any of her notes sounds mixed. All I hear is either pure head or yelling in her chest voice.

  • we get it.......you can sing high.......you and every other girl.

  • I don't hear any belting, just head voice and mixing. What happened to belting? Check out Betty Buckley, now that is belting!

  • beautiful..

  • it was mediocre until the last note, then it was shit.

  • I felt like ive just been pumched in the mose with a belt (pun intended)

  • we get it eden, you can sing high

  • it is depressing that this horrid yelling and screaming on pitch gets airtime or an audience's attention at all

  • this did nothing for me.

  • Eden can sure belt a song....but I think this song calls for a softer approach, tempting as it is to go over the top...sometimes less is more.

  • A tad too much vebrato but still really good. And she always comes with her Eden flare haha makes it more interesting. And I agree, Patti lupone was amazing at this too

  • Wow - Can she SCREAM !! (but I'd rather have her help catching a Cab than singing)

  • I think you've all been to harsh. She's very stick with the written tune other than the end note i think she did this song great justice. I agree her belt is very strong, and that at some points a little less would have been nice, but this was a great performance.

  • Ouch. Way to destroy the nicest part of the song by r i f f i n g. Stick to Wicked, where riffing is "cool".

  • wow.

  • Dear Darcy,

I'm singing this in the cabaret tomorrow. I won't sound like this; don't get your hopes up.

    Love, Heather.

  • @oldmanhasler Dear Heather, You sounded absolutely fabulous. so shut your face! kay thanks bye! <3

    Love, Darcy.

    arm slaps. ;)

  • Eden is a great actress, yes.but vocally her placement is all over the place..pushing in places where she should be mixing, it's just too much. I am not fan of the taking of liberties with melody either, unless of course you're a fierce R&B singer. Listen to Sara Ramirez sing "Meadowlark" , she is a fantastic R&B singer with an amazing belt and yet she stays true to the melody and her placement is always high and light; and sounds COMPLETELY inspired and effortlessly awe-inspiring.

  • I know! I have no problems with her acting and the voice itself is lovely. Her technique is the issue. It's pretty concerning. This is why Liz Callaway's version still stands supreme to me. She knows exactly how to place her voice and the audience then doesn't have to stress about whether or not she's gonna make it. Sara's in the same boat. Brilliant. Natalie Weiss is a newcomer who does the same. Hopefully we'll see more of that.

  • You haven't lived 'til you've seen the original Patti Lupone perform this live.

But Eden did a great job on a very hard song. Like I said in my last comment, she got a bit too ambitious on the last notes.

  • eden is theater. theater is just a medium for people to hear great voices

  • it's called vibrato.

  • I thought that she did an AMAZING job on the song. It my have been meant to be sang one way and maybe it would have sounded better if she sang it another way but WHO CARES?!?!?! She is just singing the song, she isnt acting in the musical. I think that because of that, her interpretation is ok... She made the song more interesting for me because some parts were unexpected. I say, just praise her for being a great vocalist...we all know there is a lack of those...

  • I adore her talent and there is no question that she is a vocal powerhouse. HOWEVER, this song is beautiful and perfect the way it was written. Her vocal gymnastics took away what otherwise would have been a superlative rendition of a masterpiece of a song. Watch Alice Ripley's performance at a staging of The Baker's Wife in New Jersey. Alice Ripley's version was truly artistic. Eden's was way over the top and, actually, painful to listen to towards the end.

  • You know, this is such a great song and I have yet to see a rendition that I think does it justice. I too am not a fan of the "vocal pyrotechnics" Ms. Espinosa pulls out and would prefer emphasis on the story i.e. appreciating every word. The high note at the end also seems a bit out of place.

  • I totally agree. It would have been superlative if Eden stuck with the music as it was written. She killed the bird with that last note! What an agonizing rendition!

Eden, don't ruin your voice doing unnecessary acrobatics with it. Also, please respect the music.

  • You don't think Liz Callaway nails this one? I think she sings the perfect rendition of this piece. Eden is good, but could learn a thing or two about interpreting a piece from Ms. Callaway.

  • This is a prime example of my problem with Ms. Espinosa, she just does too much. She has an amazing voice, but people write their music the way that it should be sang. When you riff and add all of the high notes, you loose something. It then just becomes "look at how high I can sing, I'm fabulous!" It's no longer about the music or the story!! Those people aren't clapping for the music or the story it tells, they're clapping for her voice, and that is NOT what theatre is about.

  • That's what it's about in Wicked.

    : )

  • No, it's not. And that's the problem with people. There's so much more than that, even with Wicked. There's a STORY, a MESSAGE. And the person singing and conveying that message shouldn't put their voice in front of that story and message. That's selfish, and as an artist you NEVER put yourself before an audience. If you do or are, then get out of the business of theatre and go into the record industry.

  • that's why i love eva cassidy :) she always did what was best for the song instead of what showed off her voice the most

  • she's fabbbyyy, she does scream a bit but i still think she's greeeeat, her portrayal's greeeeat. love it.xx

  • Adding to this chain a little late...but whoever said this song is already "showy" is absolutely right. Eden's got plenty of talent and doesn't need to work this darn hard. I did, however, like her going up higher than written at the end-- it really was unexpected and thrilling. I just wish that had been the only vocal trick she did. Neither she nor the song need much embellishment.

  • I love Eden, and I love this song...but I don't think Eden's voice is fit for this song. I think it fits a more classic Broadway voice. I prefer Calloway and LuPone on this song

  • okay. first things first. FATandHOMO: shes fabulous, you cant really see her face great here and i just saw her close, rent- she can act and sing her ass off. i dont see you as leads in how many broadway shows? and everyone else- if she wants to belt higher than the song goes- whos gonna stop her? shes fierce. dont hate on eden just cause she can riff higher than you ever will be able to. and obviously- if she was cast as almost every good leading broadyway role- she knows how to act. so shush.

  • wow...that was totally unnecessary. I love eden too, but calling them fat and homo is going way too far. If u think that eden would ever respect u for that, ur wrong.

  • Lol, starfish was actually responding to the comment that "FATandHOMO" left. That was the guy's youtube name. If you look down a couple comments, it's right there. =)

  • i kno! i'm sry! realized that after i posted it. ooops! : )

  • This is a classic example of doing *too much.* The song is already showy enough; there's no reason to add even higher notes. Totally unnecessary. You just end up looking posery. That said, Eden's a serious talent. She just needs to bring the audience *to* her, rather than work so hard.

  • Good voice, but the acting she does is bad in everything.....she never understands anything she is singing or saying....

  • i can't get over how much i love this....yeah, i wish she didn't belt the ending like that cuz it's pitchy and sounds painful, but still- this is AMAZING for the most part. she's made this one of my very favorite songs.

  • This must have been a bad night for her. Her vibrato is way out of control!! It goes to show you- even an amazing singer has an "off" night. Nobody's perfect!

I saw her in "Wicked" and she was astounding! and "Brooklyn" really shows her chops, too. Just listen to "Once Upon a Time" (is that the name of it)?

  • Horrible. A good singer doing a bad version of a great song.

  • Too bad she got a tad pitchy toward the end, with all the belting notes.

But man, I loved it anyway.

  • One may have had to have been there live or to have done this herself to know how great this is. For having one piano, one microphone, one brick wall, and people drinking and walking around, the environment is probably better suited for stand-up instead of a concert. Espinosa transcends the limitations of the room and this website with an unique and powerful rendition of the song. After Buckley, Brightman, Calloway, Ripley and Lupone, that's quite a feat.

  • i think eden did a phenomenal job but i think Steph's has more heart in it

  • i like eden, but i wouldnt say this is the best rendition of this song. it probably sounded better live. she still did a good job though. :)

  • great song, eden is a powerhouse with this song, great job eden, thanks for posting

  • i bet it sounded great live, but it honestly is not translating well here.

  • I LOOOOOVE this soo much!!

  • i actually love it, watching her makes it so much better, i heard a recording and it wasnt my fav. shes such a great actor

  • I'd like to see you do half of what she does.

  • What is it about this version that ''ruins it'' as you say?

  • the fact that she is screaming 3/4 of the song, there's no phrasing whatsoever. I'm not saying I can do it better, but I am entitled to my opinion green girl. Get over the fact that no matter how much you defend someone, there will always be someone with the total opposite opinion of yours. I respect yours, now respect mine. Not agree.

  • YOU PLAYED IN WICKED!!!

  • So, um... Is it bad to say that was too much? I liked her performance of it (most of it was amazing) but other parts. Just stop the craziness and sing the song with your own flavor... Just not that much. But overall, great!

  • beautiful.

  • Eden is amazing. There's no doubt about it. She's one of a kind, and her interpretation of this song (and any song, for that matter) is beautiful. At the same time, however, Liz Callaway is the one who truly touches this gorgeous piece with the necessary tenderness to move listeners to tears and is the one that breathes life into "Meadowlark"'s intricacy and complexity and masters this kind of storytelling.

  • Gee...I love Eden's Wicked stuff...but this is not very good...interpretation is choppy...she doesn't move the piece forward...she keeps pulling it back with these wierd ways of starting the note...

  • HATE the last note, too rockerish takes away from the character of the song... but other than that really liked her styling of the song.... great vocals.

  • I am with you on this! To sing this song well to begin with with takes great vocal chops. And most people who think they can sing this probably shouldn't be. Eden takes wonderful risks. Just a note for all of the aspiring performers out there, if you don't take risks you will never make it.

  • eden is amazing i have a recording of her singing this song somewhere else and its amazing (even better than this one)

and i say if u have go the gift u might aswell use it!!

and she had just taken a week off wicked with a sore throat anyway but i can hardly tell anyway!

    i <3 eden!

  • OMG. Can you please post or send me your recording of it? PLEASE!

  • yeah sure are u into trading? but dont worry if ur not lol we can sort somthing out!

do u wanna message me back on my youtube page:) but for now i will put it up on youtube i i can get the comp to work:)

  • What the hell did she do to this song?

Lots of great comments floating around here.

    She's very talented.

    Major mis-step this evening.

  • This goes into the category of belting higher and higher is better. She has a gifted voice, but she needs to learn to connect that to emotional truth and not vocal gymnastics. Who cares that she belts or mixes an e of f. She needs to practice MAJOR restraint. All of the show queens and casting directors are going to tell her she is amazing because she can belt so high. The long range prognosis for her is bleak.

  • Before we listen to this major b___ s___ you expound, lay out your credentials for us. Eden Espinosa is awesome!

  • Stephen Schwartz was the accompianist in this video. Duh!

  • radish95, I agree with you. I'm worried about her vocal health too. She needs to mix more and belt less. I'm sure it would feel much better for her, and it would sound much better.

  • So true... there are way too many people out there who approach singing like the pole vault; i.e, higher is better. Eden can hit high notes, but there's a difference between hitting a note and singing it. And just because she CAN hit a note doesn't mean she SHOULD. Her top notes sound strained, shrill, and just all-around ugly. It's a shame. I had heard so many fabulous things about her performance in Brooklyn, and then I saw her in concert at Town Hall in Oct 2005 and was so disappointed.

  • To me the very reason why we sing, why we dance, why we do any art form is for the love of it. Technique is there for us to fall back on and we do the technique because we love what we do and want to make it better. A performer lacking passion is no performer at all. Eden has a brilliantly gifted voice and anyone who cannot hear that is deaf. She may not do everything technically perfectly but she sings with her heart. Extremely evident in this very performance. AMAZING

  • I really like this she really took it made it her own. She's not vocally perfect, but quite frankly I will watch a great actress who isn't vocally perfect but really makes the song come aliveanyday over somone who sings perfectly but lacks passion

  • SO fierce.

  • I like this a lot. You people need to chill. Like you could do better.

  • Question. Why comment, if you don't like it? You're just setting standards for people. I think she did an awesome job, all around.

  • good lord, she butchered it.

    poor song.

    may it rest in peace.

  • I got goosepimples :)

I have a version of her on my computer singing this, but this version is much better! Though she is a bit shouty. Still amazing though :)

  • I agree with clarktoo! She's done this song before, and a lot better than this. This is what happens when you smoke copious amounts of pot, silly!

  • And does Eden smoke pot?

  • I'd read it before in several places (Broadwaysecrets, mostly)... it seems to be the consensus.

It's obvious that she's doing SOMETHING to make her voice sound... well, wonky. When you compare this to how she sounded on Broadway, there's a definite difference in quality. It sounds, to me, like she's been smoking something... either that or she's been sick... in California.

  • I saw her in Wicked in the Pantages and I have heard the recordings of her on broadway in the part and I think she sounded better... She is fantastic, she may just have been having a wierd evening. I agree that the crazy high belt sounded wierd, but as a trained singer, I can vouch that if you have been singing repetively strenuous music(Elphaba)that focus on your hard pallet is what you better be doing to give your voice a reprise.

  • good lord her voice is so out of control. and not in a good way. you never know whats gonna happen when she sings. blah.

  • Her vibrato is out of control in this song!!!!! She's very Hit or Miss. This is a Miss. It's too dramatic TOO soon. There is no where to go(dramatically) after the first minute. Acting is off. Not truthful, just a lot of waving of the hands. This song doesn't need that. Too harsh sounding when she doesn't know what to do.

She has a big fan base at this point, she gets work from that. Not because she's great.

  • i agree clarktoo! that's a lot of excessive vibrato AND unecessary belting. this should have NO crazy chest belting. and as a result, she was flat many times! but she's done better!

  • she really tends to eat the mic.

  • fan fucking tastic!
