Hi ch252525, I gues I belong to the Romantics. I grew up with Liszt, Beethoven, Mozart, Chopin, Rachmaninoff and also ofcourse Ravel and Debussy. Villa-Lobos has very nice music, he was a wanderful composer, ofcourse he is not like those modern Russians.
im not talking about the importance of this piece alone, but about the importance of such a composer as Villa-Lobos was. Brazilians in general tend to have the "Síndrome do Vira-Lata", a complex of inferiority in which we tend to underestimate what comes from and represents our culture and to do the opposite towards the western culture in general. Life is not clear, formal or organized in Brazil, why should one expect our music to be like that}
Had Villa=Lobos been north-american or european he would for sure be considered a composer of the same level and importance of Stravinsky or Schoenberg. But the reality is that many books about XX century music simply say nothing about him. I believe it is a matter of time until his music be valued what it's really worth. It is perfectly understandable why does this happen, since his music reflects a socio-cultural environment totally apart from western culture.
This piece of music was dedicated to Arthur Rubinstein, now I understand why he never play it. Its to loud and I cant understand any thing, the same thing could happened to Rubinstein.

@SordidGuy Relax, he's just saying that this isn't the hardest piece for piano, he never said that he can play it. It's like someone who can't play piano viewing a Fur Elise video and commenting that "well, this is quite a difficult piece, but not the hardest" (not suggesting of course that shikamaruxb3 can't play the piano!). Is there anything wrong with someone saying that comment? And for your information, this is DEFINITELY NOT the hardest piece to perform, Alkan's concerto is much harder!
@SordidGuy Saying something is "not the hardest piece to perform" is not a critique. Besides, technique does not by any means show one's level of understanding of a musical composition. It's like saying I should be a movie star before I can say this or that movie sucks.
It is one of my favourive 20th century avant-garde pieces, together with Prokofiev's sonata 7 Finale and Orstein's Suicide In The Airplane. I composed many sheets of literary poems in Russian (I'm from Moscow) while listening to this masterpiece. And the cycle of those avant-garde and weird poems with few rationality was called... "Madmen. Rudepoema"!
6:33 - 6:58 game me CREEPS as strong as the terrible Threnody for the Victoms of Hiroshima by Pencerecki!
Also, for those below discoursing upon Rubinstein's inadequacies etc.: Villa-Lobos wrote this as a musical representation of Rubinstein. He said, when he gave Rubinstein the score, something like: it is you, and me; we are both savages! Rubinstein never strove to make this technically perfect, for it is not the musical intent. This was meant to be a work through which Rubinstein could express himself. It is our "faults" which distinguish us.
Interestingly however, Rubinstein didn't like the piece too much, and honestly his technique was apparently not enough to pull this mammoth of a work off. Rudepoema is extremely difficult and its really rarely performed. The few that attempt it struggle through the work and rob the listener of perhaps a more realistic "jungle-like and primitive" experience.
Fortunately Hamelin has what it takes it; I'm happy when he records something, he plays it intelligently and very well.
I don't think that Arthur Rubenstein couldn't play this piece because his technique wasn't good enough. Roberto Szidon and Arthur Moreira Lima , two Brazilian pianists, have recorded the Rudepoema. They are good pianists, but don't have best tecnique than A. Rubenstein.
Not the best recording ive heard, but still..... this piece is insane, in an brilliant, musical way.

Actually, "Rudepoema" is considered the hardest music in the world! Even Rubinstein had problems to play it! How villa-lobos were able to do that?
shikamaruxb3 1 year ago
@shikamaruxb3 haha this is definitely not the hardest piece to perform, though that certainly doesn't detract from the musical merit of the piece

I think to have studied the "Bona" isn't enough to solve the rhythmical problems of this composition. :o)

Never in my mind I thought that Rudepoema had sonata form, or quasi sonata form, as written above in the information about the video.

Hamelin is a monster! Maybe Gibbons and Libetta and Pogorelich can tackle this work. Rubinstein... probably not.
