Sterling example of how graphics don't make a better game. Got this for the PS2 and was very bored, whereas the Sega CD version is one of my favorite 16-bit games (and shooters) of all time
One of the reasons I love shmups so much is the intensity and size of the fight.A good Shmup never disappoints in there enemy types. The boss at the beginning are always huge and makes you drool in anticipation on how big the final boss is going to be.
I played this thing so many times i ended up being able to clear stage 4 without taking damage. Yes, that is sad, especially considering by the time you get to that point, you want to cry when you get your ass handed too you on the next stage, beat it tho, no cheats, I enjoyed this game alot.
Still one of my favourite shumps on the PS2, it dosen't do anything spectacularly new, but its polished game, looks great and is a decent challenge. Only thing that ain't very good is the music.
Did everyone else here buy an alternate, better version of the shit game I bought with the same name? Because I owned this and it, along with Giga Wing Generations, was the worst shmup I've ever played (and I've played a few).
Perhaps you'll enjoy this if you've never played one before, but this game was horrendous. It was so boring that I played it on hard mode and I ended up turning it off near about about the 10th level because it was so easy and boring.
This game was so awesome i used to play it way back but it was so damn difficult i probably only got past level one then died still a great classic though 10/10
I just bought it (for 3 bucks^^) and I'm wondering if there's no possibility to save and restart from the stage you saved on? It's really frustating having to replay all stages.
Oh my god I still remember playing this game back in 2001 I still remember having so much fun with it. I can't believe it's been such a long time since I played this...I always found it difficult but I had hours of fun playing it on the ps2, amazing game.
Yeah without cheating, the farthest I ever got was the 4th stage but couldn't beat it. It took me tons of tries to beat the 3rd stage though. I think that's why used versions of this game are everywhere. People got pissed off, said "fuck this" and sold the game haha.
For such a short game, it has a huge spike in difficulty later. The first two stages are easy enough, but the game starts getting serious from Level 3 and onward.
This was the only Silpheed game I played, though I admit the Sega CD prequel looks pretty fun. I do like the PS2 sequel's presentation, right down to the chatter of the pilots. (Despite some really goofy dialogue.)
$5? Awesome, I got this game a while back for $10 at Wal-Mart. It was the only one there, not sure why a game like that would be at Wal-Mart but who cares? It's fun!
Hehe, amazingly, this was one of the first PS2 games that came in the US, released in May of 2001. One of the best early games ever for a system.

Did you ever play the original on PC-8801 or the Sega CD version?

Good grief is the radio chatter annoying. Is there an option to turn this off, as otherwise it could be a 1/2 decent game from the looks.
wartax5 2 years ago
Weird....I LOVE the chatter! It adds to the space dogfight. Its really well made vertical polygon shooter.
Grooveraider 2 years ago 2
I agree with grooveraider. Besides the radio chatter was a main part of the game, if ya ever read the back of the case the game came in.

Graphics-Spectacular! 10/10.
Music and Sound-Amazing! 10/10.
Controls-Responsive and smooth. 10/10.
Challenge-Will kick your ass and make you ask for seconds. 10/10.
Replayability-Shit, yeah. 10/10.
Final Grade-A+.
This may quite possibly be the perfect PS2 game.
NinjaGhostScorpion 2 years ago
Shit on Challenge alone this game gets a 10. This is by far one of the hardest console shmups in existence.
Artificialraven 2 years ago
@Artificialraven Ikaruga begs to differ.

@Artificialraven Any bullet hell shooter for console kicks this games ass.
It's really not that hard until the last stage and even that is relatively easy.
Though the game did kick ass :p

I watched to 1:21 and then I placed an order for the game on Amazon.
I love vertically-scrolling shooters, and there's a distinct lack of them in North America, at least on PS3. We need more.
Luckily I have a PS2, and this will be my second VSS for it (other one is Raiden III). Are there others? I just got my PS2 not long ago.
Also, it's not a vertical game, but Astro Tripper is pretty awesome, if you have a PS3, it's only $4.99 to download.

This game's graphics are VERY IMPRESSIVE knowing the fact its from 2000, even in 2008, its still very good.
Aargh, I can't get past stage 6's first boss, the stage itself is so frustrating.
Game is easy in the first 2 stages, but then it becomes the hardest game I have ever played. *Sigh* Too bad ill never beat this game...
fightingplace 3 years ago
If anything, this game wins at graphics. It's AWESOME. 'coarse, that's a given since it was made by Treasure.
