they have gills, they need water to breath, but they can survive for a while out of water. Smaller species can get stuck in tide pools where the oxygen gets depleted and last until the tide comes in. I saw one crawl away and swim off a boat after being on deck for over half an hour. This one was out only for a few minutes.

I think there is if it's out of water for a long time, but octopuses in alot of aquariums have been found to escape and have a walk round, open other aquarium doors and eat the crabs inside, then go back to their tank and close it. They are probably the most willing to learn and most intelligent of all creatures.

Creepy and cool. Most freaky in that it seemed the octopus was figuring out how to crawl in real time -- and it climbed that learning curve awfully fast.
