@scott93257 The 262 was mid seventies Monza, it had unique bore and stroke and only was made 75-76. Chevy tried again in the late seventies with a 267, that had the stroke of the 350 but a 3.5" bore. Both of those engines were supposed to meet fuel economy and emission standards of the day but only made around 120 horsepower. The 305 took both of their places and with more horsepower depending on year anywhere from 145 with 2 barrel up to 220 or so in Camaro Tuned Port Injected versions.
@arc00ta Then they dropped the 262 after a year or so. Chevy came out with the 267 for 1979, with the stroke of the 350 and a 3-1/2" bore. Both those engines were intended for low emissions and good fuel economy but the 305 ended up serving in their place after the early 80's. Olds had a 260, Ford a 255 during the late 70's and Chrysler never went under 318 cui except for the Slant Six after the 60's.
Had never heard of the 262 and I should have...Was manufacture just two years from 1975 to 1976, yet did appear in some yearly model Pontiac Ventura's...4.3 liter with 3.67" bore and a scant 110 hp...Some v6's has the same 4.3 liter displacement..So it was a gas saving, low hp v8...For what you did here, I would have used the v6, but nice build...
Are you out of you mind? This engine in a lawn tractor is quite excessive. You just don't need that much power period. You are wasting resources and endangering everyone on the planet with that thing. You could have gotten along fine with a twincam V6 engine, or a supercharged 4 cylinder pratt and whitney airplane engine.
That is very neat! I've never seen a heavily modified mower that still has a working cutting deck on it. Coolest sounding lawn tractor in your area I'm sure!
@Camopar87 dunno how he did it...but id take a manual transmission clutch bellhousing and the input shaft from trans to slide into clutch...fabricate a bearing carrier at the back of bellhousing and run belt from there to mower deck and wheels. makes me wanna find me an old flat head 8
@rednoseroxy Oh get off your high horse. There are enough self-rightous assholes in the world already that make fun of America to fit in and feel cool.
.. something I could do with my 305 when it's pulled from my truck, lol! I have an old murry lawn tractor. I'm sure I can 'redneck' it in there somehow XD
Haha I gotta admit this is so bad-ass....and probably the best use in the world for an underpowered 262 V8 Chevy engine. Even if it's only 115 hp, I'm sure it's gotta be a little rocket on a riding mower.
The 1975-1976 262 was a 262 cu in (4.3 L) 90° pushrod V8 with an iron block and heads. Bore and stroke were 3.67 in (93 mm) by 3.10 in (78.7 mm). Power output for 1975 was 110 hp (82 kW) and 195 lb·ft (264 N·m) at 3600 rpm. The 262 was underpowered and was replaced by the 305 the following year.
osteologation is correct, the 262 was the smallest small block that Chevy has ever made. They only made them for 2 years, 1975 and 1976 and they only were available in 2 cars, the 1975 Nova and the 1975 and 1976 Monza. Hence they're not a very well known engine, other than by the small block gurus who think nothing more of them other than a boat anchor.
But in this case, I have to admit this is probably the best use of a 262 cube V8.
262 was only available in 1975 and 1976 on Novas and Monzas. The 305 is what replaced the 262 V8.
Of note, a 262 V8 is a 4.3 liter. However another 4.3 liter, the V6 model that is well known in full size trucks, S-10's, Blazers, Monte Carlos, El Caminos and Astros, was introduced in 1985, and later a new 4.3 V8, which is a 265 cube engine was introduced on the mid 90's Caprices.
It's actually both; back in the mid 70's Chevy decided to add a new economy V8 engine and came out with the 262 V8 for 1975. Then for whatever reason they came out with a new economy engine, the 305 in 1976. Then the 262 V8 was dropped for the 1977 model year.
A new 262, the V6 version, came out in 1985. The 262 V6, aka "4.3 liter" has nothing to do with the old 262 V8 except it has the same amount of cubes from 2 less cylinders...and more power than the old V8 version had.
A 262 V8 was never an option for a truck. The 262 V6 was but it didn't come along until 1985. The 283 was last used in trucks in 1967. A 283 does get better fuel economy but it doesn't always have more power than the 350 does. And as mentioned the 262 V8 was only used in 1975-76 on Monzas and Novas.
283 was an option in 76-81 for trucks look it up i know a guy that has on in his 79 chevy c10 he gets better gas milage and the torq horsepower specs are the same as a 350 2bolt main i have some charts
I have looked it up....76-81 trucks you could get a 4.1 which is a 250 inline 6...or you could get a 5.0 which is a 305....or you could get a 5.7 which is a 350....and up until 1980 you could get the 6.6 which is the 400.
Also the 283 made at best, 220 hp stock and that was the hi-po versions. Most 283's were 195 hp. Yes some 350's of the late 70's only made like 170 hp, which is why I said a 283 "doesn't" always have more power than a 350....sometimes yes but often times no.
i never under stood why they made the low power 350s then theres the high power one the 350 4bolt main i think its model N or M? i have it in my truck its supposed to push 330HP and 380FT lbs of torq at 3600RPM im not sure about the RPMS but the factory recomended is 3600 and i dont take it over 4 grand mostly but i have gotten it to 8grand be4
Actually Chevy did make a 262 V8 Engine in the mid to late 70's. You usually saw them in Novas. From the outside you can't tell if its a 262 or a 350. They are all small block Chevy's. 262s are awesome tough little motors.
oh there was another monza? im not much of a car person so i wouldnt know being the 283 was in the mid 70s for trucks too the new body style and set up was from 76-81 they were all the same kind like the 88-91 set ups but instead 76-81 the 262 was still avalible after 79 as an option wasnt common but was still in some trucks
Can cut a 1/4 mile of lawn in under 13 seconds, lol.

Actually Chevy did make a 262 V8 Engine in the mid to late 70's. You usually saw them in Novas. From the outside you can't tell if its a 262 or a 350. They are all small block Chevy's. 262s are awesome tough little motors.

What are you talking about?
The Monza I was referring to was the RWD front engine version built from 1975 to 1980.
I wasn't referring to the Monza Corviar. That's a whole 'nother animal.
