@scott93257 The 262 was mid seventies Monza, it had unique bore and stroke and only was made 75-76. Chevy tried again in the late seventies with a 267, that had the stroke of the 350 but a 3.5" bore. Both of those engines were supposed to meet fuel economy and emission standards of the day but only made around 120 horsepower. The 305 took both of their places and with more horsepower depending on year anywhere from 145 with 2 barrel up to 220 or so in Camaro Tuned Port Injected versions.

@arc00ta Then they dropped the 262 after a year or so. Chevy came out with the 267 for 1979, with the stroke of the 350 and a 3-1/2" bore. Both those engines were intended for low emissions and good fuel economy but the 305 ended up serving in their place after the early 80's. Olds had a 260, Ford a 255 during the late 70's and Chrysler never went under 318 cui except for the Slant Six after the 60's.

Had never heard of the 262 and I should have...Was manufacture just two years from 1975 to 1976, yet did appear in some yearly model Pontiac Ventura's...4.3 liter with 3.67" bore and a scant 110 hp...Some v6's has the same 4.3 liter displacement..So it was a gas saving, low hp v8...For what you did here, I would have used the v6, but nice build...

They only made them for 2 years, 1975 and 1976 and they only were available in 2 cars, the 1975 Nova and the 1975 and 1976 Monza. But in this case, I have to admit this is probably the best use of a 262 cube V8.

It's actually both; back in the mid 70's Chevy decided to add a new economy V8 engine and came out with the 262 V8 for 1975. Then for whatever reason they came out with a new economy engine, the 305 in 1976. Then the 262 V8 was dropped for the 1977 model year.

A new 262, the V6 version, came out in 1985. The 262 V6, aka "4.3 liter" has nothing to do with the old 262 V8 except it has the same amount of cubes from 2 less cylinders...and more power than the old V8 version had.

I have looked it up....76-81 trucks you could get a 4.1 which is a 250 inline 6...or you could get a 5.0 which is a 305....or you could get a 5.7 which is a 350....and up until 1980 you could get the 6.6 which is the 400.

Also the 283 made at best, 220 hp stock and that was the hi-po versions. Most 283's were 195 hp. Yes some 350's of the late 70's only made like 170 hp, which is why I said a 283 "doesn't" always have more power than a 350....sometimes yes but often times no.

Actually Chevy did make a 262 V8 Engine in the mid to late 70's. You usually saw them in Novas. From the outside you can't tell if its a 262 or a 350. They are all small block Chevy's. 262s are awesome tough little motors.

oh there was another monza? im not much of a car person so i wouldnt know being the 283 was in the mid 70s for trucks too the new body style and set up was from 76-81 they were all the same kind like the 88-91 set ups but instead 76-81 the 262 was still avalible after 79 as an option wasnt common but was still in some trucks
