Is it possible to connect the other end of the second power line adapter to a router rather than connecting it to a PC? Would the network will be the same network or each adapter should be isolated on a separate conf.?
My wireless router is amazingly fast! but it depends, I have 3 apartments hooked up to mine! no one is experiencing any problems, I have tested my wireless network.. what I use are netgear wireless repeaters and have created a nice little relay system. the main wireless router which is connected directly to the internet, shares that to my parents apartment, then from there goes to another repeater and give internet to two other apartments. Its the way I have it sent and works excellent!
@ascolti No I have all wireless routers non located within apartment, they are all on front porches. the main one is hooked via ethernet and then connects from their to a wireless repeater. which from their brake's off into two other wireless repeaters, I have tested everything. every three months I shut them down for awhile and then turn them back on refreshing the network!
@zogmfirst some new power lines are way faster than it showed here .. this video is from 2009 and he shows 200mb/s PL , now there are 1gb/s powerlines .. not cheap of course but its more convenient than a long Ethernet wire from room to room
@darkitp sure there is newer faster equipment, but these interfere even more than the older ones since they just use a wider spectrum of frequencies. Dont expect the ambulance crew to be able to make contact with the hopspital when you are having a heartattack and blocking their radio (and everyone elses in the vicinity) using these devices. It started out low and 'only' interfered in the 2-30MHz bands but now, since they want to go faster they are widening the spectrum up to as high as 300MHz.
@zogmfirst you don't know your asshole from your jewnose, powerline delivers from my experience. go cook yourself with the wireless signals frying your brain and polluting your body with cancer.
@ShitWrangler you got to be kidding/trolling. Read my post again, i clearly recommended CABLE as in a wired network... And FYI, these units radiate MORE than wifi, using your powerlines as antennae so if you are scared of the radiation you just shot yourself in the knee.
@zogmfirst You're a hater hurter life destroyer. Just like Linus himself, a greasy huckster that gets take home product for ham fisted product pitches. Powerline is the superior mechanism for data transfer outside of using a modem or router, and it doesn't transmit harmful radio frequencies into your cranium like wireless. Shame of jew, agent of misinformation. Now we know all evil comes from your peoples.
I have 4 meters of my cat 6 cable running to my directly to my modem from PC works great I have it clamped to the floor & it runs under the door so it's out of the way no need to hire a contractor for that =)
I'm getting a PC for gaming and we have a wireless connection here. I won't be playing games like FPS where connection is vital, but will a wireless connection affect my gaming experience when playing RPG games like Skyrim and Diablo 3 (when released)? Any answer would be apppreciated.
@greasekill Huh... there are two types of speed... there is internet and intranet... he was abouting about intranet... get over your self and learn...
@greasekill Do you mean megaBYTES per second or megaBITS? If you are getting 22-23 megaBITS you are using old wireless. 300MBps = (1 Megabit = 125 Kilobytes [300*125 = 37500]; 1024 Kilobytes = 1 Megabyte [37500/1024 = ~36.6]. If you do the math ... sounds like you have a Wireless N Gigabit router.
I get 147Mbps rating with my adapters. They're AV 500's. I found a lot of people will use different adapter types or have them connected to outlets with powerbars that have tons of shit plugged in to them or connected to outlets that are close to high power consuming appliances. Powerline is not recommended for people who's homes are lit up like a Christmas tree.
is that good if i am downloading at 750 kbs on steam while using direct cable to my gigabyte switch? my router canT do QoS :(.. so sometime when someone is using wireless on my network, its lagging when i play COD on my ps3 which is connect directly to the same switch.. should i buy this powerline and make them ALL USING cable instead of wireless?
pinging is checking how long it takes for your computer to 'talk' to the internet, the lower the ping, the faster it responds, the better your internet
i have a power line adapter and i can assure you, you can plug it into an extender, it tells you on the packaging not to but i find it's just as effective. i use it for gaming and i pull host every online game i play.
You are missing the point if you compare this to your download speeds over the internet. This test was done locally in order to test a mediums individually, with no bottlenecks in the middle. When you download from Rapidshare, Steam, etc. you download over the internet, the bottleneck will ALWAYS be outside of your house/LAN.
But I do know the pains of slow connections as well as anyone, living in Australia seeing a 300kbps download is enough to make you think "WOW!", but usually it's ~100kbps
please correct me if I'm wrong and I meant this but, a wireless LAN card and the router is all referenced down to how powerful exactly the interface is between the LAN and router and this can be enhanced by updating your wireless LAN card and remember the router as well as this is the main hub which is connected straight to the power, yes or no? (its not that I'm not sure about this but I want to confirm this information I will appreciate it and please the right info!)
@timerunnerproduction i didnt say it was bad.i use a pentium d on my laptop(mobile version) its a cheap and efficient processor.i never told it was bad
I have avast! free its pretty good, also AVG free is pretty good too. If you have windows xp, vista, or 7 fully updated you should be good on its built-in firewall
Anyone plugging in with similar unit in that building could bum the connection.
That and also multi unit housing etc, same thing.
Wireless is also shit as seen here. But because everything using the same frequencies will interfere with it. Phone, cell, radio, hams, other wireless devices etc. Plus frankly people don't secure them so anyone can again, bum the connection.
Always use a hardline if you are using it in the same spot =D
@bLiTZxImPaKt This video is about the speeds of different network solutions the speed of your network is totally different to the speed of your internet.
@bLiTZxImPaKt well transfering between computers is suppose to be fast. Downloading games is a different story since you have so many things that can slow it down. Service provider or even the website itself.
The description of the video is conceptually incorrect. You don't get Internet connection TO your office using Ethernet, since it's a LAN technology, that's why you don't have any ISP installing a Cat6/Cat5e cable to your house.
That's also why Ethernet has the best performance here - it's specifically designed for such purpose, whilst both powerline and wireless are also used as transmission media from ISPs
So this video is more of comparisons btw technologies for in-home networking solutions.
the frequency of a power signal in the US is 60Hz.
if you add on something moving at 10+ MHz to the signal, it won't affect the power signal and you end up with something that's really a fuzzy looking power signal
the other side simply needs to take out the signal from power and voila, internet.
I've never had good experiences with d-link products. When using my cisco wireless set, I am able to get the same speeds and similar latencies as with wired. 1ms ping all around.
Long story short. Powerline internet problems are varied and bizarre/ from losing connection when the ice maker turns on to losing connection after truing the channel on the tv.( Didn't believe it until I did it myself)
In short if powerline works good for you.But for everyone else...
Ist Ethernet cable. 2nd WiFi not as fast but you can sit in front of the tv, then sit on the toilet with your computer with no interruption Long way 3rd powerline...it sucks.the worst option.
For what its worth, I am a 'cable guy' who specializes in computer (data) problems.
I would agree that people should always run 'cat' cable at ever opportunity, nothing can beat the speed or the reliability. Spend the extra money to get the white cable that will match your base board. You'll never notice it,as its the same thickness as a telephone cable,(sure if you can afford to have it run through the wall, then do that)
@wannannas2 The kit speed is rated in megabits per second. Windows shows transfer speeds in megabytes per second. 1 byte = 8 bits. The speed he is getting on the computer is actually 48 mbps.
Powerline and Wireless is a good solution. I have a powerline adapter in my room with my server, gaming rig, xbox 360, and access point connected to it. I get a super connection to my server within my room. Downstairs via the main router and desktops down there, they get an "okay" connection to my server. In my room, i can transfer 10 gigs in like 2 minutes
Wow never heard of powerline or anything that can do what powerline just did until now, because of this video i can now find an alternative to wireless.
@DunderHeadProduction most people do. and don't use WEP cuz someone with a basic hacking knowledge can hack your password in about 5 minutes. 256 Bit AES WPA 2 BOI!!!!!!!!!!
@xDRAN0x Powerline solutions work best within the same circuit. If you plug in the "transmitter" in one circuit and the "receiver" in a completely different one you will not see good results. Ethernet cable is the best solution for everyone and the safest since with wireless you have the problem of unwanted use of your internet service. Especially now that a lot of providers are limiting your usage like 250GB per month. Also unwanted issues regarding the type of surfing your neighbors might do
@Sirynx77 If you only use your wireless for internet access and you get decent signal strength around your house, using any other technology is pointless. Not many people have internet connections faster than a few mbps. You can encrypt your wireless network so it would be secure.
@poxcr Now I understand the wanting of people being "wireless" with their netbooks/laptops/notebooks and now with tablets and other devices getting popular to use WiFi as the way to connect to the internet. However, its best to make sure if you don't know how to properly secure it, make sure you get someone who knows what they are doing. You will be surprised how many sniffers are looking for vulnerable networks to use to do illegal stuff. Don't want to be in that side when cops come looking.
Best compromise in a lightning storm? If it won't allow you to use an APC (best surge protection) it's ony a matter of time before you blow up everry PC hooked up to the network lol. It is why we use APC's on everything and a 3x cordless phone kit (Panasonic)
i have like 11MBytes traffic throw wireless,my router is at 50 meters away...
i have fiber internet with 100Mbite traffic, in Mbytes it is 12.5 MBytes, in a few months they gone put 1000MBites throw my city, thats the only thing i love about my country... INTERNET SPEED :D
I don't know if it's my powerline adapters or just the wires in my walls but I get almost the same upload and download speed as my Ethernet cable from the router to the pc.
(I think they're the 200mbs versions too) But I got them fairly cheaply around a year and a half ago), they havent failed me since.

why does it say 200 mb per second on the box of the powerline adapter if u only reach about 6 mb per second ?
wannannas2 5 months ago
@wannannas2 The kit speed is rated in megabits per second. Windows shows transfer speeds in megabytes per second. 1 byte = 8 bits. The speed he is getting on the computer is actually 48 mbps.

Powerline and Wireless is a good solution. I have a powerline adapter in my room with my server, gaming rig, xbox 360, and access point connected to it. I get a super connection to my server within my room. Downstairs via the main router and desktops down there, they get an "okay" connection to my server. In my room, i can transfer 10 gigs in like 2 minutes

Not a real computer geek but, Does the Power line one make your Internet connection faster, or does it have to be fast already?

@msinglatry1984 god get over your nerd rage, i'd rather have WEP then nothing
DunderHeadProduction 5 months ago
the things he uses to hold down his cords are more expensive than my whole freaking computer!!!!!!!!!!! D:
jaybeaster 5 months ago
wireless is the best on my opinion, for some reason most people dont set a WEP key so people can just access his/hers router for free
;0
DunderHeadProduction 5 months ago
@DunderHeadProduction most people do. and don't use WEP cuz someone with a basic hacking knowledge can hack your password in about 5 minutes. 256 Bit AES WPA 2 BOI!!!!!!!!!!

Just bought the 500mbps setup after watching this video, only to find out today that it doesn't work at all in my home :[
I tried resetting, replugging, even trying the same outlet, the PL led never lights up. Submitting RMA now..
xDRAN0x 6 months ago
@xDRAN0x Powerline solutions work best within the same circuit. If you plug in the "transmitter" in one circuit and the "receiver" in a completely different one you will not see good results. Ethernet cable is the best solution for everyone and the safest since with wireless you have the problem of unwanted use of your internet service. Especially now that a lot of providers are limiting your usage like 250GB per month. Also unwanted issues regarding the type of surfing your neighbors might do
Sirynx77 5 months ago
@Sirynx77 If you only use your wireless for internet access and you get decent signal strength around your house, using any other technology is pointless. Not many people have internet connections faster than a few mbps. You can encrypt your wireless network so it would be secure.
poxcr 5 months ago
@poxcr Now I understand the wanting of people being "wireless" with their netbooks/laptops/notebooks and now with tablets and other devices getting popular to use WiFi as the way to connect to the internet. However, its best to make sure if you don't know how to properly secure it, make sure you get someone who knows what they are doing. You will be surprised how many sniffers are looking for vulnerable networks to use to do illegal stuff. Don't want to be in that side when cops come looking.
Sirynx77 5 months ago
Best compromise in a lightning storm? If it won't allow you to use an APC (best surge protection) it's ony a matter of time before you blow up everry PC hooked up to the network lol. It is why we use APC's on everything and a 3x cordless phone kit (Panasonic)
wwwBorsingPhotoCom 6 months ago
@wwwBorsingPhotoCom You just blow up the NIC usually. lol

I don't know if it's my powerline adapters or just the wires in my walls but I get almost the same upload and download speed as my Ethernet cable from the router to the pc.
(I think they're the 200mbs versions too) But I got them fairly cheaply around a year and a half ago), they havent failed me since.
