  • Excellent video! You've inspired me to imitate. Many thanks!

  • I have learned more from your 36-part how-to series than from 2 years in grad film school . . . and I still owe them money. THANKS!!!

  • Fantastic, Thanks. god bless you ^^

  • Hey Rick! Can you give me a list of all the parts you used? Thanks

  • great stuff man... I thought why spend 20 bucks for a piece of faux fir

  • Great job, thanks for sharing.

  • That has more layers than an Eskimo.

  • Was only me that saw a muppet on 8:05 ?

  • what shop did you get the fur from?

  • @ANDYxHAMILL found it on eBay

  • Is your microphone connected tot he video cam? or it works like a bluetooth?

  • @TheTremor209 the H2 has its own built in digital recorder and recorde the sound onto a SD card. you then just match the sound up with the video in your editor. You can also use a lead.

  • nice video.. thanks for the tip

  • Well, from a company called New Media, I bought the RODE VideoMic and a DeadCat Windscreen. It turned out the microphone costed $135 AUD and the DeadCat costed $40 AUD. So at lease it wasn't really expensive.

  • brilliant video. well presented and a great final product. thank you!

  • I've a question. The windjammer you made definitely has a lot of layers. Doesn't it overmuff the sound too much?

  • @legendsof567 A little - you do loose some of the higher frequencies with this design. I've since develioped a much better version that I sell from my windjammer business :o)

  • absolutely brilliant. you are the MAN. (its right in your name)

  • Thank you for sharing. I appreciate the video.

  • awesome, i made a tiny one for my desktop mic, i found black fur too

  • tribbles

  • That seems pretty effective and I was impressed that the sound was not too attenuated or muffled when you fitted the large one - this is standard fur fabric from the local market?

  • Hey rick do you mind telling us where you got the fur. If you all ready mentioned it sorry I missed it.

  • brilliant!!!!

  • How to make candy floss :P

  • any idea on what might work when wet?

  • @sgtish Nikwax?

  • Thanks that was very cool and practical, do u have a video on how to make a pop screen easily at home? And maybe one on recording audio vocals and acoustic guitar semi-pro at home, I don't have any of the hardware like amps n stuff, I dont wanna just use my webcam I want good quality to submit to record company.. thanks soo much, blessings fr Canada :)

  • this guys just like kipkay... so much hot glue

  • this wasn't what i was looking for but once he started talking about it all I watched the rest of it! lol

  • RODE! -noo! haha!

  • Whoa 70-80 POUNDS!!

  • I'd love to get one for my HDTZ ht81 shotgun mic.

  • @MattThomasFilm this design doesnt work on shotgun type mics - ive tried :o(

  • @rickvanman I wonder why that is? Do you mean it won't physically work, Rick, or that the actual windjammer has no effect?

  • @dazzybabe shotgun mics have a different configuration that is much harder to silence, so this style of windjammer won't have much effect

  • @rickvanman Thanks for the information Rick, and keep up the great work my friend!

  • Brilliant!!!!!! Going to have to buy one!!!!

  • Could you please tell us the names of the materials needed so we know what to search for on eBay? Thanks!

  • Hi Rick, thank so much for this video! I have just used the windjammer I made using your film on our project last weekend. It worked brilliantly! We have had so much trouble with ind noise even in LA!! Now we have perfect sound!!

    Thanks again!!

    Sam

  • @52films52week Great stuff Sam. Happy to help :o)

  • thats too bad you're not selling these anymore. i would buy one

  • @eyun01 Yep - still selling them - click the link in the notes.

  • as soon as my paypal account is sorted il be buying one of these!

  • where do you buy the fur?

  • @soosclues eBay

  • I made one today it works fantastic

  • I have all the items there, EXEPT for the fur. And I don't wanna put any more money into this. Even a small amount. Would it be much of a difference if there was no fur?

  • @SamWilber The fur is the key to making it work

  • Re. try Ebay, I thought about that but decided that Ebay wouldn't beat my £4.00 charity shop bargain, especially as I would have to pay shipping on Ebay. Also, I suppose I've helped a charity.

Update, just made my windscreen, and it's looking good.

  • Re. unfortunately I could only get white fur, I had to get an imitation animal fur, expect lots of attacks by animal liberation activists. Re. where do you buy fur? I got mine from a charity shop for £4.00. I was lucky as it's a fur jerkin kind of thing, it's bigger than a fur hat, that's fine by me as it has to be long as it's for a shotgun mic.

  • @afewtube Try eBay :o)

  • Hope you're having a great day too, Rick. ;)

  • i really like this. you know the cage you made for the underneath of the big windscreen.... well i popped into wilkos and found a bird seed cage that fit over the mic perfectly. i may have to shorten it slightly though.

  • @emptyboxesandrooms nice one!

  • how much did it cost you?

  • @MrLukasDiSparrow hard to say because I made this one from scrap materials, but it wouldn't have necessarily worked out that cheap - however I do sell a highly improved version for an intentionally low price (see notes for a link to the site) -been getting a lot of excellent feedback on my H2 windjammer design, so might be something worth considering if you are going for the H2 :o)

  • does this work well with the ht-81 mic?

  • @attomtv Unfortunately no. I've already tried it and it failed miserably.

  • Where do you buy the fur?

  • @enarchay eBay

  • I always knew that one day Gonks would be useful.

  • Thanks for the video, but how does the sound escape all of the covering from the big one?

  • The big one was really good but the other two change your voice very much and turned the volume lower.

  • Thanks for this awesome tut. I hit the hobby/craft store after work today and hoping to finish mine up tonight for a project tomorrow :) I have the zoom h4n. I'll post a video or photos once I'm done.

  • Great job. Very instructive. A real gem.

I see you use a rather large gap plastic mesh and paper/plastic/unknowned-materials/felt avaliable in any hobby shop. This is good and economical. Not a word to say against it.

But to simplify the matter, metal micro-mesh could also work. I have experimented with permanent gold-plated coffee filters (the conical Melita type). They work at once. With fur, I can imagine that they'd over perform.

    Keep-up the good work.

  • Brillant man, Thank you for taking the time to do this it really helps us indie film makers! much respect!

  • You should do them for the h1, maybe a little bit cheaper too.

  • @apeshitbeats I hope to stock then for the H1 soon

  • This has to be one of the most helpful videos I have ever seen on YouTube. Your presentation was clear and concise, you were aware of your audio without even monitoring it, and you showed me how to, step by step, solve a problem that was bothering me to no end. Like you, I don't feel like shelling out $40 for something I could do myself. Thank you for telling me how. I'll have to hit up the crafts store this weekend. Have a good one.

  • @bizzarrogeorge Glad the video helped :o) good luck with your project.

  • @rickvanman Thanks Rick. I just took a trip to the crafts store today, and after feeling a little emasculated for paroosing the aisles with the old ladies and young woman shopping for sparkles and glitter, I began my project. I built 2, 1 for my shotgun mic and the other for my Tascam DR07 recorder. I then proceeded to the testing and wow! I was blown away. I'm going to tidy up some loose ends and will post a video on the results this coming week. Thanks again. Outstanding DIY project.

  • Thanks, Rick! You save me some bucks!! Now I will try to make the windjammers for lavaliers, using your ideas.

    Thanks again! Go indie!

  • No wonder how the sheep fur allows the sheep to ba- so clearly even when it's so windy.

    : )

Thanks Rick. You are not a boring teacher. Great video.

  • Great video. Thank you. I made one with a few differences. I actually made a hole on the side of the wind muff to fit the headphone outlet on the Zoom H2.

    You're awesome!

  • @mrtony7 Glad it came in useful :o)

  • Genius!!!

  • Thank you so much. I just bought one of your windscreens and it arrived today! :D :D :D

  • @yeemeister94 Great stuff - hope it serves you well :o)

  • hey Rick, this is yeemeister94 again :D. I just found out that Samson just came out with a new microphone that is technically the successor of the H2, however it is much cheaper. Reasons: smaller structure, less music-related functions. I don't know if my question would be a bother to you, but I just had to ask: Should I keep my original idea and buy the more expensive H2 (the larger size/weight might be a pro and might be a con at the same time...), or should I just go with the new H1? Thanks!

  • @yeemeister94 It all depends on what you want out of it. The Zoom H2 is still by far the superior model as it has 4 mics so you can get surround 5.1 sound - whereas the H1 only has 2 mics so you are limited to stereo.

The H2 also has a lot more features available via the menu - the H1 does not appear menu driven, so is limited to the few features/buttons you are given on the body.

I'm sure the H1 will do a good job, but I wouldnt swap it for my H2.

    hope this helps

    Rick

  • Thanks man! Great tutorial!

  • Your are THE MAN!!!!!! One of the best instructive videos I've ever seen, on or off of YouTube. Thank you so much.

  • @rells2000 happy to help - glad you liked :o)

  • wow. The quality of that last one (the big one) is amazing. I am purchasing the ZoomH2 for voice acting and sound design and this is just what I will need. Thanks for taking the time to make this very helpful vid Rick!

    Cheers!

  • I payed about 31€ for the stupid original H2 Dead Kitten.... and its not even good.

If the wind blows more than 20khm (its a very light breeze), u can hear it and it ruined your recording. its very annoying.

I will try to build my own now. Thanx for the instruction.

  • Excellent video, definitely going to use this technique for my boom mic

    big thanks from the USA!

  • where did you buy the fur?

  • @yeemeister94 eBay

  • @rickvanman do you know if i can just buy some fur from a local hobby/knitting store? Does it have to be a specific length?

  • @yeemeister94 its just normal fake fur - but the longer it it, the better.

  • @rickvanman Thanks!

  • Hi!, first of all, I want you to know your videos are just great, I'm a huge fun of them since they're so claery well explained.

I'd like to know if you could explain to me (or us, the youtube viewers) what's the difference between a gun mic and a zoom mic, some models like the Sony ECM-HGZ1 include both modes, and I don't know the difference between both of them. Thank you very much for your time.

Sorry for my english, I speak spanish, so, I might whrote some words in a wrong way...

  • My design was less than $2 and its a simple fur cover with an elastic cuff...it works fine...I also employ one that makes my recorder look like a little teddy bear for those situations where a recorder isnt allowed...my HD camera looks like a cell phone so its easy to smuggle into concerts

  • idd like to buy one from you Rick

  • rick another great tutorial, you can probably tell by now im a big fan of your film making tips and tricks videos, ive decieed to go with the audio technica atr-655 shotgun mic from amazon and i will plug it into my laptop to save spending hundreds of more pounds to get a camcorder with inputs,

im assuming the small sock you made was just the fur, if it was im gonna buy some black fur which looks more pro, and use that on my mic,

  • Rick, that was an excellent tutorial and very useful!

  • I'm sure I've seen your microphone cover dancing away in nightclubs, usually wrapped around someone's ankles (I guess that's young love for you).

  • This tutorial was great, Rick. Even if the dead cats cost more in the UK, I'd definitely want to use this over a $50 low end version. Great work, as usual.

    Thanks. Have a great day

  • Thanks a ton, Rick! Great ingenuity, you've created a life-saver.

  • thanks dude.. looks easy to create

  • you are really great! thanks! :D

  • The medium size sounded like it damped the sound quite a bit. But the large one sounded great. Will have to modify your design for my microphones.

  • Canford uk do a zoom H2 and other portable recorder windjammers for £18 they work very well i got one. They don't look as funky as Rick's though lol.

  • Rick you are a genius!

  • That's fantastic idea. Thanks a lot Rick.

    Joe

  • Insanely clear sound! Great work!

  • Sell them! I'll buy!

  • As allways i really enjoyed watching your supercool tutorial which was indeed very well explained! Thanks Rick!! I'll go for it and i think i might tint my fur into dark grey before i glue it together :)

Have a nice rest of the day too!

  • Awesome DIY Rick, there's only one Thumb up button, but I would like actually to give you 2 thumbs up!

  • Rick

once again your vid is awsome

  • Can you make loads of the big sock and then sell them, please??

  • @TheFilmMaster I have a plan in action :o) watch this space

  • @rickvanman

    Awesome!!

  • Your glue gun could put that mic wind cover company out of business!

  • wow thats pretty cool

  • Awsome thanks for the help but what if i want to make one for a lapel mic

  • @Chromajt same principal applies - I have now made one for my lapel mic and I hope to test it out shortly. I've also ordered some dark fur so that if it works, I'll make one in the dark colour so it wont look so daft arrached to the front of my shirt! LOL!

  • super tutorial! thanks a lot!

  • Great...but we used glue guns in primary school, get a grip! :)

  • -gets really excited to see a tutorial- Nice work and since many ppl aren't the best at diy or don't have access to the materials needed, it would probably be a really good idea to sell the wind screens, I'll defiantly buy one. :D

  • Here's a fan ! Thanks for the info! Great vid' as usual.

  • Wind sock...

  • Really cool! I might have to make one for my Shotgun mic. this looks like a excellent way and the process was very well described. Liked the tutorial!

  • its like a tv ad. weird..lol.

  • good show! I`ve been meaning to get an external mic and this is good to know

  • Wow, ads? I must unsubscribe!

  • excellent!

  • I know you've had issues with wind noise for a while. I'm glad you came up with an economical solution. I would have thought it may muffle the sound so I'm glad you demonstrated it. I may make one for my little digital recorder. :)

  • How would this work on a Boom Pole, wouldn't it slide off?

I got a Zoom H2, and been prepping to do your boom pole video.

Also, didn't know we could get hot glue guns in the UK!

  • at 10:17 it looked like you had white candy floss haha!! looks great, and sounds very effective for field recordings! a good tutorial Rick, thanks.

  • That is amazingly effective.

  • WOWEE, AMAZING THANKS.

  • haha i have a few scars from hot glue guns

  • Awesome Rick, I just bought an H2. Perfect.

  • AWSOME

  • great video, as always

  • this might come in handy i made a video today got a comment saying i should have turn on the wind cut

  • Will have to try that myself. it looks wicked!

  • You've got me hooked on this one. I -REALLY- like this idea. There are dozens of craft stores here where I can get all this stuff for $5 or less! Awesome! Plus I like that Zoom H2 thingy too!

  • Comment removed

  • Nice one Rick! Cheers

  • great idea rick those cute fluffy things reminds of the Tribbles from a old Star Trek episode!

  • Rick you should sell those on Ebay a lot of people would buy them.

  • Briliant tip ;d

  • Hi Rick,

Great idea, I to have the zoom h2 recorder and have been really impressed with the quality of sound. When I was looking for a recorder I watched your vid of the zoom, so thanks for that too.

  • Be carefull! Lady GaGA will want you for her dresses, on the next video.

  • I am at the point where I want to get a mic that can work very well. I want to get the best that I can for the lowest cost. I checked prices of it and they seem to be right at the upper band of my budget expense for this project.

  • Thank you, Rick!

  • Sweet

  • Just what I have been searching on the net 4 ages!

  • Awesome! I'm going to try that! Great build Rick!

  • Very helpful tutorial Rick! How much was your Zoom H2 microphone?
