Without the 10 commandments how can you serve God and love your brother as yourself?What will one do to go to hell? Prayerfully consider this: God is merciful and salvation has nothing to do with 10 commandments as you are saying, how come some people are heading towards hell? I don't think the church is being LEGALISTIC but simply look at the pragmatic and positive aspect that can also help to enrich your christian journey. 10 COMMANDMENTS IS LIKE A MIRROW THAT TELLS YOU THE DIRT IN YOUR FACE.
If you talk about salvation, you are right. If you talk about sanctification,the Holy Spirit will do it in us by implanting His law in our hearts. The kingdom of God has laws. Jesus said, "I didn't come to avoid the law". It is NOT OK for christians to disregard the law of God and keep sinning carelessly, right? We cannot keep the commandments perfectly. Only Jesus could do that. But if we sin on purpose we do not belong to Jesus.

However, they have their function: Be aware that at the end of times there will be too many fake christians. The true believers will be identified by the observance of God's laws in their hearts, not to be saved, but BECAUSE they are saved by Jesus. See Revelation 14:12 and 22:14
