Been on this a couple of times and you just have to go for it and have faith you'll come out the other side unscathed (you always do somehow).
BTW was that Swindon Town's County Ground by it? I went to a couple of matches there in the late 80s/early 90s and don't seem to remember it being that close to it!
I do not know of any round-about in the world which matches this one? I live in Australia and grew up in Swindon and so many English people know about it.......no roundabouts in Australia...they just use traffic lights!
If someone tried to build a roundabout like that in America it would be ruled unconstitutional and subsequently become the basis for frivilous lawsuits. I felt quite dizzy watching that video.
@mmmbilley that is a demonstration of the amazing construction and imagination skills of Swindon if you don't like it piss off coz I live on the road just off it. And if u don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all
@andwhatufool911 I shouldn't really tell you this (it's top secret), but every driver applying for a British F1 team has to pass the Magic Roundabout test as part of the interview process. One wrong turn and you're out....
@mmmbilly This road makes the traffic flow really freely, much better than the forest of traffic lights that would have to replace it. Its really not that scary at all.
There is always some stupid driver with a L on their car that panics when they get here. I always laugh. Looks like they missed Elvis on the quad bike ;)
@jimtastic Because its in Swindon, and because Swindon is in Wiltshire, close to Crop Circle territory? It Looks similar to a set of Crop Circles near Lockeridge, Wiltshire.
Its Easyyy Tbh... I Live In Swindon And You Can Just Pretty Much Drive Straight Through So Long As You Remember To Give Way To The Right lol.. Altho.. Get In The Wrong Lane During Rush Hour And You've Got No Chance Of Gettin Back! HaHa
Just noticed at 1.33 there appear to be 4 lanes all with arrows pointing straight ahead - however there is no straight ahead - you have to go left or right onto another mini roundabout , a driver approaching this for the first time stands no chance. The designers should be held personally responsible for all accidents LOL
These roundabouts are easy to navigate and great once you have had a chance to see the road markings, but for a stranger approaching them for the first time it is very easy to get in the wrong lane, then the locals will not let you change and it becomes dangerous.
cool vid tho, ive always wanted to see what its like at the magic roundabout. the people at the highways agency were deffs tripping when they designed that one... :P
That is a crazy roundabout. I don't know if there is anything similar here in the US. We have them here too in MD but very basic ones. So for most of us from the States who look at something like that, it can be pretty intimidating. But you have to figure that residents of the UK are probably trained for roundabouts like this when they learn how to drive anyway. So it might be something you just have to learn.
@DutchManticore They're showing up in the US more frequently in new housing developments and road reconstruction, but large scale ones aren't being built in my area and smaller ones aren't being designed properly for large trucks and busses.
And those not being designed properly... I'm quite sure those are just childhood diseases and will be solved when construction workers get more experienced building them.
Roundabouts are...round, and this is a super one, even more round, but the quickest way from A to B is the straight line. Just go straight! Stop it with all this toss and turn! Ahahahah!
Lol. Thats why this roundabout is always packed, you keep going around it. He's still there now... You do realise it's not that big of a deal. I live in Swindon, its a roundabout... Wow!
Dang dude that's crazy, We've only got the island roundabouts here in Idaho. I do agree though, roundabouts and four way stops are better than lights in my opinion. They improve the flow of traffic and less wrecks.
Fucking idiots! Roundabouts is a solution to pollution in america, because you allmost don't stop, so you save gas. Well there is a rules and signaling entering a roundabout, and you have to know when to change the lanes. Doubt that you with your attitude "I'll go and let nobody in front of me" will ever master them. Then sit in traffic at the red light.
FACT: average speed in England, where 87% interesections is a roundabouts is 45% higher than in US. Do you know what this % symbol mean? LOL
that would not work at all in Minnesota, considering I have trouble seeing straight roads in the snow, so if that was covered in snow it would look like a giant parking lot.
I've always wanted to drive it. It might look confusing to the non-English, but most of Europe has very straightforward well-marked traffic rules, and I'm sure that if you giveway at all the marked locations, anyone could drive this thing. MOAR Roundabouts! Now! :)
i went on that years ago with a friend of mine who lives in swindon. she said 'oh, i havent' been on here yet, hang on tight'. scared the bejesus out of me.
Actually, as far as I know there used to be traffic lights and that didn't work. So they created this and funnily enough it actually does work. Very few accidents and the traffic flows better than before.
The council sucks ass. Instead of improving the rubbish facilities, they spend around 50k + on a stupid Christmas tree that is so badly done that it is not even worth the "festive spirit". That's our council for you...
And you've just given me an idea. There's only one "roundabout" on Islay I can think of, but I'm sure it must be possible to do something with that...

The magic roundabout is easy to use, it's just that visitors see the daunting sign and panic.
You just treat each roundabout separately and use as normal. If you can't use a roundabout you shouldn't be driving!
