  • damn. youre very talented!

  • great job man, i attempted live electronic stuff to, dropped a lot of cash on hardware only to figure out its hard as shit haha so props for you doing this man, this is real talent. great job brotha.

  • hey! that sidechain on bass and almost all sounds is done by hardware comp., or its done in software enviroment?? anyway bigup for that act!!

  • @Eksrr Sidechains are in ableton - feed by machinedrum kick...

  • would go very nicely along with Ellen Alien

  • loving the bass!

  • great track the sounds are very rich and wild and theres lots of passing strange sounds to keep the track moving

I know what you mean about trying to find a good set up to produce eletronic music live I have been trying to find the right set up myself. My true goal is to have a set up with out the add of a computer (crazy idea I know)

  • @mathbsound The computer is getting used less and less for 'source' - but I still think it has a valid use as a massive digital mixing environment.

  • Yea i mean I use live with the maschine and apc40 but for some reason i feel like the computer screen sucks my soul out :)

  • @mathbsound Oh, gotcha. I come from a time when no computer meant, no computer... ;P

Machine and the APC40 could be button overload though? Machine for triggering, and something like the VCM600 as a mixer?

  • yea button overload

macshine and apc40 the play nice together I make beats and patterns on mashine then run them through the beat repeat in ablton and use the apc 40 for all the tweekings and recording very nice work flow i hardly touch the mouse

  • Thanks guys.. I really need to get around to doing more of these!

  • WOW

  • it kinda fucked with my head, like i couldn't focus my eyes. this has gotta be one of the best dubs i've heard in a while <3

  • @oliviadesimone heh... thanks!

  • Dubstep usually tends to bore me... I'm feeling this though. Nice stuff.

  • @moosenamedmorton Heh... thanks bud. I can appreciate the sentiment - although - I would think this verges on the deeper side of DubStep..

  • I Love the bass it seems its about to bust my eardrums!

    B: Bad

    A: Ass

    S: Sound

    S: System

  • @AChubbyChaserHD Hah! Cheers bud.

  • I am not totally into this, but there is a huge following for this real progressive sound. Just find your right audience and you'll be huge bro.

  • @Dubstepconcept Thanks bud. Don't really know where the audience for this is.. just mucking around in the studio... :)

  • This is sick, big ups on using the hardware.

  • its a little bit boring im sorry not trying to be mean

  • @beautiful1girl9 - all good. Each to their own.

  • @beautiful1girl9 not boring ... only minimal

  • It is interesting to watch you tinker around and make noises:] . Like an alien come to earth hehe

  • Damn this shit is dope! Even the camera is shaking +1

  • @burtonium1 i don't know about that.."reason" is cool but lacks the sort of improvisational flexibility and control that multiple hardware devices have. As this video illustrates, certain hardware is necessary to manipulate live sound as it happens. Plus, reason sounds won't touch the dark energy. There is really no comparison. right now, in 2011, there is no vst that can touch a doepfer analog sound and the dimension it has. you can drink carlo rossi or a $14 bottle of wine. your choice...

  • @burtonium1 Probably the stupidest thing Ive heard in all week.

  • @burtonium1 - wait.. you are saying that they can produce more complex and refined sounds out of a DAW, compared to a live jam, unmastered, on some hardware?

    So can I?

I think you may have missed the point.

  • this is excellent man and your collection of gear is inspiring ..... im just fucking around in fl studio with the korg nano series but i think it might be time to spend some real cash

  • how did you make the noise on channel 4 (the one with that crunchy resonance)? with the evolver?

  • @xbinaryx - that will be the Dark Energy - the 'lead' where the pitch gets all wigged out?

The Evolver is the Bass sound.

I think that is how it was set up. I tend to change things every-time I plug it all together.. ;)

  • How much did all that gear cost you bro?

  • @Eworusk12 Heh. Too much bud. Too much.. ;)

  • AWESOME!

  • Love the way the bass shakes the camera!

  • HEy ProofNZ... are you getting that wobble from the DSI evolver? I see the MD doing its thing but wasn't sure... That Vestax mixer is a gem when working with software and assigning effex etc...... BEAST of a TUNE.....

  • @Lemure333 - yeah - the bassline is out of the Evolver - that thing can have a big, big sound..

  • @ProofNZ ... interesting... I have a poly evolver but need to figure how to sync and run it through ableton and have it triggered... I could use the MD as a trigger but that is new as well....back to the Labratory.... great set up man... thanks for getting back to me man...OneLove

PS... the evolver does have a big sound, Put four of them together and BOOM ...sound is hugh but can get muddy....I dig your groove brudda

  • @ProofNZ are you triggering it (evolver) with ableton?

  • @Lemure333 - yeah - midi clips within Ableton triggering the hardware..

  • @ProofNZ Word...sounds clean and you got that ish all under control...

  • @Lemure333 - thanks bud. Actually now sold the Evolver and looking at getting a monomachine - then I can finally move all the sequences out of Ableton as well, and just use it as a mixing environment..

  • @ProofNZ For sure brudda, speak truth...

The Monomachine was one of the best investments I made in years besides the MDUW and the poly evolver... the monomachine is easy and seeing you know your MD, you wil ick it up fast. I found mine used and perf cond for 1100 usd and use it every time I sit down. I have ableton live 8 but it's in the box b/c the computer software thing intimidates me. People tell me it's easy if you follow tutorials. Did you find it difficult to learn ableton?

  • @Lemure333 - Not, but I have also worked as technical support for Steingberg in NZ, so new DAW systems generally come fairly easy to me. It's not that I find computers intimidating, just not inspiring these days.

Long term plan is to start building a Modular and go to analog style sequencers - just play and see what comes out - DAW's ultimately seem a little too, umm, results orientated?

  • @ProofNZ Yeah, results ar egood when you need them but the magic for me is in experimental and modular is the way to go. I am building a modular for "the french connection" controller and it only helps with other synths and the learning curve...

With computers, at least for me, it's nice to hit the record button and edit what I create with hardware, voice, guitars, drums(kits-hand) and other odd instruments run through pedals etc...

I could never be all software... to dull and lifeless.. peace

  • Damn I love this video! I've been looking for stuff like this. This is what I want to start getting into. Mabye you can start me off with everything. How long can you go on with this? like can u do a live show?

  • I have the vci 300 and in to mixing dub aswel. now my question is what do i need for crazy effects? I klnow im outing myself as a noob in the following question (which i still am cause im new to mixing) but what does the VCM600 acctually do?

  • @Cheesebtrz - Dubstep bud. Dub is already a well established genre. ;)

The VCM600 is essentially acting as a mixer within the Ableton environment - it controls the levels, eqs, as well as the effects I have set up within a custom Ableton session.

Something else I need to point out - that isn't DJing - that is creating the tune on the spot.

What is the software you are using? Traktor, Serato Itch?

  • @ProofNZ Im using serato Itch. I would like to combine the vci 300 and the vcm 600, but I have looked online and found nobody who does this. Is it possible to use both of them together? since I rly lice what Iv'e seen about the vcm600. If this is the case I believe the vfx effect controller is not needed as an addon for the vci 300 am I righ?

  • @Cheesebtrz - Personally I think both together would be a bit overkill.. what is it exactly that you want to be able to do? More control over effects?

  • @ProofNZ Ok, I was acctually thinking the same but I wasn't sure. Well I want to break out of just mixng stuff together i want to throw crazy effects in and make it become a hole new song... I want to have alot of different effects and sound control options just as or close to the vcm 600. Is there any device which I could use with searato itch (because the th vci 300 is only compatible with this software) I would like to be able to link different synthesizers, midi controlers or whatever to mix

  • Comment removed

  • in fact it would be a really big help if you could tell me what your setup is for sending the midi data out to 3 synths at once?

or just what you did lol i have 2 and cant really see a logical way

  • @BigBaggaBlues One cable - using the Midi Thru.

Just assign the external hardware to separate midi channels (you have 16) and you are away!

Im my case, the Machinedrum is sending midi clock to Ableton, then a midi cable goes from the Evolver to the Nord (the Lead has no Midi output) and the Dark Energy is running off USB.

  • @ProofNZ althouh - if you aren't distributing midi using channels and thru ports yet, learn how to - saves you buying more hardware.. ;)

  • @BigBaggaBlues you can also use an opcode studio, i use two of them to multiply midi outs from my sequencer, but they also act as a midi inteface, some of them even have cv. i got both of mine for less than $20

  • i love it !

  • you got some nice shit, ill swap u my good condition korg emx-1 for your evolver lol

  • Hey man i got a question for u. Im new to the whole music making business i've played around on FL Studios attempting to make some dubstep but most of it isnt vary good. i was just wondering what do u think would be good to help me start off. (BTW lets keep in mind im only 16)

  • @band4life890 Time and Practice.

Read and learn everything you can - the internet is just a wealth of knowledge, and practise in the form of play. I spent nearly a year living as a borderline hermit, just writing music in the first version of Reason that came out.

Don't expect to be writing stormers in the first few months. You have to do your time. Unless you want to make generic tunes, in which case, just get some loops and wave your hands around like a star.. ;P

  • nice setup man, i love music gagets and you have plenty. keep it going man. :D

  • @Preeny666 - Thanks bud.

  • im really starting to get into this music but 1 question? is it badass if i listen to it while rolling????

  • @yorgishmorgis ok - so now I feel old.

Do you mean rolling, as in, the car, or rolling, as in, a blunt?

  • @yorgishmorgis hahahha nah man i meant on extacy

  • @yorgishmorgis - mmm.. maybe - I would probably think it might be a bit better when Irie.. maybe tripping? Could go a little introspective and dark though.. Dunno - done neither..

  • @ProofNZ DONE NEITHER! as a fellow kiwi im thinkin bullshit lol....but yeah awesome wit e and trippin but does get pretty heavy wen on the tabs

  • @yorgishmorgis Does howdy duty have wooden balls, does a bear shit in the woods ? It can only get better....be good to your serotonin levels in the long run homey, all in moderation right?

  • droppin doses to thiss, sick

  • i like your monkey

  • @mentaltfladdrig - why thanks. Like it myself.. :)

  • @ProofNZ :D

I forgot to say that i like the track too, but i assumed that you understood that i like it, since theres no way in hell that a person cant like it :]

  • nice you got skills and you can handle your gear!!!!! waahahaha nice man

  • sick as bro, like the lfo tampering ;) ;) ;)

  • this is fucking sick dude. seriously.

  • wow, seriously very good arranging & controling!!! love it, especially the "little" drop at 4:42 is sooo fat!!!

  • love watching live Pa's no matter who's doing it. Big ups man!!

  • prob sounds alot better in person

  • why would u have ur setup like that? instead of on a table or something. looks like u can barely reach some of that.

  • @jamiesawyers I know. I should probably just do it all off the iPhone.

  • @ProofNZ dude. im not hatin. i think that is sick as fuck. i was just wondering. it looks like your having to reach up far for some of it. and i dont own an iphone btw.

  • @jamiesawyers S'all good bud.. that is actually a standard sized 'DJ' Table - so the setup is about as wide and tall as a mixer and 2 turntables.. Additionally, I do enjoy the 'physicality' of this kind of setup..

  • @ProofNZ nah bro, i think he thinks that stuff is up near the roof, but hes not taking into account the camera turned 90 degrees lolligans

  • @DJmaoriDMW hahaha@lolligans my new favourite word from now on

  • @aliceapplepie ;) ;) ;)

  • shit mann have more money xD

  • LOL! dude u must have a mega setup, everytime the bass hits the camera wobbles ^.^

  • @akarl11 Yeah - there is 12" Genelec directly opposite the camera.. :)

  • very nice tune!

  • holy fuck your mixers are all in a Cluster fuck

  • the monkey is keepin an eye on tings

  • download link??

  • @axxelander Not that one - new jam at soundcloud that I will be making available for download - different style altogether though..

Bromide Dub on Soundcloud (cant link in comments)

  • more tracks!

  • @xdeville1 Heh.. working on it!

  • like it alot

  • Do you use headphones to listen to the parts before you bring them into the mix? or do you make a track using your hardware then re-make it live? or just get very high and see what happens?

  • @djWrongun :)

I essentially have a pile of pre-written midi sequences (I can't play keys live that well) - which I then pick and choose from, and use those to feed the hardware. Drums are added and programmed live, tempo, feel and so on, therefore just becomes a choice of what I feel like at the time. The basis of a track could be performed at 110 and beats heavy to give it a 'downbeat' kinda vibe, ramped up with a 4/4 for house, or speed up to breaks, electro or dubstep territory..

  • @djWrongun Cant really get on much at all - need to stay fairly clear to keep everything under control. Will admit though, once working it, I will probably look spaced out / detached from the world, as I crawl deep into the land of electronics..

    :)

  • @ProofNZ Ha Ha jokes keep up the good work.... next project is a live dubstep band......

  • Straight up laid Back intro man Freaking love it SUBSCRIBES ON!

  • good skills

    bless!

  • Oh shit like this vid alot! just started using reasons 4.0 making similar beats to what u have seen, but this seems more hands on, ps some nice and smooth wobbles.

    Bang bang!!

  • Sounds great!

  • equipment?

  • @69audioprofit In the description bud..

  • @ProofNZ its class man fair play

  • great stuff! very inspiring to take my md again and play around :-)

  • ... great!!!! ***** for you!!!

  • nice synths you got there. How do you like the Dark Energy ? From the videos I've seen, it's pretty dope and fat. I'm planning on buying one..

  • Its very, um, quirky?

Simple, so lots of fun to just play with.. can definitely put out some bass..

  • oh and just to clarify, THIS is not redundant and trendy :) That's what I was getting at man. You've taken something that has started to calcify and shot some life back into it. For that, I give you double metal fists \mm/ :)

  • \mm/

Yeah - like many 'new' genres, it doesn't take long before producers still referencing within the genre (trying to sound like the big tune of the moment) and innovation becomes repetition.

That rig is intentionally set up to make me work harder. It also leads towards more experimentation that way.

I will put up some more videos soon - as Dubstep is only part of the sound coming out..

  • right on, I agree with your perspective completely, and I look forward to hearing your future sonic adventures. :)

  • Nice toys, see a Nord rack ;), obviously serious about your work. I'm personally tired of dubstep, it's a trend now, it's dull, it's redundant, and it does nothing for me. When it comes to dub, I just dig up the Jack Dangers collection, nobody will ever do it better. But regardless, this is an awesome jam for being a style of music I usually dismiss pretty quickly. It's just too trendy for a world of electronic innovators, don't mean to sound like a hater. But, honestly this is a gnarly jam

  • DAMN, using hardware even brutha. next time your in invers ya should do a demo, thats some mad craziness. ya bin doin any live gigs like this??? mean

  • thought the cam was going out of focus, it was just the bass doing that .. nice.......

  • Fresh!

  • I can see distortion on the vid. Did you have it nice and loud?

  • Yeah. There is a 12" Genelec about a meter to my left..

That's the entire camera shaking along.

  • Nice work

  • I'm just curious, but when did you purchase the VCM600? Did you know about the APC40 when you made your purchase?

I'm comparing the two, and it seems like the APC40 beats the VCM600, at least from a purely Live standpoint, although I really enjoy the looks of the VCM600.

  • No, I didn't - but more importantly, I didn't know about the Launchpad when I bought the APC.

To me, the VCM and APC are quite different beasts.. the VCM is a solid, 6 channel midi mixer surface with channels for returns and 'master' effects..

The APC is a hybrid of a Monome, with extra knobs.

I have been forced to use one only (Ableton Control Surface / Remote issues) and the VCM is more important to me in the way I work. If I only wanted to carry one bit of kit, then maybe the APC..

  • i like the way the camera shakes everytime theres some heavy bass :P

  • K, so im a total noob. I love music, and i play the bass. My friend showed some dubstep a couple months back and ever sense then,,,,,god damn, only thing i listen to. Anyways, what is a guy looking a spending to get setup to do this stuff. Were do i start, should i even try?

  • If its something you want to do.. then yeah - of course you should try!

I mean, I have decided to do it mainly with hardware, which is probably not the cheapest way to do it..

But, especially since you are a bass player, I would start looking at things where you can create a live 'backing' track for you to mess around over top of with the bass, with a pile of envelope followers, octavors and other 'synth' like effects... would be kinda cool.. I would think.. :)

  • good stuff man. i can see the camera shake durin the wobble lol

  • how much is all that equipment

  • @Steez420 Quite a bit. :)

  • How is the Vestax VCM 600 with the Launchpad? I'm looking at a similar setup.

  • It would be wicked - except I am also am using external midi hardware - which doesn't work while the Launchpad is in Control Surface mode..

So, it might be removed, or I might just have to hardmap the entire thing and use it as a remote, not control..

  • @ProofNZ I'm looking at using a Micro Korg and padKontrol as well. Would this conflict with the Vestax VCM 600 and launchpad?

Also, could you control the top 8 effects on the right like how you do on the APC40? So two buttons would be to scroll through effects on a track and on button could be to activate it. So like an automap thing that would automap to knobs to whatever the effects is.

  • @IntellDevice My only issue would be the potential of the Micro Korg to end up getting delayed midi information.

The problem is using a Remote Out and a Control Surface at once.. I think what is happening, is a massive amount of midi info is also getting output to the remote out on the VCM, which then delays the note midi output..

  • @ProofNZ Could you answer my other question please? :)

I basically want to know if I can scroll through tracks then effects on a track then be able to control a effect with the knobs. I don't want the knobs hardwired to a specific effect.

  • I think so. I have personally never really been into the whole 'shifting with the project' kinda thing - I want a knob to do one specific job. Even if I need to get more knobs to do it.. ;)

  • @ProofNZ Thanks for all the help man. Means a lot to me. I may have more questions in the future ;)

    Thanks again

  • @IntellDevice No worries...

  • very good

  • mean! skills
