Totally agree about Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic/Beethoven combination. This is the closest one can get to heaven, Beethoven, and the Almighty. I truly believe that Beethoven was divinely inspired.

Sad to say there's a much better earlier version that the Berlin Philharmonic or its recording company took down from the web. Even more sad insofar it took a great teaching tool away from me. I was showing my son the differences between Bernstein, Karajan and Toscanini, as to how the piece is interpreting by conductors and, like boom, Karajan's early videos were gone.

Isaiah Berlin noted that "Karajan was a genius, although there was a whiff of sulfur about him." Regardless, Karajan was most definately the most insane conductor I have ever seen. It's mind-blowing to see this grand finale with the orchestra AND the choir going at the same time. It's moving to see Karajan reaching the peak moment in his Life and to see him experience all of what he and his band had to offer. The best display in music- otherworldly. Beethoven!

There is something to be said about everyone being dressed nicely, looking uniform. Call it old fashioned, call it buttoned up, call it snobby, I don't really care. I just think it looks neat when everyone- orchestra, chorus, and audience looks nice and dresses like it is a special occasion.
