As far as getting this "variance" this is only concerned with these laser projectors? or pointers as well? Because everywhere I have read is that they have allowed for everyone to have access up to 1W lasers nowadays without having to get special certifications.

Fair enough having rules for these things , in the UK we have been using high powered lasers at festivals and raves since the 80s and I have seen them used in some quite worrying ways even in the past few years , not that I complained , they looked amazing .

hmmm that is a toy laser , the smollest laser that we use here in romania is 500mw and this one is regarded as a smole one, somethin that would go as ok is 2w and the big ones are obove 5w. im sory for u guys there in america . greetings from romania

Brian is right. I have a 500mw Green laser and I just purchased a 2000mw RGB Projector and I will be filling out those papers very soon. All it takes is for one person to complain that they got hit in the eye and they can sue you. If you dont have a variance then you are screwed. It is now required that you have a safety check list and that you record and fill it out everytime you operate the laser. This will save your ass in the worst case senario. Protect your ass and get a variance!

The 5mW laser limitation by the CDRH goes way back to the 70's (not the patriot act). It essentially boils down to how much light it takes to blind someone when exposed for X amount of time.

It's mad you have to go through these steps in the US, especially as public safety doesn't appear to be the reason behind it. In the UK you can buy any laser product and just use it. The Kam Star Cluster will never be legal in the US as it's a laser class that cannot be used by civilians. At yesterdays DJ Show North, in the UK, American DJ had a new star cluster effect, not on their website, not in their catalogue but was less than half as bright as the KAM Star Cluster on the stand next door.

The trouble with Kam or any other lasers that as of right now are not approved by the FDA is that you can't get USA variences for them. So, to my knowledge, you can't even get a varience for the Kam Star Cluster in the USA

If you bought an X-Laser with the EZ varience kit, no, the paperwork isn't a big deal. You just read thru some stuff & sign yoru name a few times, write down your address a few times, etc. It's quite easy

Nice laser Brian. I work in theater and if we're going to use any laser (not just above 4.95mW) we need to post a placard. And if we do use a laser above the 4.95mW limit we need to send notification to some government agency and allow an inspection if they want. Do you get around this because you are only doing "private" parties and small dj gigs?

you get something called a difuser..... it cuts the one laser beam into somethign liek 10 or 20.... or whatever.. basically cuts the one signal beam into multiple beams so it looks really super cool, is less dangerous, because it is not one direct concentrated beam..... and really adds to things

ok, first off, Brian, you know i love ya dude, your like the brother i never wanted, but i have to say, watching the end of that video bored me to tears,lol. Lasers really dont impress me much. Its something that you really need to see in person to really get the full effect. Besides you really need a good heavy haze or fog for it to be cool, all the shapes and doodads dont stand up by themselves. and most halls wont let you use either. and 575.00 WOW!!!

Fog was used in this video right? Correct me if I'm wrong ,bu in the video it seems like a single beam of light with a quite a bit of effects.

Does it create any of the following effects:

5 beams moving in a wave like pattern or up and down, Moving water effect, vortex looking kind of thing?
